As long as you go in with a mind set that it's a graphic novel story Based on history and Not hoping to see a historically accurate movie, you'll LOVE it. Most of the complaints I've heard are from history buffs who are angry that it's not realistic or in parts historically accurate.

It helps also if you enjoy looking at nearly naked beautiful men.

Well taht would be my problem Mendorah.

And the nearly naked sexy man thing wouldn't attract me.... what about women? :P

Mendorah: that last part is what Empy's looking forward to I think :)

Saw this movie yesterday with my dad. Easily the best movie iv'e seen in a long, long, long time.

I'd definately pay to see it again and for me, thats the sign of a good movie.

For me it was about what I expected. I went in thinking "graphic novel converted to film" and that's what I had. Not really an character development, or even much plot, just a very visually compelling story. I wasn't bored, and I'm not coming down hard on the movie, but I don't think I'd go to see it again. If it was on TV I would probably watch for a while, but not all the way through.

There were some great fight scenes and it looked great. The plot was ok and there was little character development. The best movie of the year (only because no other movies have come out). I would only suggest going to see it for the matrix like fight scenes and visual effects.

I am extremely excited about seeing this movie, but quite annoyed it is another few weeks before it comes out here in the UK.

As a Classicist and Ancient Historian, I'll probably end up nit-picking over all the historically inaccurate parts! It's a shame I can't find my copy of Herodotus to do a quick comparison nearer the release date here in the UK! But, touch wood, it cannot stoop the levels of that Troy, which ruined Homer's brilliant epic poem, The Iliad.

it was good but not great. I thought it dragged a bit and stuff. The battles were the best part.

Personally I thought it was amazing. True, the plot was slightly hollow, but then, the movie wasn't made for the plot.

Oh and, the sandy haired guy, he was Faramir from LOTR.

Thanks I knew I saw him before.

I knew the Captain was in Troy. Achilles right hand man.

though I was a bit debbie downer on the movie before, I have to say that I am glad I saw it in the theater, the visual effects were particularly stunning on the big screen.

Corki, I see it a little like RP here at DM, based on the world of WoT, but not really the WoTiverse... same thing with this, based on Spartan/Persian conflict, but superstylized.

It made 70 million this weekend in theatres. This tells me that the audience thirsts for a great movie. We are tired of walking in the desert of bad movies.

Again, 300 not a bad movie, just not a super-great-oh-my-god-I-gotta-watch-it-again movie.. well unless you are Menodorah and like the skantidly clan men. *g*

I saw it this weekend, on IMAX - and loved it.

The history major in me was nitpicking, yeah, but the comic geek in me was hollering "THEY GOT IT PERFECT!"

*hugs her copy of the 300 hardback*

Agree, as a comic book adaptation, the movie was great. Again I loved most of the battle sequences, however I was not on the edge of my seat and did not choke up when certain people died. Again, I had no attachment to the characters. If Maxmimus showed up though.. I would have.... noo... let's not talk about it.... I have something in my eye...

The movie was freakin awesome! I wanna see it again! I think I may be having withdrawal... just kidding!

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

nufffff said. :)

Oh geeze... now I need to watch it again.

Russell Crowe was soooo hot in that film.... wait... I meant.... ok you got me... I bet Maximus would have tossed Kate from the floating board and let her freeze in the ocean, instead of just letting go and giving up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Resurrecting this thread for us Brits out there, as the film opened here last night.

So, off I went, trying to hide my historical knowledge of events based on Herodotus. I am pleased to say it didn't fall into the category that Troy did. I don't know what others thought, but I found the film extremely slow, and this sort of made me lose interest in places. I think this was enhanced by the slow motion special affects, which, to be honest, got a bit boring once you saw them once. But I can understand why this was done, and that was to get the comic book feel into the film.

Over the weekend, I read an article in The Times newspaper that said the film was Pro-America and Anti=Iran. If I hadn't read this article, I don't think I would have noticed. However, I really do not know what the Iranians are complaining about - the Persians (Persia is now modern day Iran) got beat eventaully, and the victors always write the history. And of course, it's going to be biased.

What did strike me was this comparison between perfect and imperfect, as well as good and bad. Yes, the Spartans did pick the best men and I liked the way that the traitor was shown to be a cripple. If this was the case, I don't think we'll ever know! The exotic nature of the Persian army was well illustrated with the various different men thrown into battle, and the Greeks did view the Persians as exotic barbarians. And well done for all the use of the gold in the Persian army, and especially on Xerxes! If you ever read Aeschylus' play, Persians, this image of gold is very apparent!

Overall, I thought it was a good film, with some good points, but sadly some bad points. It was a lot better than Troy, but it wasn't in the field that Gladiator was. As a Classicist, I'm just wondering what next historical event they are going to cover...
