Hi, I'm a new first time reader of WOT. Finished book one and am 5 chapters into book two. I'm trying to keep track of all the players and who is on whom's side. One thing that I don't understand is where the white cloaks get their authority from. Are they sanctioned by a king/queen? Are they self appointed police of the world and simply bullies that go around en masse (might makes right)? Are they law? And the Aes Sedai, where do they get their authority? It seems like some people think them good and others evil. It seems like the queen respected their them? Do they have any official authority in the kingdom/world? Or are they they a religion that some l…

I've been rereading the series of late and was surprised when I noticed an odd detail. From the beginning it was made clear that ravens, rats and all other creatures that feed on death can be used as spies for the dark one. But many times throughout the series characters see or interact with vultures and do nothing, but will set bounties on and kill ravens or rats on sight. Does anyone know if Jordan ever addressed this? Or is it just a funny little oversight? Because in my opinion vultures are known for feeding on the dead even more than ravens or rats, the other two will eat anything they can scavenge, but as far as I know vultures hunt for dead meat.

  3. Obviously this is a book and there are no real pictures to be had, but im sure each of us has formulated some mental pictures of all the characters in the book. So this begs the question, of all the females in WOT who is the hottest in your head. For me The mental Hottie award goes to Faile. Dunno why even though Lanfear is described to be the hotty of all hotties i have faile edging her out in hottiness, even if i dont particularly like the character.. wierd aint it. I will say in my head Aviendha is a close second in terms of sheer hotness. however i like her character alot more.

  5. I am just curious about this. Everyone who has read the series notices just how standalone-ish the first three books feel up to a point. I've read both that the original deal was for 6 books from the get go, but I've also heard that the book deal was actually only for 3 books and that Jordan would have ended it with the Dragon Reborn if the series wasn't popular enough to get more books. What makes me ask is that I am currently reading the Dragon Reborn and for the first time it has really hit me just how ambiguous the references to future events are in tEotW and TGH. While right from the beginning TDR seems to be throwing out portents waaaay down the line whenever i…

So, I just thought about the name Emond's field, and quickly realized that it's an simple anagram of Demon. This makes me pretty mad, why would he insinuate that the starting village of the heroes would have something to do about Demons? I'm hoping for some clarification, but my respect for the author is now withering. ?

Is there licensed WoT merchandise? In particular, I seem to remember a few years ago there was an official or licensed Wheel of Time belt buckle that I saw around. Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, not sure where else would be a good spot.

I'm sure this has been discussed at some point, but I don't remember seeing it. What/who is the Dark One? We hear about The Creator, but never actually see any sign of him, and our in our interactions with DO, he doesn't seem to a "supernatural" being, being ignorant of many things and events. Even at the end of the series when Rand confronts him, he seems very powerless outside what his "people" do.

  10. I was sort of away from WOT for a long time but with the series coming I am re-reading it for maybe the 6th time I guess, though I have only read the BS books once and will likely not read them again. That said, my biggest question that has always bothered me is this: How in the light did Moiraine know specifically that Sammael was in Illian and Be'Lal was in Tear? I asked Jordan this personally once and after Harriet said it was a good question and Jordan said it was one of the best questions he gets asked he said "You have to understand that Moiraine did not just go sit under a tree. She was on a quest. How she kne…

  11. Has anybody else commented on this? That in their final attack on Emond's field, the Trollocs charge, shouting ISAM! (ISAM is an IBM technical term for data file access, "Indexed Sequential Access Methods".) I'm wondering if it's an in-joke of some sort, or perhaps Robert Jordan had a bad experience with an obnoxious IBM staffer or salesman while in service in Vietnam, and decided to make a joke of it? Did he ever explain this?

  12. Started by Xarra,

Sorry if I'm being dim, but I've seen it mentioned once or twice, but never any actual explaination - does it mean Faile's in line for the throne of Saldaea or something? (I'd assume she is as she's Tenobia's cousin...) Or is it something to do with Malkier?

Back in 2012 TOR created a series of really cool wallpapers for each of the books leading up to AMOL to promote its release. These featured new artwork and looked absolutely great, and today I got to reviewing my collection only to learn that they never did one for A Memory of Light! Caveat there, technically they did two wallpapers but neither was in the same style as those before it. That fact blew my mind, but I dug around everywhere and could not find it whatsoever. So... I made it. My rendition isn't perfect, for a couple of reasons. First, it doesn't have alternate cover art, I used the one from the books and credit Michael Whelan (though if I need to take thi…

I've just watched again the 1980s NZ film The Quiet Earth starring a cast of three including Bruno Lawrence in the lead role as a scientist partially responsible for setting up what is intended to be a world-wide standing flow network but instead has a negative effect on the local forms of universal constants within a radius of several light minutes at the very least. And it's the standing flow thing that's got me wondering, was this a film that Robert Jordan ever watched? Did he use it as an inspiration for his own Age of Legends standing flows?

