But the more I think about this the more I feel full of wonderment. I think it's really interesting how RJ wove elements of our world into the books. That's probably what makes them so believable and seemingly realistic. We can recognize characters in people we know personally or people we have knowledge of. We all know someone like Nynaeve, whose short temper gets in the way of her long-term goals, but who continually mothers people her age. And we recognize Perrin and Master Luhhan, when we think of an older brother, father, uncle or grandfather whose physical strength and quiet demeanor belies his soft heart and shrewd mind. Tam Al'Thor bears a striking resemblanc…

One of the most unrealistic things about the series, and one of the most overlooked, is the sheer ease with which blademasters and even skilled human swordsmen dispose of Trollocs. On reflection, I think this is nonsense. No matter how good you are with a sword, you will die 1vs1 against a Trolloc unless you have the Dark One's own luck. Consider that: 1) They are tall (head and shoulders even above Rand, one of the tallest non-Aeil humans around) and extremely powerful, being a fusion of humans and beasts like bears and bulls. From their descriptions, they should be strong enough to cripple a human body even with an unarmed physical blow. They can also run as f…

  3. I've been rereading the series and was curious about Rand's battles with Ishy in EotW and TGH. I don't really understand a lot about the battles and what is actually taking place. In TGH it appears that Rand kills Ishy. However, Ishy is show early in The Dragon Reborn in the dream world with a wounded chest. Did he have a lingering wound? It seems like to live he would have needed healing. If that was the case, why would he still have a chest wound? In EotW all Rand seems to do is sever the cord to the Dark One. If I'm correct in this, that cord protects him from the Taint. Does that mean in books 2 and 3 that Ishy is channeling a tainted Saidin? I also don't un…

Good day all, I'm a big fan of the WoT and always check the forum but now decided to join in an active discussion(s). Anyway, away with a quick introduction and to my point. Here is my question (and I imagine someone already addressed it, but nonetheless here it comes ;D), if balefire destroys the pattern and Lanfear is the one who freed the DO in the first place, can't it be assumed that one of the ways to win the LB is to use a lot of balefire to burn her out of the pattern. It would fit with Rand's unacceptability to kill women (to kill Lanfear would be very hard for him to accept, afterall he could have done it already), plus what if a choice presents itsel…

Do we have any textual evidence as to what all of the characters asked the Eelfinn Aelfinn for? (Eelfinn are foxes right? Can never remember...) Anywho, Rand, Moiraine, and Mat we know went into the three questions, three answers one (snakes). Mat's we know, obviously...do we have any info on the others? My guesses are: Rand 1. How can Saidin be cleansed? 2. How can I prevent a war? 3. ? Possibly, should I go back to the Two Rivers? (not going seemed to be his own idea, but I couldn't think of a third) Moiraine 1. What should I do to accomplish my goals? 2. How can I force the Dragon Reborn to move? 3. Again, can't really think of …

  7. Just finished LOC on my current re-read and I was struck with a question I never had before, how did Taim know how to find Rand at Dumai's Wells? Did he follow the Aes Sedai from Camelyn (Verin, Alanna, and Co.), or was he sent by his forsaken bosses?

do you think that Rand will continue to be with all three women or do you think that something will happen to make them no longer be together even though the are bonded to him?

So I'm on my 2nd read-through, and I came across this chapter in which Aviendha is worried about not being able to meet her toh. She states that she has toh toward Elayne (from sleeping with Rand), and she has toh toward Rand (presumably because she believes he stopped Lanfear from killing her). The book goes on to say, "Killing Rand al'Thor would meet on toh, killing herself the second." I can see how killing herself could be construed as making up for failing in her promise to Elayne (she later offers to let Elayne kill her herself), but I don't see how killing Rand would meet her toh toward him. I believe it's possible that killing Rand would meet her toh t…

Bonds, bonds, everywhere a bond . . . . I’m all into foreshadowing, and I’m curious about the bonds in WoT series and now those may give us some hints about what might happen in the next three books. Warder Bonds. From Wikipedia: Having warders is something new to this age and is not something the Forsaken are very familiar with. Warders (until recently) have always been men. My take on Warders is that they are extremely dedicated to their ASs. I’m not sure that this comes just from their training or if there’s something in the bond itself that does this. There are hints that it does in the later books, though Rand, who was forcibly bonded by Alan…

Do you believe that there will be anything different about Moiraine when she comes back? Lanfear came back with a new body and weaker in the power (although i'm not sure if that wasn't her being resurrected by the DO and not her escaping) Will Moiraine be stronger in the OP? weaker? Will she have asked for 3 gifts? I've wondered if she has some awareness of events in the world while she is there. Its going to take her awhile to get up to speed with all that has happened since she has been gone.

  14. After reading Chapter 1, I could not tell whether it was Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson who wrote it, which I think is a good thing. I would have liked for the chapter to have had a big reveal, but I can't have everything. It was nice to know that Rand really suspects that Graendal is in Arad Doman. I liked the setup for a potential reveal from Lew Therin down the road on the Strike at Shayol Ghul. What are everyone else's impressions?

