Cari had promised to make this trip into the White Tower Walls again. The children eagerly wanted to see the White Tower up close and personal, and they wanted to see the Warders training. For some reason both Taylor and Aiden kept on about out she, Cari, could beat them all. Cari wondered where that idea had come from but the noise from the yards soon caught her attention.

Cari's attire was far from what it had been years ago when she was here last. She wore a dark grey dress with off the shoulder sleeves. Her cloak covered what could be seen of the scar she'd received on these very grounds. She hated covering her treasured tattoos up but the scar was far to close to it's origin to be safe for her and her children. It was very good that Reikan was safely stored away as Sam on the Ranch. He was the one person who might be able to recognize Cari at a glace, even with the makeup and dress and the auburn dyed hair. Cari had fretted the day he'd shown up and found her out, but thankfully he'd been in hiding too.

The wood to wood sounds rang through out the yards and Cari closed her eyes at the sound of memories of people she'd once known, and some she'd even taken for as friends, but most of those were long gone, and those she had considered friends already knew of her existance as Cari Namere. Matalina to these people was dead. Dead a good six years at that!

The boys ran up to the fence and peered through the rails at a pair sparring. Cari didn't recognize their faces, but alot changes in nine years, alot! Cari lifted Kate up on to the railing to watch and stood behind her so she wouldn't fall. Kate clung to Cari's arms but she too was enthralled by the fighting they were watching. She wasn't as much of a nut about it as the boys, but she did enjoy her own training with the quarterstaff.

OOC: Anyone is welcome to join, there is no point for this thread other than to let others rp in this particular sequence of rps. The only rule: No one can know that Cari = Matalina unless you've already been given prior permission. But all are welcome to come and play and even perhaps spar. The children would love that lol.

Cari

Terren was training lightly in the Yards, re-accustoming his body to the conditioning it had been through before his abduction. He was bare chested and sweating as he went from form to form with his two swords, gliding along lightly, shifting his feet, imagining in his mind three opponents facing him. He closed his eyes, trying to keep a mental image of his surroundings.

He felt something bump into the back of his legs, and he nearly stumbled but righted himself. Frowning, he opened his eyes, turning swiftly. When he saw it was a young boy, he quickly lifted his swords high to avoid accidental injury.

"Careful, son," he said gently, "It's a dangerous place to be playing here."

The boy frowned up at him. "My ma could kick your ass." Terren frowned.

"mind your language." he chided gently. He turned to watch a woman approaching, quaterstaff in hand, and smiled. Jared had fought with a quaterstaff...but that had been a long time ago, and Jared was dead now.

"Could she indeed..." he said softly, appraising this woman as she approached. She looked in reasonable condition, but Terren had a significant weight and height advantage.

"Your son?" he asked, sheathing one sword and guiding him across to her gently with his hand.

OOC: i dont mind an ass kicking ;)

OOC: Cari doesn't have any weapons on her except two hidden daggers. She didn't bring visible proof she could fight other than the children lol <smiles> so I'll just leave that part out and continue one... hehe, thanks for jumping in

IC:

They boys took off and Cari brought Kate. Kate giggled, "Boys will be boys, Mommy." Cari smiled at the innocent comment but the boys would find themself hurt if they weren't careful. Not everyone was using pratice weapons. And sure enough Aiden had run into a man weilding two swords. He asked if the child was hers. Cari smiled polietly. "Yes, he's a bit anxious to see all that the White Tower holds for warriors. They've heard so many tales from the books my employer reads at night to them all."

Cari looked at Aiden. "Apologize for running into him." Aiden frowned having been criticized in front of Taylor, but he did as he was told.

"I'm sorry sir, I didn't mean to be so haste." Aiden giggled, "But my ma could still kick your bunny."

Cari raised an eyebrow at the boy. "What makes you say that?"

Aiden smile widened. "I've only seen Daddy beat you with a sword. Everyone else you've bested." He had her there, Sam was much better than her, he'd been the Grandmaster she had sparred last to begin her own Grandmaster status. "But that's not alot of people to compare me to. Demus is only learning. You Father is just one man."

Aiden looked up at Cari. "But Ma, I know you are better than he is, why don't you fight him?"

