Continuing the idea of giving each month a theme, for July, we shall be focusing on the musical genius that was Michael Jackson, who recently passed away. All our activities will be based on his music. TUNE OR NO TUNE As a result, for the following weeks, songs by Michael Jackson will be picked for "Tune or No Tune": - Monday 29th June 2009 - Monday 6th July 2009 - Monday 13th July 2009 - Monday 20th July 2009 - Monday 27th July 2009 If you want to nominate a Michael Jackson song for "Tune or No Tune", please contact me by PM or email (shen_an_calhar@hotmail.co.uk). Everybody has probably heard of this by now, but last night (Thursday 25th June 2009), the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, died of a heart attack. Many considered him one of the greatest musicians alive, but his live was surrounded in controversy, especially in his later years. It is also a massive blow for fans, especially those who had forked out for his upcoming concerts in the O2 arena in London. Below is the BBC article on the story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8119993.stm

For June, I am giving you the chance to pick your favourite songs and why you love them! And as a result, I'm giving you the power to run things this month. TUNE OR NO TUNE As a result, for the following weeks, I will be happy to allow others to pick songs for "Tune or No Tune": - Monday 8th June 2009 - Monday 15th June 2009 - Monday 22nd June 2009 - Monday 29th June 2009 If you want to do a "Tune or No Tune", copy the format I use at DM. (link to a model thread). It needs a brief summary (I'm happy to post a generic one for those interested to use), as well as a bit about the song and why you give it the vote of Tune. Also provide a YouTube clip, a…

Well, it is time to conclude the "It's A Knockout" for the Eurovision Song Contest that has been running throughout the month of May. The winners from the Eurovision Song Contest were split between 1956-1982 and 1983 to 2008. From these two threads, the two winning songs will go head to head in order to earn the title of "DM's Best Eurovision Song Contest" winner. And we now have those two songs. The post below will highlight the winning songs. All you need to do is vote for your favourite out of the two, and the song with the most votes at the end of the voting period will be crowned the champion. Happy voting!

Oh admit it, you have long wanted a chance to dunk your favorite (or least) archer in some water(it has to be water instead of brew to avoid spot fines...lol). Now's your chance at.... [glow=red,2,300]The Dunk Tank[/glow] A WoT trivia game. *At random times various archers (Or banders on spot fine, hinthint) will be placed in the dunk tank for one weeks time. *Anyone can challenge the dunkee, by approaching the bench and stating which books they have read. *3 sand bag tipped daggers will be provided to the challenger. *The dunkee will then ask a question based on the WoT books listed by the challenger. *If the challenger can answer right then th…

The "It's A Knockout" for The Worst Single Ever was won by Technohead's I Wanna Be A Hippy. It was awful and beat The Cheeky Girl's The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) in the Final. In the 3rd/4th Play-Off, Mr Blobby's self-titled single Mr Blobby beat Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby. "It's A Knockout" returns this week, and we are sticking with the longer format - and this means there are 16 songs instead of 8! As the Eurovision Song Contest isn't far away for us Europeans, that is the theme for this month's contest. Howeever, it is slightly different in the fact there are two running concurrently, with the two winning tracks going head-to-head. I have done this as there is a…

Of late, I have been trying to give each month a music theme. March saw Classical Music, while April saw Terrible Music as voted by the general public. This month we are switching to the Eurovision Song Contest. Background Information For those of you who don't know (mainly those outside Europe), we Europeans have a musical contest during the month of May. It has been running for some 50+ years, and has expanded considerably over the last decade or so due to the inclusion of Eastern Europe. Each country that decides to participate that year sends a group with a song. It has gotten so large that we know have to have Semi-Finals in order to determine which countries …

Well, here is a thread for general discussion about the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, which this year is being held in Moscow, Russia after Dima Bilan's victory last year. Feel free to chat about previous competitions, previous winners, views for the forthcoming competition this year, why you love or hate the ESC - basically anything and everything about the contest. One hot topic at the moment is Georgia, who have withdrawn this year after their winning song was refused entry as it supposedly mocked Russian PM, Vladimir Putin, according the Eurovision Organisers. The song was We Don't Wanna Put In. As a result, Georgia are hosting a rival contest, with the sole purp…

Now, with just under 20 minutes to go until we head back of to Moscow for the 54th European Song Contest. I hope everyone is getting settled in, whether it is front of the TV or using the live streaming from the official Eurovision Website (you need to install something called OctoShape to get the streaming working, which is linked from the website). http://www.eurovision.tv/esctv?program=2750 Now is the time to get your supply of beers, wine, spirits and snacks. I'm pretty much set up and waiting for the show to begin. Tuesday and Thursday saw the 2 semi-finals to find the 20 other qualifiers to go with Russia (the hosts and champions), the UK, Spain, Germany…

And with less than 15 minutes to go until the thrills and spills of the second semi-final, it's time to get comfy and settle in for some more Eurovision 2009. Again, I will be your host for this evening's entertainment, posting my comments on the show. Tonight seems Greece and Norway, two of the favourites, battle it out to take a place in the Grand Final on Saturday. And just a quick rundown on how tonight is to work. 5 countries (Russia as last year's winners, UK, France, Germany and Spain) are all guarenteed a place in the final. However, the remaining 37 countries have to battle it out for the remaining 20 places. So tonight is the second of the semi-finals. 19 …

And it is less than 30 minutes until the big start - Eurovision 2009 will officially be underway. And I will be your host for this evening's entertainment, passing my glorious comments on tonight's proceedings. I haven't had a big look into the songs tonight, but I know there are a lot of ballads this year - is this because the last two winners have been ballads? And just a quick rundown on how tonight is to work. 5 countries (Russia as last year's winners, UK, France, Germany and Spain) are all guarenteed a place in the final. However, the remaining 37 countries have to battle it out for the remaining 20 places. So tonight is the first of the semi-finals. 18 countr…

This is an interesting award, as it is shared between pop and classical music. Some big names have won this prize in the past, as shown below, and Peter Gabriel adds his name to that list. Below is the article from the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8045524.stm

The "It's A Knockout" for Classical Music was won by Gustav Holst's Jupiter from the Planets suite, which beat Carl Orff's O Fortuna in the Final. In the 3rd/4th Play-Off, Richard Wagners's The Ride of the Valkyries triumphed over Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. "It's A Knockout" returns this week, and we are sticking with the longer format - and this means there are 16 songs instead of 8! The usual rules of a vote a day contines though, so make sure you post your votes. And for the next two or so weeks (Wednesday 15th April 2009 to Wednesday 29th April 2009), we will be concentrating on those terrible songs that have graced the music industry. Picking just …

Alright so, here in St Louis we have this rock icon. It is a radio station called KSHE 95. They have been rocking the Gateway City for more than 40 years. For the past several years in sequence with College Hoops(March Madness), KSHE runs their March Bandness, a bracketed competition pitting various rock acts against each other, much like the competitions Corki has been running here. I know this doesn't fit in with the Classical Month theme, but I thought it would be interesting to see some people's bracket choices.

I just read this on the BBC and as a regular last.fm user, I don't agree with the decision, but understand why they did it. I know it won't affect me as a UK listener, but it isn't right to charge all except for UK, US and German listeners. As a result, it led me to look at Spotify, which at first look, does not appear to be as user friendly as last.fm. Anyway, here is the link to the article, as well as the article in full. I look forward to what some of you have to say about this issue. LINK: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7963812.stm
