Hey all, I've decided to put together an Asha'man cosplay (not a specific character) and wanted some opinions about the clothing options. I was planning to be a Taraboner, partly because I'm pretty tall with light skin and hair, which rules out most nationalities. I know men in Tarabon typically wear a face veil and a cylindrical cap. Do you think a Taraboner Asha'man would wear one or both of these as well? Also, Taraboners are known to wear loose fitting, colorful clothing. Do you think Asha'man would wear clothes like these under their black coats, or would it be more accurate to switch to darker clothes? Thanks in advanc…

So I have just started to reread WoT, thanks in part to my excitement about the upcoming tv show, and also from watching youtube channels like Daniel Greene. I spent three hours searching through boxes for them (we have a very small house, with no room for books, so they've been sitting in storage, poor things), and was pleased to see that they're still in good condition, minus a cover sleeve or two. It's been something like 15 years since I've read them, and I haven't gotten too far in yet (barely into the first chapter of EotW), but my first impression is.... Oh my goodness, do I love the prologue! It hooks you, draws you in so well, and I can still remember…

Reading TEotW again, Moiraine tells Nynaeve that the Aes Sedai don't worry too much about finding sparkers because they're dangerous to others, but dangerous to themselves, they may die. She says, Seems odd that men seem to chance into the full blown embracing and weaving without teachers. I could understand if you were told what you were and therefore you could experiment the way Rand did. But without that, shouldnt' the survivors just adapt a'la Nynaeve? Instead they get good too since a couple of the old false dragons are said to have stilled, killed, and captured 3-6 Aes Sedai while being taken down.

Ok so this is a subjective list. Open for wild debate and likely to involve a number of duels being challenged. Rules are no channelling allowed fighters are allowed to be selected at peak skills (e.g. Rand pre KoD). (Also due to them not dueling per say and the fact I've no idea where to fit them in I'm leaving the Aiel out... but if you want add them in to any conters) 1. Lan - got to be! 2. Demandred - close 2nd probably if he concentrated could have been 1st but you lose concentration against Lan and you die. 3. Mat rarely seen in a fair fight he could be no. 1 possibly but I'm putting him in at 3 as he can't be lower. 4. Rand pr…

I've been wondering this for a few years now. If The Eye of the World was adapted into a movie, what accent would the characters have? The Wheel of Time has been written by an American author, so I think the chances of the characters having a common (not southern, or city) American accent would seem likely. The T.V. series, Legend of the Seeker, which is adapted from the Sword of Truth series, by Terry Goodkind, has all of its characters speaking in American accents. Remember, the author of the book series is American too. Most of the LOTR's movie's characters spoke in English accents, but that might be because Tolkien was British. So, what do you thin…

  7. Do you think Moraine is the glue that holds the WoT series together? I only made it through books 5 or 6 on my first reading (I'm starting over on book 1 right now), but even only this far in, I cannot imagine the series holding together without her. She is obviously (in my opinion) the wisest and most mature of the Aes Sedai and her integrity provides a balance to many of the bickering, power hungry sisters as well as a path for Rand to tread. Thoughts?

The only place that makes sense to me is Yellowstone. while the creation of dragonmount is part of our future, it is also a part of our distant past. Since dragonmount doesn’t exist today, it must have blow up. yellowstone is also close to the Rocky Mountains, like the dragonmount is close to the dragonwall.

