The Kin

The Kin is focused on friendship and sharing and involves exchanges, discussions and games, as well as many other fun and exciting monthly activities!

  1. Started by Ryrin,

We are just settling in to our new home! Planning is taking place to add some more fun & things to do here. If you have an activity that you would like to suggest, you are most welcome to post it here or send me a PM. I am Ryrin, the Eldest of the Kin, figuratively and literally.

Welcome to the Kin! The Kin has been called a little bit of everything by our fellow social groups, but the resounding tone of each name is centered around one word: Home! The Kin has grown to encompass a lot of really great folks. Whether at home on another forum or not, The Kin welcomes folks from all walks of SG-dom, regardless of their situation, their status, or their activity levels. With this Info post, I'd like to hand you all the links and information you need to know about the Kin as an SG, as a group of people, and as (hopefully) future friends.

Hello everyone! Wow we got quiet. Anyone still about? Do you have plans for the holidays? What have you been up to? We have a quiet holiday planned. The last few months have been dramatic (in both good and bad ways), so we are looking forward to just relaxing, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the down time. Short catch-up post: I have finished writing the new curriculum for all of my course, which is a huge relief. I worked on it all summer and just finished it at the end of November! In August we lost two cats (both young, both unexpectedly due to invisible sudden-onset health issues we had no reason to expect, and neither did our …

My husband just retired. I am already retired. Yes, I am truly “The Eldest.” 😉 If money were no object where and what would you suggest we do?

A little late but still here!

  9. Started by Ryrin,

My husband and a friend of ours went to the farmer’s market, came home and canned pickles and okra. We bought some of our own canning equipment! I really want to can smokey ketchup. Next year we will have our own garden. Any plans for Father’s Day?

  10. Happy Spring! It's been so quiet. I hope everyone is doing all right. How are folks? What have you been up to? What are you looking forward to most about Spring?

  11. Once upon a time- I think maybe before we swapped to forums- we had a thread about foods people were making. So I thought it might be fun to have a spot to talk tasty treats, and share ideas (and occasionally recipes should we be so inclined). Recently I've started down a new dessert research track (different from my usual cookies and cakes): Custards! Starting with this, my first ever crème brûlée! (Yes the recipe in the cookbook said to bake in a rectangular pan, it's a very old recipe). It turned out to be much simpler than I was anticipating, and delicious! Custard based desserts are some of my favorites. Also - Broilers work VERY fast! I made this when we had f…

I’m reading “The Cellist” by Daniel Silva, his 21st book in the Gabriel Allon series.

What are you looking forward to this Fall? My sister just flew home yesterday. We had a lot of fun. My son and his fiancé are flying in on the 8th.

  14. The most notable thing inside this cozy cottage is the variety of chairs. Plush chairs, stools, rocking chairs, swings suspended from the ceilings, camp chairs that look like they might fold up with a person inside them, benches, love seats, and firm cushions for the floor, wooden, metal, stone, cloth, you name it. A modest loom and spinners wheel are arranged in with the chairs to help conversation flow. The second most notable thing are the cabinets! The glass fronts showcase yarn and thread of every thickness and color, and bolts of cloth of good stout Two Rivers wool and fine Sharan silks and everything in between. Even some 3rd age materials th…

Ok. Now we need to add toppings! What do you like on your Sunday?

  17. Started by Ryrin,

Are you enjoying summer? We are buying a house. It’s supposed to close by Tuesday! Fingers crossed. It’s an older house with hardwood floors, a fireplace, and new flooring in the kitchen and bathrooms. The best thing about it is that it has a built in pool! Oh, there is a lemon tree and other fruit trees plus grape vines. I’m trying to move while I have lateral & medial tears in my meniscus. I have a good friend that is helping me.

For a 'this or that' game, you propose two items for people to choose between. The next person reply chooses their preference (for whatever their own reasons, and you may elaborate on why if you like, or not) and then proposes two more. ? And so it continues. I am starting this one with a fall theme just to help give folks ideas. So.... Halloween or Thanksgiving?
