I like Balin, he's just really cool guy, I also for some reason liked Bombur. And my favorite quote Thorin to Bilbo just before Thorin dies: Some courage and some wisdom blended in measure, if more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry I must leave it now...farewell.

So fantasy is all about the exploration of ideas, character, compelling storylines and memorable ideas? Certainly, but we must remember the value of a really good, kick-arse smackdown between armies in the thousands, well orchestrated by an author temporarily possessed by the spirit of Napoleon. Some of my favourites: 1) The Battle of the Blackwater - A Clash of Kings by George RR Martin An interesting one, as it's a combined-arms assault by both land and sea on a city with only a small number of defenders. Of course, when the defenders are led by the ruthlessly cunning Tyrion Lannister, things are not as hopeless as they first seem. Martin orchestrates the battle by…

Well we had another small DM meet it was me Staffy, Leane and Dwynwyn again. I took them to Disneyland. My managers bought us dinner and we had an awesome time. Here's some pics of the day that Staffy didn't take. :D http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c63/ElyssaLliet/P1000737.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c63/ElyssaLliet/P1000744.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c63/ElyssaLliet/P1000745.jpg there was one more of all of us but it came out really blurry. Season Premire in 3 hours! I'M TOTALLY PSYCHED!!!! Ok, so here's my guess, Grey won't chose either Chris or Patrick, and instead just run away, they'll both "fight" for her attention, and eventually Patrick will win, because Chris is guest star and has to leave eventually. Kinda pisses me off, because by the end of the second season I thought Shepard was a total jerk. And as for Izzie, I REALLY want her to stay! Mostly because Alex is hands down my favorite character on the show (George is a close second) and I want him to finally, ACTUALLY, get her. Plus Izzie can be cool at times, like when she's not falling for patients. Anyway TOTALLY PSYCHED!!!!

Hey, what changes has DM gone through over the past few years that are not completely cosmetic? Seriously, I haven't been by in a few years and the layout is different, but alot seems the same. I am just curious if anyone can give a breakdown of the changes... this is the fourth incarnation I can remember of DM...

I occasionally do reviews for other forums and I thought I'd do one for Dragonmount just to see what reaction it gets. The book I chose is China Mieville's Perdido Street Station, originally published in 2000 and the first of three books (so far) set in his fantasy world of Bas-Lag (preceding The Scar and Iron Council). This book has won numerous awards and laurels from critics, and by and large I found it stood up to the hype. The review:

I think this was back in 2000 or 2001. The Warder's Org had a huge RP going on. Matalina was captured by a Forsaken, and we mounted a large offensive to rescue her. Ben-T Gaidin led the attack force and we beat a lot of shadowspawn just to get to Mat. As wew rescue her, our party got assaulted by a Gholam. Josef al'March and I stayed behind to cover the retreat. We managed to get away, but I nearly lost an eye and Josef was mortally wounded. If not for the WT healing and the many Accepteds tending to Josef, he defeated death as well. another memory of mine is meeting a bunch of DMers at various times throughout DM history.

Should she kill off Harry, or keep him around? I say keep him, if only that I wouldn't want to read of someone coming of age and then being snuffed out.

  19. Since it's come up repeatedly with people comparing WOT to various other things, I thought I'd make a whole separate thread for it. Anyway, the bit I just noticed was an episode from the most recent series of Doctor Who, 'The Satan Pit.' The story is about Satan himself, (or rather the Devil creature that really existed, and all the myths of Satan-type figures in religions and mythology come from him), who was imprisoned by an ancient civilisation before the universe began. There are a group of humans on an asteroid, drilling down to a power source buried 10 miles underground, unaware that they are drilling into the ancient prison. As the drill gets closer, things sta…

My favourites: 1. The Balrog Of Morgoth - LOTR Oh so wonderful! It has the horns, the sword, the whip, the wings, and the shadow and flame effect looks awesome. I also like the fact that it's barely described in the book, just mentions shadow and flame. Easily my favourite bit of the whole film trilogy, I loved what they did with it. And to top it all - it kills off the most-loved fantasy character ever. 2. The Male Dragon - Reign Of Fire I have a thing about dragons, and this was the best one I've ever seen. There is one shot of a ruined London skyline complete with several large dragons nesting in the rooftops. Then the male dragon flies over and blots out the…

Yesterday marked the first day of the Fast of Ramadan for observant muslims in the United States. From sun up to sun down, they will not eat or drink. Special prayers will be said each night for the next 28 days. The holiday ends with the Feast of Eid al-Fitr, which will last for three days. I'm expecting this to occurr around Oct. 24th. The fasting is meant to remind muslims of the suffering experienced by the less fortunate. Acts of charity are expected during this month as well. For anyone who doesn't know, I teach at the only public school in the US that requires all students to take Arabic as a second language. About two thirds of our student body is muslim.…

JRR Tolkien's third son Christopher has published a lot of his father's work about Middle-earth over the last 33 years since JRR's death, most notably The Silmarillion (the grand mythology that stands beyond The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and probably one of speculative fiction's greatest achievements to date) and Unfinished Tales, a series of short stories and essays by Tolkien which shed light on further aspects of Middle-earth not covered in the other books, including a prequel to The Hobbit where we find out how Gandalf and Thorin met. Now Christopher Tolkien has edited a lengthy chunk of his father's unfinished writing, combining it with other versions from…

Okay, so I see there's a lot of talk about a bunch of different SciFi/Fantasy series. I'd gleefully join them, but I can't because I haven't read a lot of them. But I'm looking for a new series (hooray). I no longer have the unlimited amount of time I used to as a kid, so I'm trying to narrow down my choice of a new series to the one that's most heavily favored, down to those mentioned by only one or two people. -sigh- Whatever, I just need something new to read. Here's what I've already got under my belt: Lord of the Rings/Hobbit (duh) Wheel of Time (again, duh) The Shannara Series Dragonlance (don't hate, you know you love it!) Dune The Hitchhiker's Guide t…
