Question about calendar years.

Featured Replies

I've read timelines discussed and seen the NE marker (998 NE for example) , but I cannot find anything the states what that is. I've seen AB for After Breaking and FY for the Free Years. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Stands for New Era! It's the Farede calendar that started being used after the Hundred Years' War.

AB is after the breaking and marks years since the end of the breaking of the world. FY is Free Year which marks years after the end of the Trolloc Wars as there was so much destruction during the conflict that what year it was couldn't be agreed upon. NE is New Era and marks years after the end of the War of the Hundred Years due to the same issue arising. Whether they change the dating system or not will depend on if they actually use dates in the show as they're rarely if ever used in the books outside of the glossaries.

They'll probably adjust those for the show, like just go with NE or AB instead of confusing the issue for viewers.

Yeah, this seems like a good idea, although as poster above says, they might not really need to mention years. GoT and The Expanse both get away without really mentioning years or dates much.