Cari looked at the man. "My appologize for my eager son..." Cari was about to continue when Taylor chimmed in. "Yeah, Miss Cari why don't you fight him?" Then Kate joined in. "Mommy, it could be a new lesson for us." The little girl smiled at her, "A lesson of not judging on first appearances."

Cari looked at the children then back at the man, "If you would like to test the children's theory..."

Cari

Terren smiled at her response, then sheathed his second sword and picked up a pair of practice lathes, and settled his swords on the ground.

"I'm always willing to assist in educating young children." He said. "But for the record, I have not made any judgements based on your appearance." He had learned long ago that women could be as deadly as men.

Assuming tha Flame and Void, he stood in a ready stance and waite for the woman- Cari?- to pick up a weapon.

OOC: WS 11, uses a very athletic fighting style based on his dual weapon weilding and agility/gymnastics ability. I'll let you begin, I doubt it will take you long unless you go easy ;)

Cari took the practice sword she was offered but it wasn't the right weight. She missed her own but one of the others would have to do. Cari carefully laid the provided lathe on the rank and tested several before finding one she was happy with. Cari weilded the weapon in wide arc getting the feel of a foreign lathe.

Cari handed the lathe to Aiden to hold as she removed her hidden daggers. It would be a shame to cut a man she didn't even know while teaching the lesson of appearances. "I'm sure Kate didn't mean you'd assumed anything. She meant that the boys would learn that I'm not the best there is, and you could very well best me." Cari wondered how many people here actually were better than she was. She was at the top of the class when she left, but there were always people who trained faster and harder than Cari ever had time for.

Cari took up stance and assumed the void. She pushed the shadow back into the depths of her mind. Stay at bay this is peaceful and friendly.

Cari paired The Creeper Embraces the Oak and The Cat Dances on the Wall to begin testing the man's defenses. She was never one to open up for an assult. That would probably be her downfall in the end, but learning had been ingrained in her since her days as a Trainee and even before then while she watched from the near by tree.

OOC: WS 17 .... uses mostly path of knowledge but plays dirtier now .... her strengths are quickness and agility and endurance.

Terren watched as she picked her lathe, all traces of amusement now definately one from his mind. He could tell instantly that she kew what she was doing, very much so. She opened cautiously with Creeper Embraces the Oak and Cat Dances on the Wall, and he could tell she was stalling. She executed the forms beautifully, and he could well believe she had beaten many men, but at present there was littl sting to forms. He met Creeper Embraces the Oak simply, just keeping his sowrd in a defensive line across the face of his body, ready to parry any attack, turning to keep her before him and trying to give away as little as possible. At the first touch of Cat Dances on the Wall he pulled his sword across the face of his chest to block, then stepped backwards from the other attacks, easily dodging as she was probing only. Then he rejoined the attack with a well executed series of Striking the Spark, using the theories of boxer to alternate attacking with one sword and defending with the other in a one two combo that he kept up for several strokes. To throw in a little twist he leapt high to increase his vantage for one stroke, then as he landed he crouched down and swung low, a varation of the River undercuts the Bank.

Cari soon found out the man liked to jump around. That wasn't always a good thing to do if you didn't know the lay of the land. The yards were relatively flat with no outcropping rocks and sunken holes. He probably practiced elsewhere, acrobatics never had appealed to Cari even when she was in Saldaea watching the horsemen do amazing things. Simple and strong was always better than showing off for your opponent. Cari remembered watching a man do Thistledown Floats on the Whirlwind and wound up with a sword in his gut. Things like that leave a lasting mark on you.

Cari easily blocked the overhand blows. She'd have liked to had a dagger handy but she didn't have practice ones available. It was amazing what you took for granted. The airal manuevers she easily moved away from, having to hop backwards to avoid the undercut.

Cari watched for more attacks, looking for the proper opening, trying to leave few of her own while trying simple attacks while he was flying thru the air. Cari watched as he jumped in the air with an overhand blow. Cari blocked the blocked the blow with her sword and let his weight move her down as if she were collapsing under the weight of the blow, and as he landed Cari twisted her right leg underneath his newly found footing, sending him to the ground backwards.

Cari

She was good and she didnt just use her swords either. He discovered that as he found himslf tumbling backwards. Fortunately he had the prescence of mind to roll with it and use the momentum to come back up to his feet in time to block her next attack. It was time to play properly- simple theatrics were not going to help him in this fight, so he set his mind to use his agility only when it would help, not just for fun. He also had the sneaking suspicion she was playing with him.