  9. So, I was rereading EotW (for what seems like the hundredth time), and it occurs to me that many of the characters that were introduced to us throughout the series undergo such great character development as to be unrecognizable from their roots. Am I the only one who couldn't stand Mat in the first couple of books, and then suddenly he becomes a favorite? Same thing for me with Egwene until MUCH later. Whereas, Rand and Perrin undergo a reverse metamorphosis for me (going from favorite to... not-so-much). Here's my incomplete list. Any other ideas? Anyone flat out disagree with me? LIKE -> DISLIKE Rand Perrin Gawyn Siuan …

  11. Greetings, I've known about WoT for a long time, have been introduced to it be when the D20 game was out, but due to a bad review from a trusted friend, I avoided actually reading the series. I have since put aside those prejudices and read the series in 21 months which is really fast for a slow reader such as myself and I must say I have been completely blown away. What an amazing ride! No one in my local community has read the series so I don't have anyone with whom to discuss what happened. Hence my coming here. I was so overwhelmed by the final book, I nearly wept in a few places. To end a series after such an emotional investment. To watch so many characters perish i…

There have been several things throughout the series which have always been credited to Rand being Ta'veren, but this doesn't make sense. A Ta'veren can only effect odds. They make something that is possible, far more likely to happen. However, they can't make something that is physically impossible happen. So, it doesn't make sense for Rand's being a Ta'veren be responsible for the dead, barren apple tree in the prologue of TGS come back to life, with a full harvest of apples. And of course, he literally altered reality when he fully recreated the Dark One's prison. Does this mean that Rand is the literal avatar of the Creator?

I know he's everyone's least favorite character. I'm not immune to this. However, rather than focusing on the like/dislike of the character, I starting thinking about Gawyn's motivations, and the "why" he is what he is. Psychoanalyzing him was more interesting than I expected it to be. It seems to me that Gawyn grew up without a sense of self. He was told from birth that his life wasn't as important as the life of his sister. Even his mother, in her secret thoughts, worries way more about the safety of her daughter than her son. I think that he took this lesson to heart. I think his feelings towards Egwene was a subconscious rebellion against the path t…

  14. Just recently couple of days ago I went to the Barnes and Noble store when I was out of town and bought the last 14th book for paperback and holy cow its huge for a paperback. Especially books 12 and 13 besides book 14. Its been a long time since I read the first 6 books back in the late 1990s. Just wondering how good the other last half of the series is?

Ok so there is a lot of talk on the other thread about the Worst Wot romances, but what about the best. While there is less good than bad I want to see what others think. For me it's going to have to be only two. 1. Rand/Min: One of the only fully fleshed out romances with actual character behind them. 2. Mat/Tuon: An opposites attract scenario but with plenty of charm during earlier books.

People have asked me why I like Cadsuane, especially in light of my thread on the inherent and invasive stupidity of the Aes Sedai, which many regard Cadsuane to be the ultimate example of. So in this thread I am going to attempt to explain what it is about Cadsuane that I like, and why I regard her as one of the greatest characters in the series. Now, going in, I know the vast majority of you hold a different view, and all I ask is this--read me through, and be gentle when you tear me to pieces. :D The Subtleties of Cadsuane Ok, so most people look at Cadsuane as a bully, so that’s where I am going to start—her general behaviour. After that I will move on …

  18. Always to me Perrin’s actions during the middle books were just...boring. I stopped really caring about his problems after the first book about his rescuing of Faile. He was singly focused, and completely tunnel visioned on his quest (and when the quest is mostly uninspiring that’s not great story material). Now it didn't quite dawn on me until I was re-reading the final three books that Perrins single focus mind set is one of his key traits. It’s one of his key struggles in ToM, finding the balance in himself. Now Perrin does come to terms with himself and in my eyes completely redeems himself over the last few books. So that got me thinking, was Perrin’s boring stretche…

Is Mary Poppins Black Ajah? Did she draw children into the dream world without their consent? By the end of the movie Mary murders a man. And Mary flies like the woman in Egwene’s first visit to Tarabon in the dream world. Also many of the other mechanics in Mary Poppins’ presence can only occur in the dream world.

  20. So it would seem that a Tower in Exile would need some basic things. Distance from The White Tower. Initial Subterfuge. Access to Resources and Information. Safe from Local Government. Salidar, 1 out of 4 ain’t bad. Saldean Town, on river, dock. 4 for 4. I guess technically, Amador would have been worse, but not by much.

