I've been reading Michael (and Jeff) Shaara. I can't help but notice a similarity with the prose style RJ used for WOT; also in scene settings, choice of details, characterizations, dialogue etc, Does anyone know if RJ was a Sharaa fan?

This thread is to speculate what roles each current Ajah would have after Tarmon Gaidon. my guesses:: Red; not entirely sure, but I imagine their new role would involve an agreement with male channelers. like Pevara & Androl. some of the others I imagine would at times assist the Aiel. Gray with mediating, Green with battles, Yellow with Healing, Brown with knowledge. Yellow Ajah I imagine would also help with the offspring of various channelers; since illness and physical hurt would be common among kids. Brown Ajah I imagine would also work at various libraries; and still at the White Tower's. White Ajah I imagine would still deal with logic. Blue; not ent…

Now that the series is over and events have played out as far as we will see them, it is a good time to look at the Seanchan dynasty. Looking at the history of the Seanchan and how they have progressed to the Last Battle, how effective was Ishamael's corruption, did it work as intended, or did the Light turn it into an asset? Will Ishamael's influence be felt long into the 4th Age, or has Rand sown the seed of healing? Will Mat, Tuon and Min tend to the seed that Rand has planted? How will Egwene's revelations - considering her heroic death, she may be viewed as a saviour, even by the Seanchan, when they learn of what she did (that is if anyone actually comp…

I'm wondering if anyone knows if Tor plans on doing something where you can pre-order the Companion book and get something with it, or maybe just pre-order off of Amazon if it's possible? I like ordering from Amazon but if there is something special going on, I don't want to miss it.

For decades we've known that Robert Jordan wrote the final scene when he started working on The Eye of the World, but since the series had changed totally: Sanderson had to rewrite the whole thing. First he denied it, then he admitted a few injections, then came the small changes etc. (A Dance with Dragons 1510 manuscript pages 415k, A Storm of Swords 1521 pages in manuscript, 424k) 15k text = first chapter of TSR

This is my first thread. So be gentle What stuck out me about Randland almost from the beginning of TEOTW was the attention given to foodstuff and beverages of the setting , which quickly takes on a European cast before the discovery of the new world. There is no mention of tomatoes, potatoes, corn (maize), chocolate, peanuts, turkeys or anything else from the New World in the daily diet. The exception is tobacco which is I think is a nod to JRR Tolkien and the Shire. Wheat, barley, and oats are the staples of the diet. The Seanchan have coffee, but they are not native to the Westlands. Also not used in the Westlands are Old World foods and crops not…

In the wheel of time companion preview about the oath rod it brought up an interesting point. How Mesaana and possbily some of the BA evaded the reoathing when they swore they weren't a DF. Egwene and others thought it might of been something such as a weave that makes it sound like you are saying something you aren't. When reading the preview it may of been something as simply as Mesaana not believing she is a DF. After all she considers herself a choosen not some lowly darkfriend, while a cunning BA could evade it by not thinking of herself as a DF but a black ajah or even still an Aes Sedai. Also shows the oaths are more for publicity then actually being really us…

So I've never seen this question answered or asked, and it's bothered me for a while. It's been said that linking isn't the same as adding two power levels, and the theory stands that women have 21 levels of power, with men going a few beyond that. So that being said, how is it that 13 of the weakest channelers could shield and hold the strongest man (Or woman)? and does that count for a channeler with an angreal or sa'angreal? I mean 13 level 2 channelers (since mograse at level 1 cannot always touch the source) shouldn't be up to say Lanfear's level, unless something magic happens when you hit a certain number. Has anyone ever explained how that works?

