Okay, this little piece of simple physics hit me like a brick wall the other day. Consider the fact that RJ is very good with obeying physical laws and general rules of common sense in his universe. In his web blogs, RJ has also specifically stated that, opening gateways across stellar distances is possible (if far beyond the knowledge of our 3rd age heroes). So my question for everyone to discuss is this: What would happen if you open a gateway into space? As far as we've been told about gateways, they're literally holes in the air which link two spaces together. The only barrier we've heard of yet on gateways is whatever prevents shadowspawn and/or artifi…

I am trying to find a book I read about 5 years ago, but I remember neither the name nor the author. The book was about twelve swords made by the gods for a game, and each sword had a purpose that it more or less used it's weilder for. The first sword I remember being called 'Townsaver'. Anyone know the book?

We all obviously love all things fantasy/science fiction, but what else are you reading? I need some inspiration. I love louis de berniere and isabelle allende. Adored The Time Traveller's Wife have just finished The Swallows of Kabul. short yet brutal and poignant story set in Taliban times. trying to work my way through some of the classics of hemmingway etc. What other genres, authors, books have you adored in recent months/years?

I'm not really so much a wide reader of the fantasy genre, although RJ's books are my favorite. I have read the HP books. I've read Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and most of the Silmarillion even. Other series I've tried to read, but none of it caught my fancy... My question here is: Are we the most in-depth/obsessed community of novel fantasy fans? I don't know. I don't go to any other sites or anything. I know the Harry Potter fans can get pretty obsessed, but I find most of that obsession to be either entirely too weird or pretty corny and childish with the fanfiction and stuff like that. The other part is, how deep we get into the books. There is…

People have told me that Fantasy is awesome, and in the same sentence, that Sci-Fi stinks. I cannot come to comprehend the blatant separation of these two genres because they are mirror images of each other. Both can be fictitious narratives solely aimed at inspiring intrigue and adventure or simply modems for spreading some deeper theme or meaning. The big difference that Sci-Fi emphasizes is the creation of a rational framework for anything it describes. Unlike Fantasy (where things can be described away as “magicâ€), this form of literature is focused on the “how†and “why†of an occurrence, on the process and means by which something exists. Sci-Fi attemp…

What is the news on the Get Well project? When will it be finished? how many peopple contributed something? Is there anything you need help with? (Personally i couldn't program a calculator if my life depended on it) I'd be willing to make that flash intro if I could get some pointers as to what sort of thing we are looking for.

David Wong, of Pointlesswasteoftime.com fame, is currently fundraising on behalf of St. Jude's Childrens Hospital. They're building a new wing to their facility in Memphis and are selling bricks that you can write stuff on. A brick that says "In honor of..." costs $750. We're trying to buy as many bricks as possible and inscribe them with silly things like "Brick Tamland". We're shooting for things that would make the kids laugh if they saw it. We've currently got one and a half bricks after three days and they'll be selling bricks for about a month longer. We're not going to write anything offensive or immoral on the bricks and if they refuse to incribe them, they'll sti…

I have to share this ]link with everyone here! I downloaded this video last night, and after watching it, is is the most beutifally awesome thing I have ever seen in a game. As well as 'portal' technology in a game. It makes the orginal Half Life 2's gravity gun, Fail in comparison!! I almost shed a tear because it was so buetifully awesome. Not to mention anyone who's ever pondered what a gateway could do.. Well umm this game will show it! I am not going to be the first person at the store 12:00am when it is first released :P *don't worry, I won't be. Faster to buy it and DL on line.* :D

Maybe this thread is more for the debates board, since the background is a serious as you can get - the current Israel-Hezbollah-Lebanon war. But I was searching for some Lebanese POVs on the issue and came accross the Lebanese Bloggers Forum at www.Lebanonheartblogs.blogspot.com If any of you are into reading blogs, or interested in the current conflict, I suggest you check these out - the voices are from all sides of the issue, all parts of the spectrum, and they are mostly damn well written. After reading them, I couldn't help but spread the word a bit.