  21. This is something that has been rolling around in my brain for a bit. It's been well-documented in the series that gentling/stilling/severing essentially leaves the victim with a deep depression because they can never experience the One Power again, an uber-withdrawl, if you will. I always wondered if that would be the case if a man was gentled before they were even aware what they were doing, and never realized that they were channeling at all. Obviously the chances of that happening would be slim, as it would require a very observant Aes Sedai who was in the right place at the right moment, but do you think such a person would be able to live a …

  22. Just on a whim (too much time on my hands), I recently started re-reading the series. I'm well into the EOTW and hit the scene where Mat first sees the Tower Of Ghengi. As I read the scene, I flash forwarded to Mat reading Moiraine's letter to Thom regarding her rescue in Towers Of Midnight. As I recall, the letter specifically tells Thom that only a team consisting of himself, Mat and one other can succeed. No problem with any of that since Mat is the one to figure out how to use the lines from the Fox and Snakes game to gain entry to the tower and out fox the Aelfin (I think those are the people holding her). What did bring me up short though was the part about Mat …

  23. Personally I would say no for a few reasons. Damame can’t link and they don’t have an Adam that works on men. Whereas you have a much larger and more proficient Aes Sedai including male channelers. Given that the series laid so much stress on “men and women working together are stronger” this seems to be a glaring weakness of the Seanchan. In Memory of Light, a group of male and female channellers destroy a whole army of Trollocs. So the Seanchan could learn new abilities but they would be totally outclassed and the numbers and skill advantage they had would wane after Memory of Light. Even during the books, male channellers demolished the Suldam with embarras…

  24. Hello everyone, While fishing this afternoon, I began thinking about the WOT (Mainly to take my mind off how bad a fisherman I am) and two things occurred to me. One was something that I've never seen discussed and the other is something I think is a plot hole. First, does anyone know what the significance of the "al" prefix in in the Two Rivers? I mean some families have it and some don't, but it doesn't seem to denote social standing. I mean Rand, Nyneave, Egwene and their families all sport the "al", but they don't seem to have a higher social standing than do the Cauthons, the Aybaras, the Luhans , Cenn Bui or any of the others. So, what does it mean? …

Hi, this is my first topic, and I'm not a writer, so bear with me :) MowbrayDeadOrAlive may have explained certain things about Perrin better in his post "Perrin Aybara: The character", but I intend to try to explain a little about Perrin through talking about introversion. I'm not here to start another argument about Perrin, just presenting some points about why I like his character(and why I see a lot of Perrin supporters like him because they remind them of themselves), and why I think he's hard to relate to for most readers. A Study on Perrin and Introverts Introvert doesn't mean shy or socially awkward, it means a person is introspective, likes to be a…

This definitely comes from a level of hindsight more than anything else, but Rand flubbed his instructions to the Aiel before entering Cairhein. Rand should have told the Aiel that despite the Cairhein’s failure to save the tree, they were still humans. And they weren’t darkfriends. As such, prior to the last battle, every single human should be considered as if they are the same Clan. The larger Clan of non-darkfriends ultimately to fight side by side to defeat DO and therefore even insults can be ignored. The only killing must be in self defense or the defense of another non-df.

Not sure if this would be the right place to post this. I just purchased the 8th and 9th books today from a Barnes and Noble store (with other books). I had not yet started on them. I imagine it might take me at most 2 weeks to finish them (at most 1 week for each). I would do periodic updates in this thread if anyone asks for them in this thread. If you would like my opinion on various scenes, you may ask about those also.

I could be completely wrong about this, I haven't read WoT since AMoL. However, I've been listening to the audiobook on Libby while at work, and I believe Mat is Jak o' the Shadows. It's probably been discussed before, and I have to head back to work so I don't have much time to list my reasons, but I remember thinking that back when I was reading it, and it just came to mind again.
