I was just wondering if there's some kind of overview of the WOT books somewhere? I read a great many books and have been reading the WOT novels off an on, about two a year. I completed The Shadow Rises at the end of last summer and only this week picked up The Fires of Heaven. I am realizing that I need to simply forsake all other books and just complete the WOT series in one run because I find myself considerably lost every time I begin a new book. I find the number of characters somewhat overwhelming, especially when you consider that almost all of them are vitally important to the story line. Between the Aiel, the foresaken, the Aes Sedai, The Children of the Lig…

Yo, just doing another re-read, and came across something interesting. When Rahvin, Sammael, Graendal and Lanfear have their first meeting, we are in Rahvin's POV. He mentions looking through Graendal's gateway and seeing an sad looking old man who looked out of place amongst the rest of shenanigans going on in her palace. Who is this guy? There are many people it could be, she's in Arad Doman, right? So i have an idea it may be Alsalam, i mean, Ituralde has no idea where he is, but do we have any information how old, or what Alsalam looks like? I don't think so... any ideas who this geezer is?

I cna't believe it took me this long to figure this one out. Gareth Bryne is Robert E. Lee. Bluff, Stocky, Graying. Absolute Gentleman. Both riding a favorite horse named Traveler. Which is kind of funny when you consider the name, Gareth, first appeared as King Arthur's favorite dog (from childhood) in "A Once and Future King."

So seriously, ever paused to concider the realities of the channelers in the world. RJ tells us that at the time of the books roughly 1% of the population have the ability to channel. Of that 62.5% of women being strong enough to gain the shawl, and 65.4% of men. Getting an actual grip on the population of Randland is a bit harder. Purely from soldiers mention we know that there are 1,813,000. Doubled for their female counterpart that sets the lower limit at at least 3,626,000. This unfortunately is the only solid numbers we have, but based on descriptions i would say the population of the Westlands is around 20 million. It's less than what it should be for a society…

Hey gang, We've probably been there done that with the whole casting thing, but here are some ideas for Thom Merrilin that stuck in my mind while reading the books. Who do you all think would make the best Thom Merrilin if they ever made a WoT series, in whatever form it may be? Thom #1 Hal Hollbrook Why he should be Thom: He has the look, build, and a gleeman's smile. He still has the acting chops, (see Into the Wild) and he has an extensive Broadway background, he can speak HIGH CHANT. Why he shouldn't be Thom: Stunts may need to be CGI or a good stunt double, he's 83 years old. Thom #2 Billy Connolly Why he should be Thom: He …

I didn't want to hijack the "Mat and the ToG" thread but something was raised that I've been wondering about. It is only stated that the blade "appears to be made of iron" so it's composition is suspect and it's intended purpose is useless against the 'Finns. I think that dagger winds up with Perrin. As thing sits, he is pretty much defenseless against any Forsaken that decides to collect a ta'veren trophy. In CoT, if that pack of 50 darkhounds had been sent for him, his entire party, would have been wiped out. Rand is obviously a powerful channeler in his own right. He is also surrounded by a boatload of channelers, many of whom are actually loyal …

This thread isnt about how inconceivable it is that everyone in Randland and Seanchan speak the language...although if we want to discuss it, it would be interesting to hear what people think on this. This thread is actually wondering how the hell the Forsaken can speak the common tongue, or new speak or whatever the language is that everyone uses (maybe its English) They became trapped in the bore when everyone still spoke the old tongue (which probably wasn't called the 'old tongue' at the time, maybe 'new tongue' or just 'tongue') and were released when no one could speak the old tongue anymore except for scholars, some aes sedai and some nobles. So, how…

I am on my 12th or so reread of the series. I am almost finished with TDR and I had my "doh" moment. All these years I have been trying to figure out who the Eagle was to go along with Faile on Perrin's shoulder. I guess years ago I just got fixated that it would be another woman. I thought Berrin for awhile or Tenobia to cement his broken crown prophecy. Then it occurs to me that the eagle is Manatheran. I kept wondering why RJ always kept mentioning the dang flag, other than his tendency to repeat descriptions. Someone please tell me this is correct. Also why do so many people on these boards just loathe Faile. Some of her story lines have been far fro…

How likely is it that the Tower captures Tuon to stop the Seachan and Matt leads the battle that topples the tower? Big bombs dropping from the Rakens claws would be awesome.

... a fresh look at Mazrim Taim. False Dragon ( although as a man who can channel strongly he probably believes he's the real deal ). Captured and held by AS. Approached by BA. Broken free by loyal followers. Just starting to feel that he's back-in-the-saddle-again, and BLAM, the sky lights up, and somebody else is fighting Ba'alzamon. Hopes dashed, followers evaporating, he does what he can to evade those pursuing him. Foremost among those being Davram Bashere. He hears rumors of the other Dragon, the one he saw in the sky, offering an amnesty to any man who can channel. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, he sets off for Caemlyn and that am…

What greatness is in store for Logaine according to the visions of Min? Will he be a king in the Fourth Age? Is he going to become a great hero? Is Taim perhaps a red herring planted by Robert Jordan to keep our suspicions off of Logaine being a true baddie? -Myndrnner

The further through the books I get, the more I notice strong purposes associated with pretty much every character, including Juilin who had his purpose to begin with, but frankly could have been killed off around book 6 except that now he's rescued what we know to be Amathera from the Seanchan. Then I thought about Loial, and I thought "what purpose does he have?". He doesnt seem to be doing anything... he had his grandest hours locking the waygates, he was heroic when we saw him running through the woods towards Emonds Field, carrying Gaul but now, what is he doing? I considered that he was going to pull the Ogier into the war, but then I thought that I perha…