His next attack displayed his grasp of sword fighting alone, a fierce combination of Apple Blossoms in the Wind with his off hand, moving into Whirlwind on the Mountain in an upwards arc, and his right hand used the Swallow Rides the Air, then moved into Leaf Floating in the Breeze. This way he was always guarding with one hand.

Cari had always disliked fighting agains two weapons with out her own. She needed her dagger or this would be a losing fight. Cari took a small snip of a hit on her right shoulder. It was the least amount of damage she could have taken with out her dagger.

Cari manuevered her way towards the weapons rack and quickly grabbed a short sword from the stack. It was too heavy to use well but it would do for the purposes she intended.

The man came at her again using both weapons and different forms. He was good but Cari could get around it if she watched long enough, she just had to keep him away from her. It was always a challege with multiple weapons or multiple opponents but there was always a way out or a way to get a win. You are playing with him. Cari smiled, her own self knew the way of things. But Cari saw no reason to trounce a man. Learning on all accounts was better, and Cari preferred to spar defensivly with new opponents.

Cari blocked one of his blades with the short sword lathe and attacked with the other she went for a killing blow, game time was over.

Cari

Terren eased up long enough for her to choose a second lathe, then quickly closed the distance. He was not currently on his best form as it was, and although he use to choose to drag fights out and use his fitness to his advantage, he didnt trust it today. She blocked and returned his attack, he was somwhat startled by the vicsciousness of it and barely managed to twist aside in time, hammering a mid height blow right back at her now.

He changed his tactics now, hoping to surprse her by going on the all out offensive with both hands. Up till now he had been defending with at least one weapon, but now he kept moving one foot in front of the other, forcing her backwards with a fierce combination of blows. His swords flew faster than he could name the forms, but he knew they were based on his training. Whenever she stopped backing up, he went for a sword lock and used his weight to force her backwards, hoping that making her lose so much ground would affect her mentality. He held nothing back from his blows now, striking hard, hard enough to rock her whenever she parried.

Cari smiled as he started an onslaught of forms. Two weapons made it all the more powerful. Pain in the void was easily avoided but the feirceness of the blows sent vibrations down her arms. It was more than awe at the force, more than alot of what this man meant to her. But Cari used the new found pleasures of the forcefulness and turned it's tide. Turned it to her advantage. A smile that made the children quiet quickly emerged. Cari could feel the children backing up ready to run. They knew the look, they knew much more than they wanted to and knew that it could turn ugly. It didn't happen often, but they'd seen it more often since the devistation and loss of their friends. Cari relished the feeling, let the shadow take hold enough to use it's power, it's lust for cruelty to take enough hold to push this man into the ground. Cari reigned in the shadow slightly, it wasn't here to kill, it was here to provided power.

Cari waited for the man to slow down, you could only do that for so long, and she was a pateint woman. It wouldn't take long. His tiredness she would use to her advantage. When the time came Cari moved quickly and carefully - overhand blows, thrusts all meant to push the holes open. Two swords provided more protection but they also required alot of cooridnation. Cari pushed and pushed. She didn't care if he lost ground or if he gained any, it wasn't about ground, it was about life. He was tired and Cari could feel her own arms weakening, it was all or nothing now.

Cari moved in quickly using her own weapons to provide and opening for her body to fit. Between his arms she held them at bay and brought her knee up quickly between his, pushing her weight into him to knock him down. Cari lost the sword, and reached for the dagger that was not there. Her hand at his throat as she lay on top of him. Blood rushing in her ears, her hand shaking at the will not to crush his throat or even grip it more than a friendly hold. It was now a struggle between her self and her shadow. A matter of wills...

Cari

Terren had made a big mistake. She had turned his right hand lathe across the face of his body and his left hand lathe in the opposite direction. Cursing himself for not defending better, he was still mildy surprised when she wrestled him to the ground. For a woman, she was very strong.

Her hand clutched at his throat, and he gagged, barely able to breathe. Light! Suddenly this was no spar! He almost beleived she was trying to kill him.

He let go of his weapons, the fight forgotten now, and got both of his hands beneath her smaller frame, striving to break her grip with his right hand. As soon as he had done so, he pushed up as hard as he could with his left hand, fairly throwing her away from him. Rolling to his feet, he leapt back from her, grabbing at his sword belt with its blades inside. The woman was insane!