With the squads now official, and the tournament just around the corner, I declare the old thread...old. 9 June, 18.00 CET, the first game Germany vs Costa Rica starts, then it's a long fiesta until the final whistle blows 9 July sometime around 22.00 CET. I still keep Brazil as favourites, the attacking formation is out of this world. Biggest threat is Italy, Lippi seems to have succeeded in building a team without weaknesess, but with some exceptional qualities. Dark horses: Argentina, also a very strong team, but not quite up to Italy. Germany, despite fielding the possibly worst German team in WC history, they have a tendency of rising to the chal…

Anything about Coyotes? Theyve come to my area, and have already killed 3 dogs. Ive been adivsed to bring in all my cats and dogs (which is like 14-15 total of all) My parents are refusing to, which means I have to take the fight to them. Or become all night watch person of the pets (the latter is less appealing cause i enjoy sleep), I got bite proof stuff, and the whole lot of needed things. Just never gone after em before. So do they carry rabies commonly? Are they pack hunters? Can they climb trees. Etc. I know its ill advised, and not the best thing to do, but its all i can do (or anyone around here for that matter) Anyone's knowledge shared would be great.

So my hubby is still keeping in touch with DM and BW friends he made years ago, and I'm feeling much like a loser. After all, I met Jay at DragonCon, you know. So...I decided to return, in what capacity, I am not sure. I am returning after an absence of about 3 years, so there are lots of people that I miss who are probably gone as well. However, I have seen some familiar names in the hour that I've been browsing the site...I can't believe that Karana STILL uses the blue&white dancing girl icon!!

I want to call upon all Dragonmounters to help the citizens of South Africa. South Africa has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world. This fact is hidden quite well from the international community by means of what can only be called propaganda by the ruling political parties. Here is just a few statistics on the occurrence of violent crimes in South Africa: - 20 000 people are murdered in South Africa each year. That’s more than 54 murders a day, or one murder every half an hour. - Poverty is not to be blamed for all murders in South Africa. A large percentage of murdered victims were not even robbed either before or after such killings. …

Hi everyone. I was picking my sister up at the air port here in Charleston last Friday afternoon, while I was waiting I happened to turn my head and saw Mr. Jordan and his lovely wife headed to the security check point. I got a chance to shake his hand and meet his wife and wish him good luck on his check-up. He and his wife really are very wonderful people. later

Hey y'all My name is Phoenix (p.k.a. Guardian Ian). I'm almost 19 (which would make me 18 lol) and I'm about to go to college as a pre-med student. And even though I KNOW I dont' really need to worry about it yet, I just wanted to know, what are some of the best med schools out there? I always heard Stanford was really good, and Johns Hopkins, and Baylor College of Medicine, but what do you ACTUAL doctor's think? Is your med school really important? Other questions: someone please explain to me what an internship is, as well as a residency! Are they the same, or different??? Also, how do you get a job? Do you just apply? Are you referred? Assigned? As…

I never heard of this author before, but I recently (recently to me means in the last year or so) heard someone on NPR talking about her. It seemed apparent from the interview that she had died, as they were praising her in the past tense. Does anyone know her work? I am intrigued by her being the first black female sci-fi writer. And then on top of that, someone commented about her on a blog I read and I thought wow, this is too many coincidences. But when I looked her up on Amazon her body of work was huge. Anyone know her? Have any recommendations? Also, there was a comment about a book about a family of (multigenerational?) witches or something in San F…

Hey guys and gals, I'm a new user but i've thought about this before. Alright, every character that can manipulate the elements and whatnot has the power to be invulnerable. I'm not talking just about al'thor, but magneto and so many other heroes and villains. It just seems that these guys have ultimate powers, and "...even you can be taken out by an arrow." I mean honestly, can't rand weave an air shield or summat to block any physical damage from coming to him? like a constant shield of flying air knives; anything like an arrow would be shredded and buffeted away. it doesn't seem that intensive to tie something like that off after cleansing the source and wha…
