So, for my English class, I need to do a Book Talk. I chose Eye Of The World. We have to describe the plot of the book as part of it, and has to be no more than 5 minutes. Problem is, there was so much in the book, and I read it a year ago (currently on book 4 "The Shadow Rising"), so I don't know what the overall plot was. I know the climax was at the Eye of the World, but could anyone give me a good, kinda short descriptive summary of book one? The wiki didn't really help much, and I never ask on forums for help, but I kinda want this to be good, maybe get some more people to read Wheel of Time. Thanks for the help in advance.

  2. I am a free man, Aes Sedai. I am no Aes Sedai meat. This, one of my favorite quotes from the entire series, is the foundation of my belief. The current third age incarnation of Aes Sedai is a terrible mockery and corruption of its second age namesake. From what we have seen, Aes Sedai in the second age were very powerful. However, they derived their power from support garnered from the populace because of the great service to society that they provided. The third age so called Aes Sedai do not derive their significant influence from the service that they provide others; rather, it is an implied threat based on a genetic predisposition that they have the abilit…

It seems to happen every time I re-listen WOT. Something jumped out again that's been bugging me. 1). In the beginning as the trio left TR Mat keep on talking about Illian (sp) and later on as well. this is a very cool foreshadowing, IMO 2). At the end, when Rand screams "than were," or such, to the VOICE IN CAPS, the stairs appear and take him to TAR (as we know now). So, and this is something that I also consider might be the case, is this a foreshadowing that the LB will take place in TAR? Kind of crazy but I think there might be something to it (between unseen eyes, dead connected to it, the "effect" if entered in flash, and so on). Who to say that it might n…

Why sheath the sword instead of, in rage, trying to go for Ishy one last time(even tho it would be in vain)? Does it matter? And how come Ishy was angry and thought of it as "escaping", and knowing it was not done yet? Does he know, or think, that LT must do something more for the Dark to make the finishing move? At this point, It seems to me that it should, for Ishy, eem like a major victory?

I'm listening to The Gathering Storm on CD and Rand is now in Bandar Eban after exiling Cads. When Nyneave is attempting to figure out how to reason with him, she muses that the only Aes Sedai he somewhat trusted was Moiraine because of what happened after they went with the Aiel. How did Nyneave actually know that happened? She wasn't there. So is this a screw up or did Nyneave hear about it and I missed that or does Nyneave know to advance the plot?

The Purpose of Min This is long. Towards the end, I’m going to start speculating madly. You’ve been warned. Reading a thread elsewhere debating whether or not Dyelin should have replaced Elayne, it got me thinking. If something had happened to Elayne, there was a backup in place to get Andor to the Last Battle. If something happened to Mat, Rand would still have Ituralde, Bashere, and probably Agelmar, as well as the Aiel clan chiefs. If Perrin or Egwene died, the good guys still had someone who can use TAR effectively – presumably Amys and Elyas would also be able to step up in some ways, Siuan and Faile and others in others. Had Rand not brought Nynaeve to the …

Evening all, first I'm sorry if this has been posted in the wrong area and feel free to move if needs be. Right, I'm a 6'2 guy, not the broadest of men, but not scrawny, kind of middle. I have long hair that I'm really not that willing to alter if possible, could you guys please help me find a decent WoT character that fits me to dress as for Halloween? Also feel free to discuss any WoT themed Halloween plans of youre own :)

I've been wondering about this for a long time, and as far as I can tell, this really isn't discussed by fans much. When Perrin meets Birgitte in the "Wolf Dream" (T'A'R) during the Shadow Rising, she reveals to him a lot about the ToG and the World of Dreams and Slayer, but she also mentions more then once that she is "bound by precepts" and that they are "stronger than law". IdealSeek gives me these quotes when I type in the word "precepts" It seems to me that this is somehow related to the both the Unseen Eyes in T'A'R and/or some sort of entity that runs T'A'R that is separate from the Dark One and the Creator entirely. To have rules and requirements, ther…

Now we know Egwene has a plan in case Rand does not listen to "reason"(her way of thinking)..as she hoped that he would not "force her hand" What exactly will/can she do? 1) Fight Rand with her army. Not sure if Elayne will try to battle the father of her children and Tear/Illian and the Aiel are linked to Rand so basically the tower AS and Bryne versus the rest. 2) Try to kidnap Rand and take him to the WT. This may be possible if she and her AS catches him unawares but considering that he is surrounded by his own Ash'aman and his AS,it is going to be difficult. 3) Kill Rand..even the most powerful channeler can be killed by a knife in the back. Anyth…

Last night, while on my first read-through of Winter's Heart i wondered why everyone believed in the Creator. There is no sign of him, as far as i know he has no priest-y followers, yet every character believes in him. Even the Athan' Miere, Aiel and the Seanchan (If i recall correctly) believe in him, while they have very little contact with the civilization of Randland (Except the Athan' Miere, they trade with Randlanders). The Dark One is known to be alive, and there's proof. (Forsaken, Nae'blis, etc) Maybe the Dark One is the Creator, but he got corrupted somehow. Most likely not.

  13. I'm about a third into Book 12: Gathering Storm and I havent been able to put it down from start to finish. Its, IMO, much better than Book 11, which Ive just finished, and seems to be one of the best. And to be honest, I'm not sure why. Oh well. What do you guys think? And Im not comparing these books on their writing styles by any means. In fact Im totally taking that OUT of the equation. I'm just going solely on whats actually happening in the story. Maybe part of it is because the whole rescuing Faile thing is over, which SUCKED. But things finally seem to be drawing together. Papa Like.