I was just wondering how illogical the white tower decisions have been regarding male channelers over the course of 3000 years. The thing that bugs me the most, is the way in which the white tower has dealt with the false dragons over the course of 3000 years. Consider all the false dragons, from the time of Guaire Amalsalan (sp?), Yurian stonebow etc to the modern false dragons, Logain and Mazrim Taim. It seems that every time a false dragon comes up, the tower's default strategy is to send a circle of 13 (minimum) to deal with him. Now here's the part that bugs me, every time a circle goes, usually a couple aes sedai are killed/stilled in the process of subduing the…

Forgive my spelling, I listen to the audiobooks. There is a woman, Briana (or some such), that is traveling with Morgase's party when Morgase flees Gabrial. It is mentioned that she was a former high lady or maybe just a servant of a former high lady. Do we know who she is/was? It has been bugging me. Have we seen her before or do we really first see her when she goes off with Morgase?

This started on another thread and I thought I would like to discuss it further, but didnt want to hijack the other thread. Lews Therin has become more active, and strives to reach the source for himself. Indeed we know that this is possible - Lews Therin can wield Saidin, through Rand. One thing we know about Rand is that he currently finds himself physically incapable of killing a woman. There is one woman who has been a 'problem' for Rand since the beginning - in fact he has missed several opportunities of killing her, and this failure on his part lead to the loss of one of the main women in the series. Lanfear. What else do we know about L…

Has anyone else noticed that we have several monarchs or leaders, who are disguised, lost or otherwise (apart from to us the readers) unaccounted for? There is Amathera, the panarch of Tarabon, whom we know to be the timid and scared 'Thera' - a da'covale whom Juilin fell in love with and took with him when they fled Ebou Dar. Mat and his party know her real personality but she is not where she belongs. Morgase - the obvious one. Tuon - to an extent Tuon is 'unaccounted for'. We know where she is and certainly Mat and his party know but at my point in the books (early in book 10) she's lost as far as the Seanchan and the rest of the world are concerned. …

I have just completed another read through of the series, and as after every read, new questions have risen that I never considered before. In KOD, Semi mentions that Rand is insane and the illness is inevitable. Furthermore, she mentions that its even WORSE if the voice is real- an idea that makes NO sense to me. Regardless, we know that Rand is dealing with some serious issues here-issues that probably need to be resolved before he can confidently begin his assualt on the DO. On the other hand, we know that Cadsuane has a self appointed mission to teach the Dragon laughter and tears before TG. In fact, she believes that if Rand goes to TG the way he is right n…

Anyone have any thought on what Egwene will do with the five BA hunters in the Tower. I'm sure she will grant pardons for everyone who supported the usuroer Elaida, but those five committed crimes akin to treason by forcing the ten ferrets the rebels sent to the Tower so swear the fourth oath. They made them swear on the oath rod, which is defferent from what Egwene herself did by demanding fealty for covering for certain sisters crimes. Maybe she won't see it that way and will give them a "no harm no foul" when those ten sisters are released. In any case, I think a great many of the Tower sisters are in for a very big surprose when Egwene is once again we…

First off no this is not an April Fool's joke. I was reading tFoH last night and it just occured to me how similiar to alot of religious prophets Masema is, if you take out all the beheadings and stuff. Like Buddha he only eats simple food and gives the rest away to the poor and he meditates. Like Jesus and Muhammad he preaches about how women should dress decently, is a big fan of marriage and he preaches that everyone is equal in the eyes of the Lord Dragon. In the Jewish aspect of things he says that speaking the name of the Lord Dragon is blasphemy, just like how Jewish people do not speak the name of God. He's a crazy mix of all these famous religious p…

Anyone who has read Bored with the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon, published in 1969, should wonder why no one has ever written a parody of the Wheel of Time. I am quite sure there are some good comedic writers among us who could try. ::) ;D Struggling with the names of some of the characters in Wot, I began to create my own variations of the characters when discussing the books with friends. Quite often, Moiraine became Migraine and Rand al'Thor became Rand om'Bore. I got thinking, what a gold mine a Waste of Time book parody would be if done respectfully. The characters could be: Rand....................Rand om'Bore Mat.....................Mac Coughdro…

I love Setalle Anan. I'm reading CoT, Mat has gone into the wagon to see Tuon as Luca's circus is packing up, they're waiting for Thom then they're off. He's just had to flatten himself to avoid a flying cup, and Tuon has snatched up the chamber pot. Selucia takes it off her, and this to start with made me laugh, Tuon is so powerful but Selucia takes it off her like you would skillfully take a fragile ornament out of the hand of a toddler; quite obviously its an action Selucia has had to take on many an occasion. Setalle, who up until this point has been quietly sat doing her needlework, not really paying much attention, calmly reaches up above her …

I do not know if this has been resolved by the end of book 11 because i havent got there yet. I do know, however, that Semirhage is captured. I was wondering, given her track record and 'hobbies', what would be the result of collaring her with an a'dam? Do you think she could be broken by something similar to her own treatment of prisoners? OR, if they captured, say, Graendal too, could they collar and force Semirhage to torture Graendal into talking? Or do you think Graendal would simply let herself be killed? She's quite ambitious... i'm not sure she would.

I have looked for a relevant post, but they all kinda get offtopic...lol Any thoughts on Mesaana being Theodrin? I know it would be kind of hard to bounce back and forth, well, maybe not, that would actually explain why M doesn't know a whole lot of what goes on in the Tower, she plays kind of dumb with Alviarin. The best argument for this is the gesture they both make while thinking...tapping their lips. Maybe I'm reaching, but it's the best clue I can find so far. Maybe it is explained more in KoD, I haven't read it but twice. That is what I love love love about these books. I could read them a hundred times and still find new things!!