So my friend is reading wot for the first time through and he is just finishing LOC, When he started talking to me about marriage knives. And we have now both come to the conclusion that we need to get our wives marriage knives. (This lead to me explaining to my wife all about marriage knives and their significance and she is now determined to make me her pretty) However I have been searching for information, images, examples of marriage knives and the results are non existent. So I figured I would come here to look for ideas on how where I should go about getting one. If there are any artists that have ideas on drawing up designs or individuals who make knives and wa…

I was hunting for a couple of things in old RJ interviews when I came across this: Emphasis mine. Source: http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Source:Tor_Questions_of_the_Week,_1_February_2005_-_19_July_2005 It made me think of that scene when Demandred shields Taim in AMOL. Sharan channelers shield Taim first, on Demandred's command. Taim reaches for the TP, so Demandred shields him with TP shield. That seems to contradict the statement made by RJ above. Another thing it made me think of is the scene towards the end of ToM where Rand discusses things with the Borderlanders. He tells them that "The Guardian blocks the One Power only", which would indicate that the G…

First got these books back in June, haven't been able to put them down since. I think that's the most I've ever read in such a short period of time! I will admit some of them got a little long, but the story and characters really hooked me. I want to offer a few thoughts, perhaps pose a few questions other people might have opinions on? . Really, really liked to see the different uses of Traveling. I repeatedly wondered at these other seemingly apparent uses, and if they would be left behind. I am glad to see they were used in ways you would actually expect to use such a multipurpose ability. The only thing that got me here was it seemed like it was a bit…

Let's have a thread for discussing them. This week is about One Power levels. http://www.tor.com/2015/06/24/wot-companion-spin-the-wheel-1-excerpt/ I don't think there's much new info here, except for how many slots the scale has and that strength in the Power is definitely tied to longevity. But I could be wrong. Any thoughts?

So we know from the underlying theme of the story that there are ages where the OP is forgotten. This got me to thinking. Will the Seanchan be the ones to cause the OP to be forgotten in the upcoming ages? Given the possible future seen by Avi where the Seanchan conquer the world, their propensity to enslave female channelers and kill male ones, its possible that they wipe out knowledge of the OP entirely by slowly winnowing the pool of available damane into nothing. Evidence for this can be seen in the widespread weakening of channeling strength in the OP in the Westlands from a lack of interbreeding between men and women who carry the gene to channel. Since breeding wit…

Hi, i was wondered... everybody in the series assume that Rand becomes crazy when he starts to hear LT in his head, but is that really be a crazy guy? I say this because that LT voice was real (with real memories and all) so wasn't exactly an hallucination. What do you think?

I can't help but notice the parallel between what some of Robert Jordan's characters call Daes Dae'mar in WOT, or the "Game of Houses", and what some of George R. R. Martin's characters refer to as the "Game of Thrones" in ASOIAF. The only difference (besides the particular players) being that in Martin's novels, the "Game of Thrones" is at the center of almost every single aspect of story, whereas the things you would ordinarily expect from a fantasy novel, i.e. magic, dragons, and so forth, are more towards the periphery, while in Jordan's novels, it's closer to the opposite (although, i would have to say that Jordan gives way more play to his "Game of Houses" in WOT th…

For the love of the Light, I cannot STAND Nynaeve and Elayne. I mean, holy crap! I just got to the part in Fires of Heaven where Rand marches on Caemlyn, and I swear I've read more in one day than I have in the last 6 months about stupid schoolgirl drama between Elayne, Nynaeve, Thom and Juilin. The whole section of them with the menagerie and their escape along the river to Salidar just made me want to puke. I constantly felt like it was a struggle to read more than three or four pages at a time. I was so relieved when I finally came back around to Rand and the first scene was him taunting some hired floozy about teaching her to swim with saidin. He then proceeds to …

We all know that Moiraine had a lot of information to guide her. We know that she knew the means and manner and location and the time of her death. She also knew the specifics of being trapped in Finnland and the best chances of being rescued. I thought that it would be fun to explore which source of information she gained what knowledge from. Here are the known and potential sources of information that guided her: * Min (We know this is the source of whom she will marry) * The Angreal she went through to be tested for full Aes Sedai (Based off the testing we see with Nynaeve and what it showed of Lan and Malkier's future) * The Redstone Doorway * The Ter'angre…

