Intellectual thought and tenacity are two ideals that have furthered civilization and society since the beginning. After all, where would be without the wheel, without shelter, without fire, without cell phones? As approximately half of Earth's population, women throughout history have contributed to the betterment of their people. Countless women, some of whom will never be recognized for their ideas and inventions, have not only made the world a better place, but have stood up against oppressive societies, honoring the fight that their ancestors began and encouraging the rest of us to do the same. These women that came before us were brave enough to stand up for what th…

With all these wonderful discussions going around I thought it might be nice to share some of our favorite stories, poems, books etc… These can be inspirational for women, written by women, or written about women. Please post links or snippets of you can so people can get to know your favorites. *cuts ribbon* Also stay tuned for the music and TV / Movies threads! I’ll start off with one of my favorite poets, Emily Dickenson. Not only is she a female poet writing in a time where most writers were male, but she has also written some beautiful verses that I find inspirational. Here is one of her shorter works: If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall n…

Welcome one and all to International Women's Week 2011 by the Red Ajah. My name is Veranza and I will be monitoring "Who Inspires You"! For the next two week we will be discussing what women have inspired you in your life, love, career, education and however in your life. Many of us have had more than one women inspire us throughout our lives, but let us start out slow and go with one at a time. I will start and state that the first woman that ever inspired me to do better was Janet Evans, Olympic Swimmer. I started swimming competitively at age 4 and I remember in 1988 watching her at age 7, in Seoul winning 3 gold medal and than again in 1992 in Spain with a gold an…

Hi there. It's been a long while, but Mirshann pulled me out from under my rock. Well, for a spell anyways. I'm hoping I can reconnect with you guys and try to stay at least moderately active, however, my workload has just increased by exponentials of 10, so I actually don't have much down time here anymore. I'm not even blogging! And if you remember me for my blogs, you Know that's serious! So what have I been up to? Well, I'm still fostering cats although I have decided this will be the last year to work with my current rescue and I'm well over due for a fostering hiatus. I've stopped doing admin for them and I'm not taking any more cats after these I ha…

IWW website Women and religion. Most of you can hear the big heavy doors shutting women out of every religious arena, right? As in other areas of life - art, literature, science - women have found it difficult to serve in the church. Of course, in religion, it is said that God is opposed to women in leadership/authority roles. It's hard to argue with that, right? Argue with it we must!! This is a hot button topic for me as I'm sure it is for many of you. Below are links for you to peruse in order to have a better understanding of the evolution of womens' standing and role in religion. I've included Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism so we can bless and cu…

Hello everyone and welcome!!! Please, take your seats, pens and papers, and get ready for this awesome game who everyone loves! Last year I was the host too, and I loved it! The winner was Adella! This year, since Red Ajah's International Women's Week lasts a bit longer, the quiz will be much more fun, and we will have more time to do it properly! The rules are quite simple and go like this: In this game I will be posting a couple of quotes every two days, and you will be given a list of women who might have said it. Your job will be to send me a PM and tell me who do you think said what, and I will be announcing the winner every two days, and …

Welcome to Red Ajah International Women's Week Cultural Thread: A woman's role in a patriarchal world was one of a shadow, an ornament or a work horse. She was to be seen and not heard and if She had opinions She kept those to herself. There were women whose brilliance was more often than not hidden behind a subservient smile at dinner when men of lesser intellect expounded on the truths of the day. They walked in and out of art galleries knowing that they too were capable of works that would rival those that hung on the walls but they also knew no one would look upon their works because they were just women and what did a woman know of art. What we are here…

Welcome to the Red Ajah Celebration of International Women’s Week! In this thread, we celebrate Women as Teachers and Educators! Over the next few weeks, we will be discussing the various Women in History who have contributed to Education, either though the building of schools, the specific Education of their children, or other contributions to Education. Today, I introduce Fatima Al-Fihri (c. 800 AD, the European Middle Ages). Fatima Al-Fihri was a well-educated Muslim woman born to a prestigious famil. When she inherited a fortune from her father, she and her sister decided to spend their money to improve their communities. Instead of seeki…

*fnorrll leads the last of the Warders, the bravest, the strongest, those that made it all the way, still carrying the now tattered banner of the white tower proudly* We are back, Aes Sedai! We have lost some along the way, to fatigue, exhaustion, (boredom??) some fell to the sword, the fang, the claw, saidin, saidar, the dark ones servants and to the enticement of the dark side (oh wait, wrong genre) but we carried your honour all the way! Now we have returned for our heroes welcome and a huge welcome home orgy party!

It is Robert Jordan's vast work of fiction that has brought all of us together. His ability of weaving a story so complex and alluring has captivated all of us, and there is nothing more captivating than his collection of full bodied and wholly three dimensional characters. One factor that has set his work apart from others of it's genre is his use of female characters, some of whom we love and others we absolutely hate. Here is a place where we can discuss what female characters have had an impact on you, whether they are your favorite character or not. The Wheel of Time series is filled with strong women, and some who are not so strong, but they have left some so…

Tynaal walks up to gorgeous old building and opens the doors. "I am pleased to welcome you to this year's International Womens' Week presented by the Red Ajah. As you follow me into these halls you will find an array of artworks by prominent female painters, all through the ages. Be welcome, and enjoy! " Sofonisba Anguissola ( 1532 – 1625 ) Born into an affluent family, Sofonisba Anguissola’s mother died at a very young age. Her aristocrat father made sure that Sofonisba’s and her sisters received a well-rounded education that included the fine arts. Although it was rare for female artists to receive any recognition during her time, Anguissola’s ext…

If you are 36, or older, you might think this is hilarious! When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways...yadda, yadda, yadda And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that I'm over the ripe old age of forty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compa…

Hello everyone, I'm sure by now you've noticed all the Red Ajah's International Women's Week threads and blogs. Well, there's more! As most of you know, the Red Ajah's International Women's Week is based on the real life International Woman's Day event that occurs each year on 8th March. This year marks the 100th anniversary of this event and we decided that deserved extra attention. We are all fans of the Wheel of Time and as such, we all identify in one way or another with the concept of the Servant of All. The ideal in which people put themselves in service of others is something I'm sure we've all dreamed of at one point and perhaps…

This year is a great year in the International Women’s Day. For 100 years, IWD has been honoring those women who are such a big part of everyone’s life. International Women’s Day was originally National Women’s Day and started in 1909, in the US. By 1910 Clara Zetkin, of Germany, proposed a day for celebration and realization in every country. Thus by 1911, International Women’s day was born. This year the IWW celebration at DM is one of the largest the Red Ajah has ever organized. This year, not only is the Red Ajah and the White Tower Org of DM participating in IWW, but the entire WoT fandom is raising awareness of women everywhere. Individuals from Dragonmount and…

Sorry about that, I was lost in the blight. There I was surrounded by ten dead trollocs, and with only a pair of wet pants to hold them off. But I had on me the Aiel's favorite treat for combat. Spearmint. You know, I should really cover my face when I tell a joke like that. It's been awhile since I've caused mischief. Any requests?
