I have been kind of bored and would like a new series to read. I have read some of The Sword of Truth and A Song of Fire and Ice and was not a big fan of either. I have read The Sword, the Ring, and the Chalice, and liked it; I am considering getting the rest of her books, but am a little worried that they will be let downs. I would love a series like Wheel of Time where plot lines are clearly incomplete at the end of each book (except the last I hope) and new concepts are not flung out of right field for each new book and forgotten in the subsequent novels, but the main attribute I am interested in is that the series be complete as I do not need a second Wheel of Tim…

Six centuries ago, the world was destroyed in the Atomic Flame Deluge, leaving humanity scattered and broken and the world infested by radiation and mutations. One of the few surviving points of continuity to the old world is religion, with the Christian Faith surviving in the form of isolated monasteries and a 'new Rome' that has arisen in the east of North America. When a monk discovers relics dating back to before the nuclear war, a chain of events is set in motion that will reverberate down the centuries. A Canticle for Leibowitz is a central text of the classic science fiction canon, originally published in 1960 and winning the 1961 Hugo Award as well as a slew …

I just finished reading Assassin's quest and I'm wondering if going straight on to Fool's errand and the rest of The Tawny Man trilogy before reading Liveship traders will mean I miss out on certain elements? Put simply, can I read Farseer-Tawny Man-Liveship Traders without spoiling anything?

First, let me say that I really enjoyed reading Elantris. My first issue is with Seon's. If a Seon has an Aon at its core, how come it only ceases to function when the Shaod takes its master? I would think that with the chasm causing universal Aon failure that all Seon's would "go mad" like they do when a person goes through the Shaod. It also seems that the only way for them to be "fixed" is if their Aon's are somehow fixed. My second issue is with the whole Elantris/Elantrian idea. If Elantrians are the only ones that can manipulate the power of the Dor using Aon's, and if Elantris is what allows a person to become an Elantrian, how did: a) Elantris c…

I really don't want to make my first post be something redundant, and please direct me to where I can find more info on this if I failed to find it. I did a search but came up empty handed and with really old posts. Basically, I started reading the first two books waiting for Brian S. to finish the new book and I can't help but feel like I'm reading a sort of child's version of the WoT. I don't mean to hate, TG does a pretty good job at telling a story but... anyway I don't want to just start criticizing but wanted some input from you all. Is it just me? Am I crazy to feel like TG is pulling some serious inspiration from Robert Jordan?

Fifty years ago, the Holy Empire of Mann was born when a nihilistic urban cult conquered the city of Q'os. In the decades since then, it has overrun the shores of two continents, conquering all the lands of the Mideres Sea aside from the islands known as the Mercian Free Ports and the powerful Alhazii Caliphate to the east, the source of the Empire's gunpowder. For ten years the Empire has besieged the Mercian city of Bar-Khos. Despite the Empire's military power, the walls of Bar-Khos have continued to defy them, but the city is overflowing with refugees and keeping the supply lines to the east open is becoming increasingly difficult. One refugee, Nico, is driven to…

Kitai, during the Ninth Dynasty. The Emperor has given the nation many years of peace and prosperity. Far to the west, in a valley where the last great battle between Kitai and Tagur was fought, a dutiful son pays homage to his dead father by burying the bones of the fallen. His honourable task is noted by the Tagurans who give him a princely gift: two hundred and fifty Sardian horses. You give a man one Sardian horse to honour him greatly, four or five to elevate him above all others. Two hundred and fifty is an overwhelming gift, a gift that instantly elevates Shen Tai into a player in Kitan politics. These are perilous times. The First Minister and the empire's gr…

After finishing Winter's Heart I decided to take a short break from the series to read the first Mistborn book. I have to say I enjoyed it very much, and it has given me a new found confidence in Brandon Sanderson's ability to finish WoT properly. The characters are all for the most part, very likeable. (My personal favorites are Vin, Kelsier, Sazed, and Ham) And I like the whole Allomancy system and the story just had so many twists and turns to it that it just kept sucking me into it. Definately a great read and I really look forward to finishing the trilogy (Which, I'm going to finish reading up to The Gathering Storm first until I read the next two books) and am proba…

I know it was a series, maybe just a trilogy. The main character was a prince and the younger brother of two (i think it was just the 2 brothers). The father dies (or maybe the older brother kills the father...). The younger brother goes into hiding. The story was set in a "middle ages" type setting, but when the main character goes into hiding he finds out the church has been using technologies such as electricity, vacuum's, lightbulbs, etc to run their lives and keep everyone else ignorant (for lack of a better word). Anyway, I read one or two of the books, never got to read the third, and don't know what happened to any of them. If this st…

Britain has been engulfed by war. The Scottish Parliament has declared independence only to find the British Army being deployed to keep control of the country. In retaliation Scotland has contracted a New Model Army, Pantegral, to fight on its behalf. New Model Armies are paramilitary forces the likes of which the world has not seen before. They are democratic mercenary forces where every soldier is consulted - via real-time communications - over the formulation of tactics and strategy. NMAs are noted for their high morale, as unlike traditional armies their soldiers are never placed in danger through the following of orders handed down imperiously by politicians or…

This post went missing so doing it again... I'm no good at drawing but of course I visualise all the characters. Sometimes i find that a character is visualised as a real person and it's so strong. In particular i see Mazrim Taim as Baal from Stargate SG1. He's played by Cliff Simon and has just the right amount of good looks, with cruel arrogance. I have a link below but not sure if it will take you to the right bit. http://www.gateworld.net/omnipedia/characters/index.shtml Anyway, I wondered if anyone else thought of the characters as actors on TV or cinema... maybe even a news reader!!! I reckon it would be really hard to cast for a real film as so many …
