Would Rand be considered a tragic hero? If so what makes him so? Obviously we know his story is a tragic one but that doesn't necessarily make someone a tragic hero by the ancient Greek drama terms. What do u guys think?

  2. Hi there - I'm trying to remember/find a chapter in KOD(?). Matt attacks a Seanchan army with primarily crossbows. In the chapter Prince of Ravens it's remarked by a high ranking Seanchan "That's all you ever had" (Crossbow men) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

On a reread of TEotW yesterday, I noticed that unpicking weaves is not a skill restricted to the Aiel wise bones, but known to Moiraine as well. When she's in the blight nearing the eye. Mat asks why they are waiting. Her reply is From the reaction to Aviendha later, it does look like the Aes Sedai do consider it too dangerous to teach though.

When I read these sacred books of mine I always have music playing. The reason I do this is because every now and then I hear a song that to me has significant meaning with a scene that I am reading in the books. I just finished my second re-read of Towers of Midnight and there was a point that I got to where I thought the song matched really well with the scene I was reading. Normally songs will attach themselves to the story based on how I feel while reading or as I stated above they just fit really well with what is going on in the story. I got the the chapter "Into The Void" and since it was a re-read I already knew what was going to happen. As soon as I started …

Hi, So I am currently working on creating my own map of the full wheel of time world. Effectively it would be the map here but scaled up and with all the detail of the smaller maps (examples here and here). I am intrigued over the size of the oceans and specifically the Morenal Ocean. This is the sea between Seanchan and Shara. Is the size correct? In this map it is evidently very small because when you measure this (assuming the borders of the map continues on the other side) it is only 2000 miles across. My question is why the empire never considered mounting an assault on Shara considering it is over 10,000 miles closer than 'randland'. I know that Sha…

In the matter of men vs women and The Power, it seems there is always balance. I mean, that's obvious, given how much RJ has quacked on about the subject in the books, but during a re-listen of the series, a question came up in my head that, to the best of my knowledge, hasn't been resolved anywhere. Balance can be found everywhere. Men are stronger in Fire and Earth, Women are stronger in Water and Air, they're both equal in spirit. Men can't link together, but they are, in general, able to hold more of The Power than women. Women are able to link together, but in order to go beyond 13, they need to use men. Those are just the few (obvious) examples I can t…

  11. I was just recalling Nestelle din Sakura South Star's bargain with Mat prior to her release. She stated he will be "remembered and was a great and good man" (paraphrase); does this mean that the new or acting Mistress of Ships will officially recognize him with an honorary title such as Swordmaster to the Coramoor? The Sea Folk seem to be very big on formality and ceremony, it's hard to believe they will leave it at "Thanks, Mat" if they meet him again. Also, I hope they will speak up for Mat if Egwene gives him any grief about marrying Fortuona.

So, have been re-reading ToM and am curious whether the Seanchan will launch their attack against the White Tower or not. While it seems obvious that they would, and this would have dire consequences for the Aes Sedai, I just don't think it will be a simple attack. It seems like it may coincide with an attack of Shadowspawn or something. Or that the attack will not happen at all as something will occur that makes the Seanchan unable to or no longer willing to. I am curious what the thoughts are out there on this?

  13. Setting: (aMoL) Caemlyn has been saved thanks to Rand rallying the forces at FoM and Mat leading an overwhelming counterattack. Rand never had a chance to make an announcement about the Seals, thus denying Egwene her chance to oppose and lead the anti-breaking coalition. After the emergency is resolved all of the Rulers decide to take their armies and Gate back to their homelands to secure their local Waygates. Later on, a furious Egwene is back in the WT meeting with her closest advisors: Egwene: That insufferable man, he knew why I brought all the Rulers there and he hijacked the meeting and made himself the "unquestionable" hero. Now it will be months before an…

  14. In the Seanchan thread in structured discussion,it was asked whether defending ones self from being made damane by killing the Seachan is a violation of the three oaths. My argument is no. Lives can be in danger in more ways than death. Being made into Damane is the same as dying. Damane retain nothing of their former selves at the end, they're Tessi or whoever and are brainwashed. In my opinion, the enforced slavery and brainwashing threatens the very existence of Aes Sedai. If they're made Damane, the Aes Sedai die out. If you lose your humanity, you lose your life. Damane become pets, they aren't seen as people. They don't even see themselves as people. On th…

This is my personal theory on what it will be, sorry if it's been thought of before. Basing my thoughts on the idea that Rand will die, and be resurrected after, there is likely going to be a time of disarray while the forces of light try and deal with the loss. During this time, I believe that Logain will step up to the plate and assume control of the armies of the light, or at least rally them. That could possibly explain the crown Min saw while looking at him. Of course, this is also based on the idea that Logain and the non - dark friend Ashaman will defeat Taim's forces. Thoughts? *edited to fixx general illegibility

I've just read ToM, and seem surprised there is a consensus on here that the future Aviendha saw will not turn out to be the real one (aka that it can still be avoided). Is there a reason everyone thinks so? I canot find any thread discussing the vericity of these viewings. I'm honestly flabbergasted this vision gets ignored by most when discussing the future of Randland