So I have been bouncing around ideas in my head to now have a crossover fanfiction story between Wheel of Time and some other universe. Ultimately I chose Mass Effect because the universe allowed me to fit things into its rich lore here like a bad puzzle, I had to squeeze them in there, but it could work. Also, they are among my favorite book and video games respectively. I have made a timeline of sorts of what I think happened after the Last Battle up to what would be the First Contact. This will be an alternate Mass Effect Universe, as this new humanity will influence it greatly. Please take a look and tell me what you think, but I have three points before really delvin…

Hello all! I picked up the Eye of the World in 90 or 91 and the series is still one of my top 3 series I've ever read. I just started another re-read to be up to date when the show drops. I have my copy from the 90's, but I also checked out the e-book from my library and what to my wondering eyes appeared but a WHOLE NEW CHAPTER from Egwene's POV. My question is how many of these "new" pieces have been added, when and in what versions, and by whom were they written? Brandon or Jordan? I'm really enjoying the addition and don't want to miss out by reading my originals paperbacks, most are the first releases bought as they came out. Thanks to all in advance!

I noticed in The Dragon Reborn, a sea folk woman uses the phrase: All will be well, all will be well, all manner of things will be well. However, later in the book the exact phrase is used by an Aiel woman roughly 3000 yrs earlier. That’s a mistake. Identical phase being used by a different group 3000 yrs later? also in book 6, two references to cloudberries, not sure they are ever referenced to again.

  21. The Lord of Chaos epilogue shows Moghedien escaping and Egwene finding out about it, but in Crown of Swords Moghedien is still there and no escape is ever mentioned. Edit: I also might've missed it but another epilogue shows Asmodean being killed but the next book never seems to mention or acknowledge it in any way

  22. Nuff said. I like Avi, Mat, Thom, Taim (yes), Moridin, Gaul, Damer, Narishma, and Sulin. not nec in that order, but those are characters I think need more air time. Anyone else agree with me? Of course I am assuming we all push the like button for Rand.

  23. Hello Everyone, Just finished #7 this morning and overall, I'm quite pleased with this installment. It was engaging throughout, reading through it in about 6 days. It didn't have the same jaw-dropping moments that were in Lord of Chaos, but it did feel like the "fluff" present in LoC was not in ACoS (looking at you circus chapters). Elayne and Nyn continue to annoy, but at least Elayne took control of the Ebou Dar "Circle" and the Aes Sedai in the palace. Mat had a scary moment with a new enemy, the gholam. Seems like these creatures are going to claim some important lives before they're overcome. It took the entire book but the Ebou Dari gang did finall…

I recently read Leigh Butlers’ The Wheel of Time Reread - COT and it hit me: what the hell is point of Halima/Aran’gar in story? S/he doesn’t actually do anything of consequence. Giving Egwene headaches and interfering with her dreams, bossing Delana, and occasionally beating Sheriam is all well and fine but it’s importance to plot is minimal. Might as well not being there at all. Osan’gar purpose was to teach Flinn advanced Healing, he did it, and in next book we see him expose himself and book after - his sole (pardon second) appearance ends with him burned along with hilltop he was on. Ok,I get that. What I don’t understand is, and I will repeat myself: what the he…

  27. This is not fan casting, which is why I wanted to put this thread in the book section. I can't get into why Min is my favorite character right now but she is, even though a lot of what I love about her might be fan fiction I've written in my head. And I wanted to talk to everyone, especially the ladies on here, and get their thoughts on a possible body image crisis Min Farshaw might have had that kind of got ignored. Book 6 & 7 is when Min finally get's to be with Rand, and even though she's still wearing coats and britches instead of dresses she makes an effort to make her attire more feminine and appealing to Rand, even though she struggles with the idea…

Does anyone else find perrin extremely annoying in the Ebooks, michael kramer when impersonating perrin slows his voice down and makes him sound really slow and dim witted, then again i dont like the character in general he spends the whole first half of the series whingeing that Faile doesnt love him or is angry at him and every time it comes to his perspective he just talks about his beard 3 to 4 times. The only book ive found him tolerable is TOM and TGS.

Its the red cover promo of part one The Eye Of The World. I can't find it anywhere on the internet I've searched everywhere only finding it in one place online http://encyclopaedia-wot.org/main/biblio/collect.html It mentions it's one of the rarest jordan collectables. But after searching all auction sites online Ive had no luck in finding it. Any other information anyone can provide would be very helpful.

  30. In book six when the tower Aes Sedai take Rand, they shield him and take him to the house they have been staying in. Rand talks about 6 soft points. At Dumai's Wells there is a point where some of the six points become hard (from knotting). I have heard this part many times (audio books) and even read it several times and it never dawned on me until today. How come their were six points and how come some got knotted. I reason away the six soft points with an explanation of the one power flowing in from 6 people, but then some of them get knotted (tied off) as women leave the circle. This part does not make sense to me. As it is always a circle of Aes Sedai that is …
