  1. As some of you know, Doselan had to step down as the Wolfkin Social Group Leader due to RL constraints. We posted a call for applications from within the Wolfkin, but did not receive enough applications from people who fit the qualifications we need. As a result, since we want to find the best leader possible for this wonderful group, we are inviting people from all of DM to apply. The new deadline for applications is March 31. More information about applying can be found below. Job Duties for Social Group Leaders: 1. Able to dedicate at least 10 hours a week to this Social Group and DM Staff. This includes keeping up with threads on the DM Staff boards, en…

  2. While going through these forums, I noticed that while one of my favorite series outside of WoT was being discussed (ASoIaF), the works of Joe Abercrombie seem nowhere to be found on here. It is a crapsack world, meaning that as people almost all the characters have little to no redeeming qualities, but they are all so interesting to read about. Particularly I like Sand dan Glokta, once dashing army officer turned disfigured crippled torturer, and Logen Ninefingers, a great barbarian. If any of you have read the series and its two standalone novels I would love to discuss it and I would love to recommend this series to all who have not read it.

So to bring everyone up to speed: I've got a thread going about the Eye of the World here on the forum that tends to get sidetracked now and then. One of those side tracks has been language. I thought, hey, why derail that thread when I can start a whole new one? And here we are. First there was the idea that using the masculine pronoun as a default is sexist. I agree with that. I agree so much that I'd say it was true. It works to erase women. For example, say you've got four people in a room. Two men and two women. It is fine to say, "hey guys!" to them. But it would be a little weird to say, "hey girls!" "Guy" means both "boy" and "boys and girls." …

Hey guys, my new column went live tonight on the main page. It's essentially a WoT oriented review of other fantasy books that have the same sort of spirit at the Wheel of Time, an attempt to answer the 'what should I read while I'm waiting for aMoL'. This months article was Patrick Rothfuss. It's very much a new process so I'm interested in feedback--you can find it here. http://bit.ly/g9vuua

Hello everybody. Brand new to the site and looking for some info. I'm wanting to start in on a new series but haven't really been following the industry as close as I should have been. I've read Jordan, Martin, Erikson, Goodkind (well, up to book 6. Not interested in continuing that one), Herbert's Dune books, you get the idea Are there any other series out there along the same lines as these? Obviously I like the big sprawling epic stuff but I'm willing to look at shorter series as well if they have that "big" feel. Thanks, Alazar

I don't mean this as an advertisment for them, and I'm not connected to them in any way, but I just wanted to give credit where its do ... I had never had a Kindle or anything even remotely like that ... but when I heard you could get it for free, I chose to do so last night in order to obtain Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's Distinctions. I have to say: I am very impressed and think its very cool. Im not tech-savvy. TRUST me on THAT!!! - LOL!!! ;) But its just really cool. For me, NOTHING will EVER replace the feel and the...PRESENCE of an old fashioned BOOK in my hands......you folks should see my (three, lol) paperback copies of The Shadow Rising, lol. …

Hey everybody, so, many years ago, I read some of the Sword of Truth novels. My memory is pretty foggy about them... I was reading a lot of different stuff at the time. Lately I've been trying to figure out how far in the series I actually read. I tried reading some of the wikipedia articles on the various books, but it all sounds kind of maybe but not really familiar, so that wasn't too helpful. Now. I thought of asking those of you who have read (and remember! lol) the series to help me figure it out. So, would you help me? Are these all even from this series? Scenes I maybe kinda sorta remember: - something involving Cara, torture, coals on a belly, an…

[WARNING THIS THREAD MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR, THE WAY OF KINGS, MISTBORN OR THE WHEEL OF TIME] I finally have The Way of Kings, took me a while but I finally have it. As with my read through of Mistborn, I will write down my thoughts on each chapter as I read it. It is kind of a scary thought for me to start this though knowing that Sanderson plans on doing ten of these books, which means that the series most likely will not be done until 2021+. If this book gets me hooked then I suspect I will finally understand how the first Wheel of Time readers feel. Well here I go. I am now opening the book... Prelude. Wow, this artwork is amazing. I have never seen…

