Why does Ishamael break free, cause a trolloc war, corrupt some Seanchen prophecy, wreak some havoc here and there, then get sealed away again? Did someone seal him back up again? How did he break free in the first place? And if he broke free because the puny man-channeler's seal's were weak, why didn't more break free, and how in the heck did he get sealed back up again if that was the case? The seals on the Dark One's prison seem like a "once you're free, you're always free" kind of thing... Maybe I'm thinking too deeply about it, maybe it's just the author going "oh that was Ishamael" and not putting more thought into it? Am I the only one who thinks the …

First of all, just to tease folk who havent read ToM yet, i'm gonna include it in my list but not say WHY it's got that place in the list. That would just be spoilerish, douchy and probably get me kicked off the bords. Here we go... 1. The Fires of Heaven 2. The Shadow Rising 3. The Great Hunt 4. The Eye of the World 5. Towers of Midnight 6. The Dragon Reborn 7. The Gathering Storm 8. Lord Of Chaos 9. Knife of Dreams 10.A crown of Swords 11.The Path of Daggers 12.Winters Heart 13.Crossroads of Twilight Fires of heaven and Shadow Risising have equal footing in my eyes, I simply love the insight those two books give us into Aiel ways. They contain…

If you want to read up on my notes since the beginning, start here: http://forums.dragonmount.com/index.php/topic,60273.0.html Chapter 11 - Interesting to note that when Rand wordlessly shouted at Bela to run, she ran. Even though she could not see him... Rand was also able to talk to a trolloc, something else which was supposedly surprising. No prediction on this, just a mental note. - Bela is the least tired of all the horses? I wonder if Tam has something to do with that... - Rand has a reflex to draw the sword ... interesting. - A Biteme? ... mosquito? - Summon fog! - Wow, Lan and Moiraine are loaded. Apparently the silver coins given to the childr…

Why do we think that if the Seanchan took over the world, the spark would die out? Because they aren't allowed to breed, and therefore the spark would die out? Who said the spark had anything to do with genetics? They have controlled the continent of Seanchan for the better part of 1000 years and STILL have damane. And still catch them with regularity if Tuon is skilled at and enjoys breaking new damane. There is also the White Tower for the past 3000 years, taking women away to live in the white tower and hardly ever have kids, if ever. Wasn't Elayne pregnant like the first time in 100 years that an Aes Sedai was pregnant? Also the Oath Rod really shorte…

Hello, I am reading the series again. I have some questions: 1 Why Fain stole the Horn and Dagger? I mean was he under Ishamael's orders to draw Rand and Mat to Falme so Ishamael could confront and convert them? Or was that Mordeth (not Fain) and HE stole the horn and dagger to hurt Mat and Rand independently from the DO? We know that Ingtar is a darkfriend and he rescued Fain. This implies that Fain was controlled by the DO at that time. 2 Why Ingtar came with Rand to rescue the horn? Did he change his mind about being a darkfriend right after the gray man attack to join the rescue party? Or did he turn the light only after seeing the portal stones? If so the…

I'm sure this has come up many times, but I can't find a thread on it (the search tool isn't working currently?). I know Shara probably isn't important enough to be part of the plot all the time, but its mentioned so often that I wonder why the even bother. I guess it just confirms that there is stuff on the other side of the Aiel Waste. I want a full size map of the world, or at least one that includes the Sea Folk isles, some of Shara, and Seandar. It seems silly that we've been using the same map since the beginning of the series so long ago. The way the map is drawn, it seems that it would be impossible for the "known world" to anymore than half of the actual …

Hey people! I'm sorry to disturb your fine morning/noon/afternoon/evening... but I was wondering if perhaps you could lend me a hand with your vast information about WoT. I tried interrogating Kivam but he was resisting me and he sent me here. He said to specifically seek out Luckers because apparently he's so much of a WoT savvy that it borderlines with really scary shit >.> Anyhow! I'm sort of in charge of the Children of the Light (CotL) RP group here on DM. And when I say sort of, I mean that I am. lol And I've been doing some research about them because I'd like to have a nice sum up about them in general as a group, about the three factions within it, abou…

I just finished reading ToM and it really reinforced feelings I develop whilst reading TGS. I hope I'm not speaking sacrilege here, but does anyone agree with me that Sanderson has done a great job (perhaps better than RJ) of developing characters? I won't go into specific detail as I don't want to risk spoilers, but I don't think it's be giving too much away to say that the job he's done with Mat has been brilliant. Whereas before we were lead to believe he was this cheeky rogue, more through implication and inference, Sanderson has given him some great action and dialogue to really bring him to life. I felt the last two RJ books - especially Crossroads - were re…

couldn't Rand use the true power in its place? it seems to operate on the same patterns as the source he uses normally, and with LT's comment that the touching ofte dark one w/ the power was the reason it was tainted, the true power could be turned against him in that fashion. Just a thought.

Curiously, it's implied that had Rand not become cool it would have been better for the Dark One to win. Makes them abandoning the Borderlands make sense.

