  3. Best description of the differences between Democrats and Republicans,Europeans and Americans. http://www.dunceuponatime.com/weaver-schwarzenegger-%e2%80%9808 during a two hour power session, where we were flying through four semesters of social studies that my brother finally asked me, “I still don’t get it. What’s the difference between a Republican and a Democrat?” The only time I had ever previously been so lost for words was when my Grandmother asked me, “BC, what do gay people… do?” Unlike my Grandmother, Bryan could easily chase me down if I ran away. Clearing my throat, and blinking my eyes like a punched out boxer, I frantically scrounged throu…

I recently read Waiting for the Galactic Bus and The Snake Oil Wars by Parke Godwin. I can't decide how I actually feel about them. Has anyone else read these books?

Anything goes. Just some guidelines - it's on Planet Earth. Technology can be as advanced as you like, but bodies are still biological (although can be genetically improved - just no mind uploading or living in virtual reality worlds, OK?). Here's mine. Geography The earth's population is much lower than today - say, about half a billion people. Everybody lives in dense arcologies of a few thousand people ('villages'), though there are a few denser nodes with hundreds of thousands of people ('towns') and one world capital ('the City'). The vast majority of the world's surface is a nature reserve (the 'Outside'), where people can go travelling, but are not allo…

It seems to me that a few people on this forum ask for advice regarding troubles they are having with a friendship or a relationship with a significant other. Here is my basic points of advice that I always give: 1) Whether you have a problem with someone, or the person has a problem with you, you first need to ask yourself this basic question: "Do I want this relationship to continue?". This is not something you should just ask once, but something you should ask yourself whenever you encounter a problem in any relationship. To do this, examine the things you like about them and the things you don't like about them. Compare the two and decide if one outweighs th…

  7. New FAQ from Brandon Sanderson Brandon Sanderson updated his site today with some of his most frequently asked questions since the recent news that he would be completing A Memory of Light. He gives a good description of what writing AMoL feels like to him. Pretend you have purchased an expensive violin from a master craftsman. It probably wouldn’t [...] http://www.dragonmount.com/News/?p=330

Well, its like this, I haven't read any books on Science Fiction. I know Fantasy is clubbed under SF, but I feel its just wrong. I want to start a pure SF series. I don't think I have read any. What I want is something that'll show me what the Genre can offer, and still be something that can drag me into it. Doesn't have to be a series, but if it is, it'll be a plus point. And don't give me a bunch of names, just say two or three. I want to pick up a few books next week, and have three or four books in mind and cash only for two more. So, that means I can get two books of SF at the most.

Hi everyone. I'm a new writer and want to post a short story I wrote so here it goes. My Burden by Lee Barrett I have to carry this burden alone because of words spoken in hast. My heart is dark. My soul is tainted. My legs are weak. Will I ever find peace? For this burden, I must carry alone. It's been almost four years now that I recieved the call imforming me that Ricky's mother has past. News was past along of the plans for the funeral. I could not bring up the woman's face but I had demons to bury. As I stood looking down at the body I still was unable to recall the face. Not knowing what to do nex…

*******WARNING******* Minor Spoiler's cannot be avoided, I've done my best to avoid major ones. Read at your own risk. *******WARNING******* So, given as Harriet has found us a new author, having never heard of him before I picked up a couple of his books to read. Harriet read Mistborn when she chose him, and as such, thats the one I read first. I'm currently reading Elantris. I give him an 8 out of 10. He's a very good author, and he really know's how to make his character's seem real. Vin and Kelsier, the main character's of the book both appeared to be real, and in certain respects I could identify with both of them. The book is not a slow paced bo…

Falling in Love seems to be the easy part, it just...happens... But when she has decided the relationship is over for her various reasons..and her various actions..without it looking like things will ever be fixed, how does one get over it? I mean, I know too much now in a way, I was being cheated on for 3-4 months, was lied to when asked her directly about it, I ended up being a huge cosmic joke...even my roomate knew about it. I have since been lied to by her when asking direct and simple quistions, but despite everything, I still LOVE her, I am happy when I am around her, things still feel 'right' when I am near her, granted when she leaves my company to go…

  15. Sci-fi article about Brandon Sanderson The Sci-fi website has posted an article about Brandon Sanderson beginning work on A MEMORY OF LIGHT. Brandon makes some interesting comments in the article. It’s definitely a good read. I started re-reading the series again and noticed something odd in book 7. The map inside the front cover (1st ed - 1st printing hardback) is upside down. Is this in every book or just mine? Found it odd and wanted to ask around.

I have been plowing through a lot of books lately, mostly on YOUR recommendations. I adored The Lies of Locke Lamora and was thrilled to find out there was a second book out already! Anyway, I just finished The Name of the Wind. Not... brilliant. But gripping! Fun! GREAT characters. I liked it a lot. The ending definitely left me wanting more, too. So, left from my original library foray is The Darkness That Comes Before by Bakker. I'll let you know what I think when I finish that one. (Holidays might slow me down, though.) My only complaint? All your excellent recs are ongoing! I need more finished series!

Terry Pratchett - the bestselling author of the Discworld series of novels and many other books - has confirmed he's been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimers. Pratchett has sold 55 million copies of his novels and is the world's biggest-selling living fantasy author bar only JK Rowling (and Stephen King, if you consider him a fantasy author). 1% of all books sold in the UK, fiction or otherwise, are Pratchett novels. He is also the UK's most shoplifted author. After many years of indifference from the USA, American seems to finally warmed to Pratchett with his last two Discworld novels (Thud! and Making Money) appearing on the New York Times Bestseller list…