"Blood and Ashes!" He growled, rubbing his sore throat. "What was that, woman?" He held his sword belt ready to draw if she came at him again. A spar was one thing, but strangulation was quite another. and besides that, there was the terrible ache, the horrible sickness feeling, of having been hit right in the tenders.

Cari fought the shadow with all her might, but it's grip had latched on and she could hardly control the force of her own hand. It was like watching from another body, nothing she could really do other than fight for control. But the Shadow as always stronger, it wanted much more than Cari was ever willing to give it unles she was out on the same mission.

The man fought free and Cari sat on the dusty ground, but Cari watched from a distance in her mind. A distance far from her own body. The Shadow leered at the man and Cari could barely control her breathing. Kate approached the man. "Maybe this was a bad idea." Taylor and Aiden sat by Cari trying to calm the beast they had unwittingly unleashed. They looked up. "We are sorry this happened. You pushed too hard and she lost control." Taylor was one of the few who actually knew Cari's cruel intentions, not because he was ever hurt by her, but because of what she was. The Great Lord provided Cari with a powerful force that sometimes was too powerful for the woman to control. The Great Lord's gift was a two edged sword.

The soothing from Aiden helped Cari calm and gain control, the shadow would never hurt the children and let Cari regain her composure. Cari stood and offered an appologetic curtsey. She did not offer him a hand, he would probably not take it. "There was no excuse for the loss of control. I think it's time I left these grounds."

Cari

Terren was confused by what he had just witnessed. He wanted to offer his hand, but held back, looking on at her. once bitten, twice shy he thought cynically. Only a fool would allow her any closer to him now. Th whole situation, the fight, the woman's irrational lack of control, even the reactions of the children, sent goosebumps up and down his back.

"Well fought." He offered, trying to make some sort of appeasement. "I have no idea what just happened." He looked at her and shook his head slowly. "You...are an unusual woman, to say the least. And very good, too...where did you learn?"

  • Author

Cari wasn't sure how to answer him. She had learned on the very ground they stood, but she couldn't exactly tell him that. But Taylor spoke up, "She was a wanderer before she came to us."

Cari shook her head. "I learned a little here and a little there. My teachers were very good." That was the truth and she even kept in touch with on of her betters. Sam had after all been the Master at Arms once upon a time.

She hadn't lied to him, she hadn't even left anything out. Cari had learned here, and she had learned in other places as well.

Cari

Terren nodded slowly. He thought it was more likely he had been tutored by a master, but he had no right to pry.

"Well, it has been good meeting you...Cari?" he said. He paused for a moment, considered his next words carefully before he said them. "And if you ever need help..." he paused again. He didn't even know her, but there was something wrong here, for sure. "Well, I'm always around." He smiled gently and buckled his swords back on his belt, ready to continue training.

Cari nodded at his offer of help and replied before he turned to leave, "Today is our last day in Tar Valon, we will be heading home tomorrow."

Cari heard the kids grumble aboug that, it was a long trip. "It was nice meeting you."

Cari rounded the kids up and decide it was best to leave the yards now. "Mommy, can we visit the Ogier Grove?" Cari smiled, it would be good to see her old spots, perhaps let the children learn a little balance as well.

Cari showed the children the way to the Grove and some of her favorite spots. They stopped for a bit of lunch at the place Cari enjoyed teaching balance. A small little part of the river that was deeper than the rest, a stack of barrels lined the shore. They sat down and watched the animals and listened to the sights. It was nice to be back in the Ogier Grove, even if only for a short while.

The children were eager to see all the trees the Ogier had planted, but even more in awe of the creeks sights. "Mommy, what are the barrels for you think?"

Cari smiled and untied the rope that held them to shore. "Probably for balance training. Come we'll try. But first Aiden and Taylor go fetch some sticks for a warm fire." The boys hurried off while Cari removed her clothes and pulled out a shirt she could use to swim in. She had come prepared for the events, fighting in a skirt was one thing, but swimming was not doable, besides Aki would kill her if she got the clothes too wet.

The boys returned and started a fire and then jumped into the water. Kate followed and then so did Cari. "The water is moving, but not enough to make you lose your balance. Your first attempt at mastering balance would be to stand on top of the barrel for as long as you can."