I began reading WoT when I was 14, about the time when book 7 was newly published. I have to say how very, very different WoT is going to change for me because now I'm 29, and I also just finished reading "Costume in the Wheel of Time." I had NO idea this whole time that Randland fashion was supposed to be more Renaissance and not medieval fantasy. Wow. I mean that totally changes the entire bookseries, somehow. No wonder I had such trouble picturing their dress! That, and now that I'm older, I hope to catch other things I might have missed my first time through. I am not looking forward to re-reading certain story arcs though. I have never cared for Perrin, nor E…

Back when Brandon Sanderson was working on the last three Wheel of Time books, he mentioned at least once on his blog that he might at some point post chapter-by-chapter annotations on his web site. He does this for some of his own books (a while after they are published), where he posts insights into the writing process or maybe additional tidbits on the plot and characters. If I remember correctly, he said that he would like to do the same thing for the final three WoT books, but that he would do it only with Harriet's permission. Does anyone know if this is something that still might happen at some point? Has Brandon, Harriet, or anyone else mentioned anything…

Wow, what a journey. I started this series in junior high, around 1995 or so, and picked it up later in life like many others upon completion. A pretty deep feeling of emptiness started to overtake me as I reached closer and closer to AMoL, and now that it's done, I really have a sense of sadness I wasn't expecting. I already miss these characters like I knew them personally. I realize how truly great this series is, and how commendable a job BS did bringing it together in the end. Sure there were flaws, but I feel like he truly did it justice with what he had to work with. A few random musings, forgive me if theyve been discussed, I havent searched any of this and i…

Simple enough question - what's your favourite moment in the books? The bit you get all happy about when it's coming up in your re-reads? Mine is the Quarterstaff v Swords fight with Mat, Gawain and Galad. I loved the way he, a weak and far from hearty farmboy, gave the two smug kids an absolute spanking. Every time I read it I want to jump up and down with glee for him.

I know at this point it's just speculation, but the world of dreams is full of possibilities. Perrin's ability to see/dismiss weaves just by thinking about it is the one that grabs me, though. Considering that sort of thing is possible, would it be possible for a stilled man/woman to go into the world of dreams (say with the twisted ring ter'angreal) and manifest weaves? If they were good enough with manipulating the dream, that is. At that point, it seems like a real question would be, would the weaves work? Could she weave balefire? Could he open a gateway out of the dream?

Hey everyone, im currently halfway done with Lord of Chaos, and im starting to become really friggin annoyed with Egwene, Elayne and Nyaeve, it seems all they do is sniffing at eachother, tugging braids, having difficulty deciding on what close to wear in the dreaming world, along with just being very very annoying to everyone around them, while still spamming sniffs at everyone in sight. Ive come to the point where i allmost cant read it anymore, it just pisses me of so much, why do we hear so much more about their petty social problems than the battles of Perrin(whom i think havent even been mentioned yet in this book), mat and rand. It seems the book is more about …

I'm wondering how long it took everyone to read the entire Wheel of Time series. I know some people spent 23 years and read EotW when it first came out, and others read it in 2 weeks. It took me a month and a half to read the entire series. I didn't read anything else during that time.

At Worldcon I had the pleasure of moderating a panel featuring Harriet, Maria and fantasy authors Wesley Chu and Peter Brett, who spoke about the influence of Wheel of Time on their works. However, there was a fair amount of discussion by Harriet about the new companion volume to the series. This can be summed up as follows: The Wheel of Time Encyclopedia is dead! Long live The Wheel of Time Companion as it will now officially be called. The book will be 350,000 words long (comparable to several of the novels in the series; the longest, The Shadow Rising, is 389,000 words). The book will feature a lot of new artwork, arranged by Irene Gallo at Tor. Publication date like…
