In the final book, in the final battle of elayne's army, gareth bryne surrounds the trolloc in what's basically a rehearsal of the battle of cannae (before a second trolloc army came and the black tower men came to rescue). That was easy to notice. Now I randomly came across a description of the battle of austerlitz, and I noticed it's very similar to what mat does in the last battle - surrender the high ground, lure the enemy into attacking, then take back the high ground and use it to shell the enemy. Even the name is similar, polov heights compared to rea life pratzen heights. It's clear sanderson has researched some famous battles to have the great generals come …

The announcement about the Verin actress got me thinking about her and the way her story ends and also about the oath rod and the way it works. We see examples of how oaths taken on the oath rod are ultimately arbitrated by the person who took the oath. For example, the Aes Sedai oath against lying is not the same as everything an Aes Sedai says being true. The important thing is that the Aes Sedai believes that it is true. And that is not even getting into the idea of Aes Sedai statements that are misleading but not technically lies. As long as the sister believes that she is not lying, she is allowed to do it. The prohibition on using the …

I’m currently in the middle of WH in my reread and one of the questions that came to mind that I can’t recall the details is in regards to the damane. More specifically how much control the suldam has through the link to override the damane. Normally they have total obedience and control, but what about aes sedai who are bound by the 3 oaths? Can they force them to use the one power as a weapon since they control the link, or do the oaths take precedence and prevent this from happening? To take this even further, what about a circle being led by a channeler who is not aes sedai, can they link with an aes sedai to use the power as a weapon?

Some nice foreshadowing early on in this book I hadn't noticed before. Siuan and Moiraine were discussing their plans regarding the Dragon reborn - and specifically consequences. As part of their training they had to memorize all Aes Sedai that had been stilled along with their crimes. Aes Sedai were usually put out of the Tower after being stilled. But not if they were also Amyrlin Seat. They were kept in the Tower as an example - after all, she couldn't be a potential rally point if you saw her doing menial tasks each day - such as scrubbing pots in the kitchen... Nicely done Mr. Jordan.

Hi all, fairly new The wheel of time book reader here and very excited for season 2 coming out. I am currently on the dragon reborn, but i am just curious, i vaguely remember Brandon Sanderson giving an interview where he grouped jordans books into like different trilogies? Im sure he said books 1-3 were more adventure books, and 7-9 were more political or something like that? Can anyone remember the actual groupings he labelled the books as? Just curious, really enjoying the books and looking forward to whats to come.

Here’s the ones I know Black - Darkfriends Yellow - Healing Green - Battle and take lots of Warders Blue - Investigative Red - Gentle men who can channel, don’t generally take warders Brown - Seeks knowledge I don’t exactly know the other two though, does it ever explain what the Grey and White ajahs do? I know that the White is described as being “logical and unfeeling,” but what do they do? And I swear that Grey was never touched on. EDIT: Thanks everyone! Your answers have really cleared things up for me.

Is there any information about the age regression in terms of men who are gentled? Everyone seems stunned by siuan and leane aging backwards after being stilled, presumably because of a lack of precedent. But men are gentled more commonly and even though they do typically die before too long, I don’t recall anyone remarking on a sudden change in the appearance of their age

What has been your feelings towards Nynaeve's book character vs Nynaeve's character in the tv series? Nynaeve's character is known for her angry. This anger is a conduit for her channeling. I've come to conclude that as a character on paper she is highly abusive in almost every way. Nynaeve "switches bottoms, slaps and punches the man she loves, often takes of hurting her friends." However, in the tv series I wonder how her Character will develop. I have to say that I strongly dislike the way Nynaeve's character reads on paper.