Cari pulled a barrel close to her and started to climb on board. She managed to get on top but fell backwards. It had been a while. The kids giggled but were struck dumb when Cari managed to get to the top of the barrel and stand on it.

Cari was instructing the children in balance and they were listening intently. None of them realized someone had stood behind a bush watching them. He wasn't hiding, just standing watching a woman and three children playing on the barrels that the Tower used for some balance training as well.

Aiden tossed Cari a stick upon her request and she flawlessly preformed Heron Wading in the Rushes atop the barrel. "One day if you practice enough you'll be able to do that." The boys clapped gleefully at the show and Kate turned with an "eep". Cari turned to find the man, who she vaguely recognized watching with a smile.

Cari stepped off the barrel and waded to the side of the creek. "We'll be leaving now." The grove was a public place but she didn't want more people recognizing her than already had this trip. Too many people.

"You don't have to on my account, I was just watching."

Cari smiled, and turned to the children. "I do think it's time we get going." They complained but the boys set off to find more fire wood to warm by the fire. "We will just warm up and dry off then be on our way."

Kate hide behind a bush as she dressed, Cari had no modesty left and turned her back to the causual by stander. "I'll be changing clothes." It didn't matter to her if he watched or not. She drew the wet shirt off and stood in nothing before him. The scars and tattoos that decorated her back were clear where her auburn hair wasn't pasted to her back. Cari dressed quickly and pulled her hair back in a pony tail just as the boys arrived to pile a few more branches on the fire. She hated wearing a pony tail here, but her hair was wet and tangled from the creek and it would look less lady like if left to drape and drip.

Cari pulled a make up case from her pouch and freshened her make up.

"Do much training like that in the city?"

Cari shook her head. "No sir, This is only my second trip to Tar Valon. I'm only here to retreive Talyn Rashad's things and return him home for a proper burial."

He nodded. "What a shame."

Cari didn't respond, but he continued, "Where did you learn that move?" He indicated the barrels as the form she'd done.

"I picked it up from someone traveling through an inn I was staying at. I learned from whoever would teach me. He told me that it would help with balance, and made sure I never would use it in battle after I had perfected it." He nodded. Cari could see the man was skilled and a could be a challenge. "Perhaps we could test your Tower training versus my home grown version with a friendly spar?" It was a lie, Cari was after all trained right here, but she had to stick to her story of Cari Namere.

Cari

The woman looked familiar, but Brand couldn’t place her. He had been in and out of the yards for many years, before his position as Commander of the Guard gave him a more permanent need to be there. While he missed the travelling, he found that he could get used to getting to know the people of the yards a little better. Perhaps the woman just looked like someone he’d seen on his travels years ago. Perhaps… Brand decided to stick around for a while, to figure out why she reminded him of someone he had known at some point in his life.

“I accept your challenge, fair maiden.” He winked at her, before grinning at her children. If those were all hers, then she was still in good shape despite of it. Then again, his own Isabella had bourn him five children, and she was still as desirable as she had always been. “But first I will require your name, so that I may remember properly as someone I’ve bested.” He smiled warmly to show that he was jesting. While Brand Ryota was pretty sure that he could best this woman, he also knew that he would never fall because he underestimated an opponent.

“You can call be Brand.” He said, still smiling at her. He took the branch the boy had been using before. “When you’re ready.” He said, swinging the branch a couple of times to get a feel for it. Of course it was no dao blade, cutting through the air with strength and precision, but it would do for a spar. It was probably best that it wasn’t an actual blade either. Before he knew how skilled this woman was, he wouldn’t risk fighting her with something that could cause some serious accidents.

Cari smiled. "My name is Cari." She curtsied a respectful bow, but nothing to show subservience. She was no one's lesser, not even on the ranch. Cari had rather expected to go to the Yards, but sticks will do just fine.

Cari hated sparring in skirts but it was all she had, though she had learned many many years ago before the twins were even able to walk how to move with the fabric of a skirt or dress restricting movements. It was always a good thing that Cari decided to wear flowing skirts and dresses unless she was seducing a man. She smiled, this was no seduction but it was noneless a dance.

Cari removed her daggers from her sleeves, she'd replaced them after getting out of the water by habit. There was no need to harm him with real blades. Cari found two suitable sticks to place under the dagger's straps, she hated fighting with out her daggers in reserve, then took up a branch that wouldn't break when they hit.