Well, haven't posted here in a while. I've been busy with life and reading. I just started the next book, A Crown of Swords. I think I'm in the first or second chapter; I forget. I just wanted to say, I think the (last?) chapter in the last book (Lord of Chaos) called, "Domani Wells" was by far the coolest thing I've read so far. Haha. The Asha'man (I think they are called that) are just awesome. Taim is also really surprising me; I had this weird feeling that he had some kind of contempt for The Dragon Reborn. Maybe I'm right, though - who knows? Anyway, I just wanted to discuss things up to here if anyone is interested.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but why didn't Moghedian use the true power to escape from the a'dam throughout Lord of Chaos? In "Mindtra" ch 25 in A Crown of Swords, early on as she's being led to the Pit of Doom she mentions something about the true power being washed over her, which I took to mean she had access to it at that point (wasn't until later that it was mentioned that only Morindin had access to it). In "Writings" in Towers of Midnight, Graendal mentions sensing Morindin's true power gateway telling herself that at least she still has access to the true power. Rand, in one of my favorite scenes, was able to use the True Power to escape the domin…

  20. I just wanted to point out a common misconception of Moiraine, everyone assumes she is in the same boat as reincarnate Lanfear, however it is the exact oposite since she came out with the angreal jewelry item, she specifically mentions to thom that with that item she is several times more powerful than she was before entering that doorway, yes without it she is about the strength of siuan, however with it i believe she is on par with nynaeve and moghedien(last part is speculation since it doesn't state just how much stronger she actually is)

  21. Started by Gabriel Kross,

The fight between Slayer and Perrin has already happened and has already been concluded. The dream spike battle between slayer and perrin, and egwene vs mesana is when Slayer died. Slayer was trapped in a nightmare of Dragonmount erupting when perrin destroyed the dream spike slayer believed the nightmare and fell into the lava (what happens in TAR happens in the waking world) hence Slayer is dead. I just wanted to point this out because I've seen several people say Perrin will fight Slayer in the LB which is not possible the DO is not going to bring back someone who was a complete failure in his service to him.

We haven't seen or heard from them for awhile, but there are still packs of darkhounds roaming the land. I would think they would figure in Perrin's storyline in TG, but Slayer is also a loose end. I'm thinking that perhaps Slayer will lead the darkhounds and Perrin will lead the wolves in a battle. Since such a battle may be problematic in the real world, I think it would take place in TR. Thoughts and opinions anyone?

I have read and reread WOT from start to towers of midnight. I would love to see a movie or movies made from the books and to do Robert Jordan honor they would need to follow the books to the tee. I was saddened by the Passing of one of the true legends of fantasy novels. His WOT series has me wanting more.I know that AMOL is the last book that will focus on the characters that Robert Jordan created and we have all come to love. I just hope that in the not to distant future i get to see a movie trailer for Wheel Of Time: Eye Of The World.

  24. Started by Bromo Sapien,

My question is pretty simple: can you use two sa'/angreal at the same time? The flows from two sa'angreal would probably be too much for anyone to handle but could a weaker Aes Sedai or someone like Rand who can hold a HUMONGOUS amount be able to channel from an angreal into another sa'/angreal to the target? From the way RJ described using an angreal as flowing through it, I don't see why not as long as you can handle it and not burn out. I see them kind of like crystals refracting light except with the Power and you can shine light through multiple crystals.

  25. Started by baalsmistress,

This is an offshoot of another thread, but it's enough of a different point that I thought it deserved it's own thread. In the present age of the WoT we have 3 ta'veren that are essentially a triumverate that need to operate together to bring victory for the forces of order (light). We know that the dragon is an eternal soul, returning every turning of the wheel, probably in at least 2 ages. Nothing implies that the dragon/dark one conflict has to end every age, there could be many ages where both are utterly unknown. When reading the other thread, I got to thinking about the ta'veren nature of Mat and Perrin. The more I thought about it, the less convinced I was …

Rand has, as he put it, 'poured hot oil into the White Tower which will be boiling soon'. He knew Egwene was going to gather his own armies against him, which would in effect depose him completely if he was a regular old emperor. He could have taken an hour to explain himself better in the WT and he could have gathered the monarchs in one place himself without much effort at all. They'd all have wanted to be part of that meeting. Instead, he's set himself against the WT for some reason. Why? Is he trying to strengthen his nations' ties to the WT, or to destroy them entirely? To put Egwene in a precarious position so he can make demands of her? None of the above? It ju…

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to put this, I've got no idea where else it would go... So last year I created a piece of WoT art, using only MS Paint. It's filled with Randland symbology, The Wheel, the Snake, the Tower of Ghenji, Tam's sword, Mat's spear, etc. The two orbs on the top are supposed to represent Saidin and Saidar, the weird looking spear on the right is supposed to be a Trolloc's spear (I really don't like how that part turned out. :X) Again, if this is in the wrong place, I'm really sorry. >.<

  30. Ok, something that have been pondering my mind for a while is where all those Talents, strengths, abilities and weaves have gone. When Egwene was captured by the Seanchan, she was found to be able to delve for ore, something I think she have never done since then. Maybe a result of that talent, or just because of her strength in Earth, she can make cuendillar which we did see when she tried to close off the White Tower harbor during the siege. Elayne travelled with the Athan'Miere once and there learned that the Windfinders could channel. She also learned how to manipulate the weather and how to weave the really thick weaves and make them span the sky as long as …
