  1. Started by HighWiredSith,

I recently finished the first novel of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series The Final Empire. Having only weeks before read Ender's Game with my son (who was reading it for a book report), I couldn't help but notice the similarities between both author's treatment of their main characters ascent to god-ness. It seemed that both Kelsier (and eventually Vin if I can speculate a theory while not having read books two and three) and Ender achieve a level of god-ness, becoming both a destroyer of one world and helping to create another. I wonder if the fact that both Sanderson and Orson Scott Card are Mormons provide some common ground for the way these two very different au…

You guys! Read the comment conversation that Brandon Sanderson started. He mentioned it on his page and I think that we really should start a meme based off of this. If you read it, you will see why. We need to label everything we say, our comments on things on Dragonmount, youtube, facebook, twitter, everything as Brandon Sanderson. It would be great publicity, get a lot more people to hear about him and everyone will start wondering who on earth he is and why he is commenting everywhere on everything. Who is with me!? --Brandon Sanderson Also "Nice try, Brandon." needs to come up a lot too if you find place it works. Let's make a meme :D This pa…

So, I am currently in my final year of a BA in English and am struggling desperately to decide on something to study at Post-Graduate level. I have often thought about how unbelievably cool it would be to study WoT as an academic subject. Sometimes I wish I hadn't been born for another twenty years as I firmly believe that someday academic institutions will offer some form of courses relating to The Wheel of Time. Apparently a few Universities are now studying Tolkiens fictional works quite seriously so why not Jordans? Anyone have any views on this.....?

Hi All, I have recently re-read Tad William's Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (quite good, by the way) in which there is a race of immortals called the Sithi. I am now making my way through Rothfuss's books, and note references to some beings called the Sithe. There seem to be some parallels between the two races in the two series, aside from the obviously common origin of the word. I hope this isn't so basic that it's laughable, but I wonder if someone could tell me about the "real world" base for these names/races. Thanks

  11. Hi all, I'm 29 years old and began reading Jordan around 13 - so the majority of my life I have read Jordan's style within fantasy. I'm the type that's read the first 7 books about 15-20 times each. Throughout my life, I've read a variety of other fantasy/sci fi books - Feist, Orson Scott Card, etc. For some reason, I truly never paid any attention to George RR Martin. So as I wait for the next Jordan series, I decide to check it out. On Amazon there are plenty of reviews that describe "A song of ice and fire" as grittier than tWoT and with a deeper view into evil. My favorite series challenged, I decided to pick up books 1 and 2 and see what the hub bub is all ab…

Three centuries from now, the human race has survived a nuclear war and expanded into space, colonising several nearby star systems. During their colonising efforts, humanity has come into contact with 'Them', a powerful and apparently ruthless alien race. War has raged ever since between the two races, a sixty-year cycle of blood and deadlock. Jakob Douglas is a former British special forces operative dishonourably discharged from the service for organising a mutiny, but still held on the reserve list (thanks to politics). When it appears that an elite alien infiltration unit has breached Earth's defenses and crash-landed near Jakob's home town of Dundee, Jakob's co…

Hey everyone! I was talking to a dean at my college, and she told me I should teach a class on the Wheel of Time my senior year. I've decided that I'm going to do, but I have no idea what to do for it. If you were taking a class about the Wheel of Time, what would want to get out it? What would you want to discuss or talk about?

There where a few items on the Debates and Discussion boards that I was just itching to comment on. First one I commented as 'guest' (this was on the temp boards and guests could post on D&D)... at which point, I decided to register and put in my two cents worht on a few other topics *g* ... I think I have spend a fortune since...lol :P .

Alright, I have been reading The Way of Kings. Very slowly, I might add. Not for lack of want, but because far too often I fly through books and miss important details. I am still finding tons of new things I never noticed every time I do a Wheel of Time reread, and please keep in mind I have been reading them for over 12 years now. I have done upwards of 20 read throughs of the series (of course not that many on the newer books, but you get my point. That being said, I have only finished Part 1 and the start of that first Interlude, so my question may be answered later on, but it is driving me crazy now. When numerous places are mentioned I love to be able to…

Hi guys and girls, payday in a couple of days, so a trip to the bookstore is planned (of course). I'm thinking of getting The Dark Tower novels. As i understand it these are fantasy novels, right? They're not Stephen King's usual horror stories? I generally only read fantasy and nothing else.

  29. The definitive Encyclopedia of Science Fiction is now online. This project started life as the 3rd Edition of the print version (previous editions published in 1979 and 1993) but rapidly grew far too large to be published: the final version of the title is anticipated to be more than 4 million words in length and contain more than 12,000 entries. The current version of the Encyclopedia is the beta, consisting of about 75% of the 'final' book, which is anticipated in about a year's time. However, even the 'complete' book will still be updated on a regular basis after that time. Note that this is the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, and covers the SF genre alone. Th…

Thirteen years ago, Jason started a new WoT site called Dragonmount. Almost in spite of ourselves, its still here and still going strong. You can read more about this on our front page. In honor of our birthday, we're partnering with Tor Books to give away one copy of the recently released The Eye of the World graphic novel adaption. To enter just reply to this with a post about why you enjoy Dragonmount. It's a random drawing, so only one post per customer please. Here's to thirteen more!