The Wheel of Time turns, and books are always being reprinted in new editions. For the last twenty years, we've essentially had the same format for the most part in the printing of Wheel of Time hardcovers, with Sweet covers. As the series is ongoing, this is a good thing - it'd suck pretty bad to have a variety of different cover styles on the bookshelf. However, there will come a time when the series is finished, all the books have been released, and it's time to make Tor more money through reprinting hardcovers. The Lord of the Rings has had a lot of high quality reprints, and the Wheel of Time deserves similar. Personally, what I'd like would be an oversize forma…

The aiel are one group that have always confused me. Would someone please enlighten me as to the make up of the Aiel. Here is what I think I know: 1) The Aiel are divided up into many different clans and among those clans are the Goshen and the Shaido. 2) Each clan is further divided into several sub-groups called Septs. 3) Septs can be further divided into Societies 4) There are two ocupations for Aiel, Madiens of the Spear and Wise Ones, one must be a Madien before becoming an Wise One. Members of both are women. I have no idea what the men do. 5) The Wise Ones appear to be the ruling class of the Aiel. 6) Aiel referr to the Dragon as the Caracan. 7) Most …

i just realised it. we see alot of talk about food spoiling all over the world, whenever the Last Battle is mentioned, the food spoilage is always on the top of the list of signs. except for Perrin and Mat, apart from a few bugs here and there they are generally free from this pest. is it they're ta'veren nature or something else that causes it. will it have any large effects later on?

I've tried to understand this for a while but the more I think about it, the more I can't understand it. I just began a re-read of WoT and have taken in details of Nynaeve's experiences, as well as Egwene's first tries with the Power. At first everything seems to make sense as far as Moiraine explaining how the Power works. However, why is it there is no mention of the wonderful feeling of saidar? Why can't Nynaeve or Egwene from their first experiences sense or feel this? How they channel at all without seeing the weaves or feeling saidar? It seriously makes no sense! Unless I'm missing something... so... how does it make sense to anyone else?

Ever have one of those moments that you have read about in 'The Wheel of Time'. I have. Before i went off to University i was Head of Quality Control and Packing. But then i went away and when i came back for holidays, my section had been dissolved and i was just an odinary worker. It was exactly as i imagined Siuan and Leane felt after being stilled and then healed by Nynaeve. They were so use to being where they were, it felt weird to not be how you were before hand.

I read the Gathering Storm about a year ago, and just today I began reading the prologue of Towers of Midnight. In both books, I have noticed something that annoys me and pulls me out of the story, namely the frequent use of contractions ending in apostrophe-"d". Some examples would be "he'd" (he had or he would), "she'd" (she had or she would), and "they'd" (they had or they would). Please don't misunderstand; I have no problem with prose that uses contractions. Many contractions, such as "can't," "don't," "didn't," and "it's," are widely used in both fiction and non-fiction, and in my opinion they do not make the text sound overly informal. However, I canno…

Doing a reread of EotW at the moment and I have to say, it's put me off Moiraine quite a bit and I'm also a bit...disappointed with the way she is written, if that's the right way to phrase it. So far there's two things that are really bothering me and seem off character to me. Firstly, after Wintersnight and the trollocs and everything, she doesn't go find Rand. For all she knew it could have been Rand wounded with the trolloc blade and slowly dying, and he had the coin so she would have been able to find him relatively easily, yet she stayed in the village. I understand she would have been exhausted after the fight and might have been worried about more trollocs and of …

Now that I am done with ToM and the long wait starts for aMoL I am interested in reading some of Brandon's other stuff. I am just curious if there is any preferred order to his books? Elantris, Warbreaker, or should I just start with the Mistborn series?

We must wander the waters until the Coramoor returns, and serve him at his coming. He shall wield the One Power, and hold the Sword That Cannot Be Touched. The Aiel shall come over the Dragonwall to his call, the Stone of Tear shall fall, and war shall break over the nations of the land. Those who once ruled shall return, and shall be driven back for the first time. The White Tower shall be broken in his name, and Aes Sedai shall kneel to wash his feet and dry them with their hair. He shall bring us to glory and all the seas of the world shall be ours. "Those who once ruled shall return, and shall be driven back for the first time." This line refers to the…

This is my first post here. I've done a search here and on google trying to see if anyone has addressed my question to my satisfaction, but they have not. I have read 1.5 books of the series. I had known of it for some time and when I got snowed in at an airport last Christmas I picked up The Gathering Storm. I got halfway though, and recently I read Eye of the World. The central thing that I do not understand is why the Dark One wants Rand to live. That the Dark One wants to turn Rand to the dark side is not an answer. Rand has been built up as the only one who can stop the Dark One when the seals to his prison inevitably fail. Given this, killing Rand, whic…

Greetings Dragonmouties, Lately I've been thinking about balefire and it's uses, whether it is negative to the pattern or a necessary evil. So let me start with my previous knowledge of balefire. I've always thought that Rand was BA using balefire and when Aes Sedai, such as Cadsuane, would tell him not to use it I would grow angry with them. There's even a good scene in ToM involving one of my favorite female characters and balefire that I thought was pretty cool, but enough of that because I do not want to spoil here that's not what this thread is about. So, who do our heroes use balefire on? Seems like it's just on shadowspawn/forsaken. Why do they use it, wel…

So, I have been wondering for a while now. What is the exact nature of the Dark One's prison. I've seen some who view the Pattern its self as the Prison for example. Something I have recently been considering is the possibility of the Prison being a vacuole? Doubt it, though I'll give it more thought. So what are your views on the Dark One's Prison?

Seriously, even since I first started reading WoT I just don't understand the visuals of how weaves looks like. "Just take the fire and mix it with earth, and some air and you have your breakfast." I don't get it; do the channelers see the weaves as fire is a burning flame, and air which isn't visible because air is just not visible. Earth is mud or stones? And put it together and it becomes a weave. Or Nynaeve healing-shit, with spirits and air. I don't see how they see it. Would someone help me imagine this correctly? :)
