What is your favorite winter sport? When I was a child, I loved to watch figure skating, fueled on by films such as The Cutting Edge. This was about the time Nancy Kerrigan became famous, and not long after, Tonya Harding became infamous. I gravitated toward Kristi Yamaguchi and Oksana Baiul. As I grew up, I stopped watching the sport. Flash forward to 2016 when the anime Yuri on Ice came into being. My love for ice skating drew me to the show, and I'm glad it did! It's amazing, a show many real life figure skaters love because of how accurately it portrays the sport and the relationships established within it. Last weekend, my husb…

History of the Winter Olympics Although the Summer Olympics had cemented itself as a major world sporting event, the introduction of the Winter version was delayed for some time by Sweden, which staged its own very successful Nordic Games, held every four or five years from 1901-26. Also the Summer Games had hosted some winter sports prior to their being a separate Winter Olympic Games. At the 1908 and 1920 summer Olympic Games, the program inculded what are now winter Olympic sports of Figure Skating and Ice Hockey. Organizers of the 1916 Summer Games in Berlin planned to introduce a “Skiing Olympia,” featuring nordic events in the Black F…

Welcome to the annual White Ajah Winter Carnival, and welcome to Winter Olympic Trivia, where you will be trusted not to Google for the answers like I did to come up with the questions! Some sort of fabulous prizes will be awarded or something, and all kinds of fun will be had in the process! I might prove to be more of a cross-country skier than a luge competitor, but I will try to acknowledge correct answers promptly and ask new questions right away. Let's begin, shall we? 1) Which amazing city turned down a chance to host the Winter Olympics after begging for the opportunity for the previost twenty years, and then asked again nearly …

It doesn't really matter what kind of life you lead, at one point in time we all are faced with and have to fight our own personal battles. they cover the gambit too, from addictions, to abuses, to health issues, to loss and family problems. mental health, emotional scars you name it. they may not even affect you directly but someone close to you. as a result we may all be scarred but for a great many our personal battles become a place to take a stance. to be a warrior for the cause, to stand in when others can no longer stand up. so here, here is the place to tell us about your battleground, is there a cause you have taken up? something you donate time or mone…

In this discussion, you can share what sort of experiences you have or are interested in with martial arts. When most people think of martial arts, the first thing that may come to mind is an East Asian art, such as "kung fu," karate, or tae kwon do. This is in part due to its popularisation in media for the past several decades, as well as the availability of teachers. There are many other kinds of martial arts, however - many cultures had multiple styles of how to fight with a given weapon or hand-to-hand. Because of centuries of disuse in favour of gun use and "conventional" warfare, much of European martial arts have been largely forgotten; in recent times, thoug…

They assist wounded and disabled veterans. They risk their lives providing health care in some of the darkest places in the world. They rescue flood victims and provide everyday necessities. They stand up for LGBT rights. They help children who are fighting poverty and a lack of opportunities. They rescue hurt and abandoned animals. They clean up rivers, beaches, and lakes. This is a place where we can share our ideas and stories about everyday heroes. We may learn of them through television and news reports. We may hear of them from friends or groups. Please join in.

It is important to recognize those who chose to serve their country. As DM is comprised of an international community, we represent various countries. We would like to take the moment to acknowledge those of our community who have served in their country's military. My father was in the United States Army. When I graduated high school I tried to enlist, but due to medical restrictions, I was unable to. I would like to recognize my father and his service. If you have served, please let us know. If there is someone in your family, a parent, spouse, child, who served, feel free to take this opportunity to recognize them as well. We thank you for your dedication a…

In honour of Canadian Remembrance Day, the Green Ajah will be commemorating warriors, both our resident DM warriors and those abroad in the world. But of course, a warrior is not merely a soldier. A warrior fights for his people, but he also fights for himself. Wars are fought on the battlefield as well as in the mind and for justice. So we will be discussing topics not only dealing with martial experiences but also those who fight or have fought for others, or who are fighting their own internal troubles. We hope you will join us and share your experiences, whether of what you have fought for or the warriors who fought and changed your life. Activities will run …

Welcome one and all to the Middle Earth Field Trip and Discussion. I encourage you to find a comfortable place to sit as we begin our discussion at where J.R.R. Tolkien's two most famous stories began The Shire, Here I'd love discuss your favorite things about the Shire; who were your favorite Hobbit families? What's your favorite bit about shire history? To start I have to say the one Hobbit family that makes me laugh the most are the Longbottoms. Seriously, how did they get their name? Was it because they have one of those butts that just doesn't exist, their back just melds into their legs? I used to think maybe they rode around in long bottom …

Please join me in a grand adventure of our creation! Frodo Baggins, Merry Brandybuck, Samwise Gamgee & Pippin Took are our main charachters. Please feel free to add new characters to the story. Add no more than 6 words at a time. I will start the story.... It was not a day like any other day. The shire far behind them, this trip would surely be their last. Frodo sat in the bow of the boat, watching the dense forest flitter past, as though it were moving, not they. He hated boats. There wasn't enough Brandybuck blood in him to like a boat. Ever. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw Merry grab Pippin's cloak ju…

Welcome to Mashi's Movie Rewatch: The Fellowship of the Ring! It's been probably eight or nine years since I've watched these films and I thought this would be a great opportunity to view them all again. We'll start with The Fellowship of the Ring, the first in the series. The film originally opened in the US on December 10, 2001, with an extended version released the next year on DVD and VHS (which really dates how long ago the film came out!). For this purpose, I'll be viewing the extended version. I'm going to watch this tomorrow, (Monday the 9th) around 11am EST. I'll post my comments as I'm going through, with things I like, dislike, or anything that stan…

Want to go on a hike? how about a weird one? I thought so.... we all love the weird lets just face it. And there is plenty odd and curious things on this lovely planet. In fact we'll take a tour of it all. Here's how it works: YOU pick the destination, be it a state or a country, and I'll find some weird nature in it and take you for a tour. To keep from crowding we'll do ONE location at a time so first come first serve. You can be as specific on the location as you want, you can also try and stump me. But I'm willing to bet that there's something a little odd and curious in any nook or cranny. So grab your hiking stick, get some snack…