Robert Jordan does a fantastic job at world building, but one area I think he falls a little short is on the issue of language. There are, it seems, only two languages spoken anywhere in the world. There is the old tongue, and there is whatever everyone is speaking (Common? English? Basic?). There are lots of accents and dialects, but everyone in the world understands everyone else. This includes not only the Aiel, who live pretty isolated from the rest of the world, but also the Sharans, and even the Seanchan. Even if everyone spoke the same language during the age of legends, spoken language seems to evolve and diverge quickly enough that after a thousand yea…

Hello, I was re-reading The Eye of the World and noticed on the map a marker called, "Eldrene's Veil" but there isn't a reference to it in the book that I see or in the Wheel of Time Companion Book. Does anyone know more than that ? Thanks !

So I have made it to POD in my reread and just want to know so badly what happened to Elayne when she attempted to test the red rod terangreal! I don’t recall ever finding out in the book. What do you guys think? Probably one of those things where the readers imagination and speculation is more fun than just writing an account of what happened. Any thoughts?

3 random questions: Why doesn’t Rand realize Rahvin is in Andor before Lanfear tells him? Asmodean tells Rand that something along the lines of ‘He running a kingdom with a Queen as a plaything’. How many kingdom's are ran by Queens?? Did Mat/Elayne/Thom never mention that Morgase has a random new lover? Why does Moraine think the plan with Siuan about Rand will work? Plan I’m talking about is that Siuan is supposed to be approaching all the rulers announcing Rand is the Dragon. Like the Forsaken are running most of the kingdoms and she knows about at least Illian. Shouldn’t Moraine be smart enough to know that many of the other kingdoms …

In my current reread of WOt, I've noticed again, how RJ manages to allude to various stories, rather than directly reference them. Culain's Hound, the inn where Verin and Alanna Seadai stay at with their collection of Two Rivers prospective novices such as Mat's sister Bodewhin, is one such; and if you don't know the story of how Cuchulainn of the Ulster Cycle of Old Irish stories, got his distinctive name, it'll slip right by you. To wit, the young man Setanta was defending himself against the smith Culann's fierce guard dog, and killed it. He offered to take its place until a replacement could be found and thus became known as Cu Chulainn - Culann's Hound. …

As I progress through my reread, I’m reminded of how I experienced my first read through and the things I was unsure of until the end, one element being who is a darkfriend and who isn’t. Did any of you have surprises regarding any characters’ darkfriend status? I was certainly surprised here and there, for example sheriam and verin (the light bless her 🥰) and then on the flip side some characters I wasn’t sure if they were trustworthy until the end (the example that comes to mind is vanin…I was never sure of him for some reason). There are plenty more characters I wasn’t sure of but those are the ones that immediately came to mind. Anyone else have anything to say on the…

I am curious if you long time WOT readers who have invested in rereading the series many times have ever gotten to the point where you no longer notice something that you haven’t noticed before, or gained a greater understanding of one thing or another. I’ve read the books once back to back (including new spring) and am now only on my first reread and I can see that it will take many more rereads before I can even grasp some of the basics. There is so much to unpack and so many layers to unravel that I don’t think it really can be fully absorbed with one or even two read throughs. Anyway, just curious if anyone has read the series enough times that they felt like they had…

We have plenty of understandable reasons why the book fans, politely expressed, “dislike” the TV show. As someone who is new to the community and forums, this makes me wonder if there are or were the same criticisms from the fandom about the books. Anything the fandom is critical of about the books? I realize there are members of the fandom who separate bs from rj….so I guess I really want to know if any of you guys have things about the story rj told that you were critical of?

Spoilers below. Spoiler Rand being cut off from the source, is that really a reward? It's mentioned and reinforced many times throughout the books how awful it is to have channeled and then be cut off. It causes a depression so deep that people lose the will to live. It doesn't sound like much of a reward for someone who has sacrificed so much to restore balance to the Universe.

A very subjective question to answer but I really wanted to know if this has ever been a topic here on DM before ? The motivator for me was re-reading "Towers of Midnight". I was particularly struck by chapter 30 called "Men Dream Here". It affects me so much each time i read it and I wondered if others have similar chapters that gave them that feeling. Anyone have similar book chapters ?