Hi all! I just started rereading the WOT books about a month and a half ago and I'm currently about 1/3rd of the way through Lord of Chaos. I made it a goal to figure out Asmodean's murder this time around and here's what I've come up with. Thought I'd bounce it off an acive community like yourselves: For those that need to be reminded of the things for or against most characters, I suggest you go here to see some background info: http://linuxmafia.com/jordan/1_dark/1.1_forsaken1/1.1.6_asmo.html So! Here's my theory. Too many people disregard Moghedien, when she is, in fact, one of the Fires of Heaven's main villains. Moghedien - In Fires of Heaven she…

This may have been answered at some point but if it was, I missed it.I had thought that perhaps they were just storage containers, like we might put something into a vacuum sealed bag. But then a gholem emerged from one of them. And all of those weird servants whose name escapes me now come out of another.Thing that someone obviously thought could come in handy at some point in the future. I ask because I always assumed that it was the forsaken but I was thinking about it the other and a question came into my head. Why? As we learn in the strike at shyol gaul they , at the time the bore was sealed, had no reason to believe that they were going to be sealed up for …

Many have debated about this viewing. Before telling who might fulfill it, I shall examine it. The full viewing is as follows:: "Rand would almost certainly fail without a woman who was dead and gone." "without" part; the following phrases might fit: -"without the guidance of" -"without the advice of" -"without the teaching of" -"without being taught by" -"without the presence of" -"without the companionship of" -"without the love of" -"without being married to" -"without being bonded to" -"without fathering the children of" And perhaps many more phrases might also fit. "fail" part; these meanings might be possible: -die -face def…

One of the biggest reasons I can't wait to read The Gathering Storms is for Mat, Thom, and whoever, to go to the Tower of Ghenjei and rescue Moiraine. I've been waiting for that moment to come for 6 books now, ever since she disappeared, so it better happen in this book. I do not want to wait another whole year for Tower of Midnight (scary name: Ghenjei is a tower) to come out. We have been deprived of her awesomeness for too long. Discounting Mat she is my favorite character (and maybe even counting him too). Besides basically, her, Siuan, (I like Leane too I suppose) and Cadsuane (and I don't like Cadsuane) all of the Aes Sedai are pretty ignorant and annoying (Egwene…

  21. Did the Dark One know, and call the 13 most powerful Forsaken in, so that they would be sealed with him, so that he could try again in a few thousand years? It seems that the DO treats time as a disposable commodity. If his ultimate goal is to turn the Dragon willingly to his side, then, knowing that Lews Therin wasn't going to turn, it would make sense to go ahead and hit the ol' reset button and try again later. Having some powerful helpers would definitely make things easier, so you might as well bring them along. If the DO is the ultimate control freak, then it seems that before remaking the world in his image (if that's even really his goal), he would wan…

  22. I was just re-reading The Shadow Rising and Lanfear says this to Rand in the Stone if Tear. "There are only two more powerful that a man can use. One at least, I know, still exists. No, Lews Therin. I will not trust you yet with that." We know the Choedan Kal is one of them what is the other and have we seen it yet?

  23. It seems like a single turning of the Wheel contains both a Dragon (Lews Therin) and a Dragon Reborn (Rand). Rand cannot be Lews Therin in a second turning of the Wheel simply because they live at completely different times. Lews Therin lived during the Age of Legends before the Dark One was ever freed. He fought a war against the Shadow and sealed the Bore, resulting in the Taint. Rand however, lives at a very different time. He is likely destined to completely reseal the DO's prison and he also has cleaned Saidin. It's likely that the prison Lew Therin believed to be made by the creator was actually made by the Dragon Reborn. I find this interesting because it lend…

  26. One (among other) thought ocurred to me as I listened to Winter's Heart. Why are the Good Guys less than incompetent when attacking Forsaken/anyone who can use the Power? Why do they always use weaves that has to hit directly? Why don't they rip the ground apart around them and make rocks fly and bash the bad guy's brains in?? And.. oh lord... They can't be that ignorant... only Elsa? uses her brains a little when she roasts O'sangar and that hill he hid on. ??? ::) What are your thought on Stupidity when attacking Forsaken with the Power?

Something that struck me as I'm doing my reread of the later books in the series, is that Jordan goes to great lengths to keep his main characters humble (or at least TOO prideful), with the exception of Rand. Case in point: Nynaeve. All through the earlier books, we hear about her potential, about how she's the strongest channeler in a thousand years. We see her match one of the weaker Forsaken. She is Bad Ass. We discover that the Aes Sedai hierarchy is based on strength, which means nearly every sister must defer to her. The only people she MUST defer to are Egwene, her lawful Amyrlin, and the Head of the Yellow Ajah. She also defers to Rand in a way, but everyon…

Dont know if this as been discussed before but I was thinking about a comment Mat made at the end of KOD about maybe wearing armor. Do you think he will wear some? If so, what type? I would love to see them finding a stasis box with AOL armor in it, I know thats a pipe dream but I think it would be awesome.