Cari smiled and bowed slightly to her now opponent. "It will be a pleasure." Cari entered the void flawlessly and the shadow stayed at bay, it had been worked over earlier and it was not interested in playing with sticks.

Cari started to circle Brand, waiting for his first move. She sent out tenative thrusts with her stick to see if he'd be pushed into reacting first. She hoped he was of a like mind and waiting for her to attack.

Cari

  • 2 weeks later...

There was little doubt about the fact that the woman he was facing now had skills beyond what she claimed to have. False modesty was not a trait Brand liked to see in a woman, but he respected her motives, whatever they might be. Soon enough they were circling each other, with Cari faking an attack every now and then, and Brand staying very still, observing her. Though she was much smaller than he, she matched her steps to his, keeping a sure footing at all times. “Impressive.” He said, smiling faintly before launching into his first attack.

The falcon stoops was aimed straight for Cari’s chest. Easily blocked, as Brand had expected, but it was merely a test. The entire battle was merely a test. Her hold on the improvised practise sword was firm, and she didn’t flinch, showing him that she did not fear his attack. That encouraged him to attack again, this time with The courtier taps his fan, changed halfway through to slice at her from a lower position with Tower of Morning. Her defences held.

Brand backed away a pace or two, leaving her space for her own attacks. He was eager to find out what this strange woman could do. Deep inside he still believed that he had seen her before, but he decided it mattered little. An entertaining spar was an entertaining spar, no matter who his opponent really was.

Cari smiled at the familiar forms, it wasn't often you saw perfection on the road. Brand was a Grand Master, she knew this much by the way he fought by the way he held himself. She wondered where on the food chain he sat. Things had changed, Reikan was no longer Master at Arms, he was sitting at the Ranch being Sam, a simple ranch hand. Cari smiled as she slipped into Boar Rushes Down the Mountain, and directly into Tower of the Morning and back down into The Courtier Taps his fan. All were met with blocks but his return landed a smack to her left arm. Sticks seemed to hurt more than practice swords. Maybe it's the denser material.

Cari's thoughts distracted her and Brand made a quick move she wasn't prepared for. Arc of the Moon and Cari drew her dagger a moment too late. Had it been a real fight she would have lost her head instead of gaining a inch wide welt across her throat. Cari sighed.

"Well that wasn't a very good spar on my end. Perhaps there is a better place to do this, some place with out sticks?" Cari knew where it was that he was from, but she wanted him to offer instead of assuming she knew her way around the White Tower.

  • 4 weeks later...

Brand bowed slightly, accepting Cari’s defeat. The sticks were a little hard to fight with. Not that Brand really minded, he enjoyed a spar no matter what weapon he used. “Let’s go to the warders yards then.” He waited for a moment for her to gather her children, before escorting her to a less populated area of the yards. Something told him that Cari preferred a more private sparring session, as opposed to one where every single trainee of the yards watched them spar, trying to learn from them.

He ran off for a moment, retrieving two practise swords. They felt better in the hand than the sticks they had used before. “Ready?” He asked, waiting only for a slight nod from Cari before charging. It was a move he’d stolen from Vasya. It was designed to put your opponent off balance from the very beginning of the spar. If you moved swiftly after that, it was only a matter of a few moves before the spar was over.

Cari didn't have time to smile as Brand made a quick attack. It was a nice tactic but she rarely used it. Cari managed to avoid the brunt of the charge but he was quicker and stronger than she was so the collision jarred her bones, but not enough to stop her own attack while he was recovering.

The lathe felt better than the stick and being on a more predictable surface was much easier to spar on with someone who was clearly better than she was. It would take luck to bet him.

Cari could hear the children amazing at the foot work the two displayed. It had been a long time since she'd been challeneged by an opponent. Sam was slowly becoming her equal and she was greatful for those spars, but she was starting to beat him as much as he beat her. The former Master at Arms would soon be a fair match she was certain of that.

Brand and Cari danced and it was much longer than the last time. She was truely enjoying the spar. It had come around again for Cari to attack. She was tiring but she had the will to win, or so she hoped. Brand easily stayed her attack before beginning his own.

OOC: How about a good thumping to end this round. I'll let you write it hehe.