  14. I was wondering: 1. I've never read any of ASOIAF, but I'm intrigued. Are the books self-contained, or if I finish Book 1, will there be a huge "to be continued", forcing me to keep going and then eventually wait until 2019 or whenever for Martin to finish the series? 2. There seems to be a absolute ton of interest in ASOIAF on these boards, just based on my two weeks of moderate browsing around. Is there some connection, were Jordan and Martin close friends or something? Or is just that well known a series (that I just didn't know about until now?) Anyway mostly just asking out of curiosity. I'm not sure I want to commit to 3500 more pages of anything, …

So, I'm six hours into a nine hour overnight shift, and the desire to sleep is getting to me... so I'm watching the 1996 Rome + Juliet. (Leo and Claire 4 eva.) But, as I watch, I am torn. Were I to be a member of one of these two noble houses, which would I choose? I am basing this solely upon the movie. Screw the plays, Shakespeare's intent, or anything else. Capulets Pros- Well dressed Well equipped with 9mm "swords" Well connected politically Tybalt, the King of Cats (major badass, played by John Leguizamo) Cons- The leading members are a bit insane and/or incestuous Seem to support frequent dental modifications among their lower members More th…

Not about the game, about the music: 1. Before the game, Fox TV brought out one of the stars of its series Glee (which was coming up right after the game) to sing "America The Beautiful". Let's be clear, folks -- this is NOT the National Anthem! By Act of Congress on March 3rd, 1931 (36 U.S.C. § 301) the National Anthem of the United States is "The Star-Spangled Banner". The cameras showed players and fans doffing hats and placing hands over their hearts for a song that is NOT the National Anthem, which is WRONG. 2. When they DID get to the National Anthem, Christina Aguilera blew the lyrics. Come on, Christina! "The twilight's last REAMING"?!?!? Third gra…

Each year the Red Ajah from Dragonmount organises an event called International Woman’s Week. Traditionally this occurs in the week leading up to the real life International Woman’s Day event on 8th March and is generally centered around the theme of the year set by IWD. This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of IWD and our expanding our own IWW to two weeks with an extra week for a real life, WOT-wide activity. All Wheel of Time fans are invited to join us and participate in this event. We call upon any Wheel of Time fans (male or female) who wish to do something more than discuss gender issues on an online community forum. What can you do? Org…

Ok, this is a short story that i have written over the last few days. It is set in the Warhammer 40'000 universe, so the setting, history, technology, terms, races, etc are property of Games Workshop. However, the plot and characters are all mine. Here it goes. UNIDENTIFIED CONTACT! ALL HANDS ON DECK! REPEAT, UNIDENTIFIED CONTACT! ALL HANDS ON DECK! The voice of the First Mate roared throughout the ship, the speakers rendering his voice into an emotionless monotone. Zander Kerden woke up with a start, nearly banging his head on the roof of his ridiculously small cabin. Red lights flashed and loud horns blared, accompanied by the muffled sound of over three…

  29. A new Mistborn novel is coming out in 2011. No title or release date yet, but it's a short story that Sanderson was writing during his WoT off-period and it's ballooned out to about 60,000 words, maybe more now. Tor have bought the rights and it'll be out next year. So, 2011 will not be Sandersonless after all. The new book is set a couple of centuries after the trilogy and we will see a world where technology has moved on, and firearms now coexist alongside allomancy.

Hello Board. I'm a huge fan of Wheel of Time, and I get that in Fantasy you don't have to respect laws of physics, so it's more of a joke post. Or maybe an idea for a weapon for future authors. Anyways - here are my thought on creating weapon of mass destruction with portals: Generally we need 1 Vacuum tube, made of glass. 1 iron chunk. 1) Put (teleport) chunk in sealed tube. 2) Position tube verticaly. 3) Open two waygates that "close on each other": 4) Wait for couple of weeks, for chunk to accelerate. 5) Drop tube somewhere in a city you want to devastate, and run away. 6) Wait till your waygates-weave loose up. 7) No more city. Granted, with use o…