A thought occurred to me yesterday (and forgive me if it has been brought up) but Mat's luck seems to have gotten better after he lost his dice. Everyone is probably aware of the dice Ter'angreal that the black ajah "stole", what if Lanfear slipped that into his possessions instead and those were the dice that he lost in the land of the finn's? They aren't suppose to increase luck specifically, I believe they are described as being able to "alter or suspend chance" which is not the same as increasing luck. This whole time he could have actually had them acting as a yolk of sorts, restraining his luck and forcing it to get stronger to be able to keep himself in line with w…

So, Alanna disappears from Tear right before Rand returns after becoming "anointed in light" (Nyneave can see a layer of light protecting him from the madness, and Rand can identify DF's by looking in his eyes, plus, DF's can't bear to see him channeling anymore as seen in Maradon). This falls right into the timeline of the cleansing of the White Tower, when a lot of Black sisters who were abroad vanished. Other supporting evidence: Egwene was suspicious of her when testing for the accepted, albeit without specific reason She was present with Verin (who was black even though reluctantly) in the Two Rivers Verin tells Perrin not to trust Alanna Loyal said Ala…

I can't figure out why it's such a big deal to all the Aes Sedai that Asha'man bonded Aes Sedai. It's not much different from Aes Sedai bonding Warders. I figured everyone was used to change considering the Last Battle is approaching. I just can't figure out why it's such a big deal.

After many years, I finally made the connection between the title of this classic and one other particular thing. I was wondering if it's title is a coincidence, or if Thomas Hardy retroactively stole RJ's words. Anyone know if there's any relation at all? Did RJ just like it, or is there a connection between the book and the city? It's been sitting on my stand for a long time, but I can't bear to start reading, so I don't know.

So, I was thinking about Verin's letters today. Rand receives one of her letters just before his meeting with Egwene. Egwene arrives, and then Rand tells her that he plans to move in thirty days. We know Verin had no small insight as to the plans of the Shadow, due to her warning to Mat about the strike on Caemlyn. I think that Verin provided Rand with the Shadow's timetable. Rand's actions with regards to timing are entirely deliberate. He would have realized that the letter being delivered just before the meeting was important, that the Pattern wanted him to have it. Either he read it while waiting for Egwene to arrive, or he may know a weave that allows him to tra…

Whenever I revisit this series I'm amazed at the amount of people/places/topics/conflicts/histories etc. Can BS actually wrap up this series{provide a decent amount of detail about a host of topics}? From what I understand RJ had the end pretty much outlined already. Still,I don't envy BS one bit. This ramble was brought on by this: Shara: A mysterious land to the east of the Aiel Waste which is the source of silk and ivory, among other trade goods. The land is protected both by inhospitable natural features and by man-made walls. Little is known about Shara, as the people of that land work to keep their culture secret. The Sharans deny that the Trolloc Wars touche…

I'm new to this site and havn't been around any WoT forums in years so i'm not sure if this has been discussed. This is my incomplete thought has been rattling around in my head for awhile now. Hopefully someone can help flesh it out for me (don't have all the books anymore) or prove me wrong so i can get it out of me head! :P I've always wondered about the reason that Moiraine HAS to be at the last battle. It stands to reason that she's going to do something BIG. Min had a viewing of a black hand holding calandor (or something like that). Which to me suggests that a dark friend is going to control it. Now, ever since we found out that Calandor needs 2 women link…

I haven't read all the post but i was wondering something. If Mat hasn't died yet, he is still bound. And when he does die he will be unbound. People can be bound to the horn, as AH tells Hurin. So if Mat dies, he could be bound to the horn, and then couldn't someone yank him out of TaR like birgette was? And now that birgette has been out for a while now she is starting to loose some of her old memories. so if mat gets pulled out, couldn't he then start to loose the memories that the finn gave him, so that after the last battle he wouldn't have to keep remembering all the lives that are in his head? Also if he dies and is unbound to it maybe Oliver who is alway…

Channelers of opposite genders cannot see each others weaves. So how do they cut them in order to be able to place a shield around the other? Has there been any male channeler vs female channeler battles in the series? The only times I can recall off the top of my head is Rand & co. vs Lanfear in book 5. I don't recall anything of the battle itself. Another was Rand getting shielded by the 13 Aes Sedai in book 6. However, in that scene there was no cutting of weaves involved, as Rand was not even holding the one power when he got shielded. (not that it would have helped, as he was facing 13 women who were linked).

There is a theme that is brought up every once in a while of how a person is not always lost if they join the shadow and that they can be saved if they repent... Verin is a great example of this. I have a theory that this theme will play a role in the Last Battle. I get the feeling that Cyndane will somehow want to repent for her sins and that Rand will help her get free of Moridin.

Something curious that I came across during my reread is that when Moiraine and company arrive in Caemlyn and meet Loial, the three tales of the DO blinding the Eye of the World come to light. The last telling is of the dream that Rand, Matt, and Perrin shared. Perrin offers one of the many names that Ishy as Ba'alzamon offered to them as men that the Aes Sedai used (False Dragons) Darksbane, Amalason, all of them are named except Rand keeps Logain's name from being said aloud. The question is asked as to what/who those men were after the names come out, and Loial says, "They are all Taveren" which Moiraine takes to mean Rand, Matt, and Perrin. Was that not in fact an…

  30. So it seems that the WoT world is just a past (or future) version of our world, and that all the main characters are Legends in our world. So who is Rand? His names doesn't draw any immediate paralles for me, like Perrin, and he doesn't strongly resemble anyone other than maybe Tyr. Any thoughts?
