Shaking his head Andular muttered a curse to himself as he watched the horses being loaded on board the ship. His curse was not for the way the horses were being treated but from the strange behavior of his charge. The woman seemed skittish at best and paranoid to boot. He had tried to help her up the ramp onto the boat but when he had gone to take her hand she jumped. Light you would have thought his hand an adder. This was going to be a long trip he thought to himself as he glanced up where the Aes Sedai peered over the side of the boat at him. As soon as she saw him look up she disappeared from view. “A long and strange trip.”

Once their things were on board Andular made his way up onto the boat, Waters Mist, was the name of the craft and her Captain a burly Tarian named Faldo stood on deck.

“Will we be ready to cast off soon?” The man stroked his oily beard and nodded then turned and barked some orders at the crew. Looking for Elizabeth he found no sign of her on deck and asked a passing crew member where to show him to their cabins. Andular had taken one next to Elizabeth of course and before going inside he knocked at her door. A rustling from within was followed by a soft voice asking who it was.

Light who did th woman think it was. “Andular Aes Sedai I wanted to see if everything was in order.” The door did not open instead she told him the accomadations were fine. “If you would like to dine with me later I would be honored.” No response this time and he gave up retiring to his rooms.

Laying on the bed he tried to puzzle out what was bothering the woman but could not come up with an answer. Perhaps he needed a bath or his clothing was a mess. Taking the bastard sword off his back and leaning it against the wall he flopped down in his bunk.

Days passed as they sailed northward and little changed in the behavior of Elizabeth. She did everything short of jumping over board to avoid him. The weather turned fair but began to become colder as the days went by.

Two days before their journey was to end found Andular on deck watching the scenery pass by as they sailed. He missed the borderlands and it would be good to smell the crisp air taste some of the local dishes once more. A sensation on the back of his neck caused him to turn from the rail. Elizabeth stood several yards away apparently watching the shore slip by but every so often her eyes darted toward him.

As the boat made ready for travel, Elizabeth looked around for a woman that looked to be a part of the crew. She was indeed and led Elizabeth to her room. Hiding in her room, Elizabeth set about organizing her dresses in the small closet. She then set out her healing items on the small desk and set the books in a pile on the floor and her papers on top of that. She would read and study along this trip- whatever she had to do to avoid him.

Setting about reading the book on the borderlands, she started studying the basic history of the Blight and of the many kingdoms lost to it. It was very interesting but she could not keep her peace for long. A knock came at the door and Elizabeth dropped the book. Please let it be the woman from earlier...

“Who is it?” she asked softly. He responded clearly, “Andular, Aes Sedai. I wanted to see if everything was in order.” Was this bait to open her door and talk to him? He was a Grand Master which meant that more than likely he would stand against her no matter how she fought him. As long as the door stayed shut, she was fine. Otherwise, she was defenseless.

“My rooms are fine, thank you.” A pause came as the awkward silence set in. “If you would like to dine with me later I would be honored.” No she couldn’t. No she wouldn’t. After a while she heard his footsteps as he left and she returned to reading her book.

The days passed as she continued reading and studying. Her stomach was heavy but the herbs worked as she continued taking sleeping droughts at night and a pot for the day. She read and wrote when she pleased and simply sat in silence often. The woman that had helped her the first day continued twice a day to her room with food. Andular knocked on occasion but Elizabeth always told him to let her be. The longer away from him, the better.

The journey was nearing the end when Elizabeth decided to risk going outside. Donning a dark blue dress and her cloak, she tried to be careful and hide from Andular. Making it out of the hallway and onto the deck, Elizabeth made her way to the rail. It felt good to have fresh air in her system. Her stomach even felt better with the wind on her face.

After a few minutes of standing there, her hood fell from her face and Elizabeth glanced to her side. Standing there was Andular. Staring at the shoreline again, she felt her knees grow weak with fear and gripped the bar a little tighter. Glancing to him every few moments, she caught his eye.

They continued looking at each other for a few moments before she slowly approached her. She turned her look to the shoreline. As he stood beside her, she didn’t look at him as she slowly said, “How is your trip?” He said something of being glad to be at the borderlands again, but Elizabeth was thinking about her stomach and her head at the moment. Why was she getting lightheaded again?

”Elizabeth Sedai, would you join me for dinner this evening?” Well, dinner wouldn’t be so bad. Perhaps then he would leave her alone. “Yes, I will join you.” Raising the hood on her cloak, she turned from the rail and returned to her room before he could say anything else. She took one glance back at him as she made her way across the deck and he had a weird look upon his face, as if trying to figure her out. It was time he gave up.

That evening, she heard a knock at her door. ”Elizabeth Sedai? Are you ready for dinner?” Elizabeth was sitting on her bed in a yellow dress and her hair in a pretty bun. Simple yet elegant, she rose slowly and went to the door. Opening it slowly, she said she was indeed. He offered her his arm and she slowly reached out. Barely touching his hand, she tried to keep from wincing as he held her fingers slightly. Looking away from him, she locked her door and let him lead her to a private dining room.

Having taken tea earlier, her stomach was calm for which she was thankful. He pulled her chair out for her and she took the seat quickly as he then joined her across the table. They said nothing as they both sipped their wine and she smiled slightly as she saw the salad and soup that smelled delicious. Taking a small bite of the salad and then taking a smell of the soup, she forgot herself for a moment and began to enjoy herself.

Looking up from her meal, she saw Andular watching her. “It is not polite to stare,” she said curtly, then returned to her meal. He chuckled slightly as she went back to her meal. Picking at it, she ate over half of her food but found her stomach was full. Looking for a way to get out of the room before he spoke, she rose from her chair quickly. He saw her stand and rose as well- what a gentleman. “If you will excuse me,” she said quickly, turning for the door. He rushed around the table to lead her back but instead made a half crash into her chair which tripped her.

Falling towards the floor, he reached out and grabbed her, catching her in his arms. Feeling herself in his arms, Elizabeth looked up for a moment at him and felt his smell all around her. Her head already light, it was only a few moments before once again, she was passed out.

Hoisting the limp form of Elizabeth in his arms Andular studied her delicate features. “Light there is a tale to be told somewhere here.” He wondered if she would ever confide in him with it. Doubtful he thought as he carried her out of the dinning room. Passing a serving boy he told them they were finished and that he may clean up. A gently and quietly as he could he took her to her room and once inside carefully laid her on the bed. With clumsy hands he unbuttoned her dress and pulled it over her head. Elizabeth muttered but did not yet wake.

Lying on the bed in her shift Andular thought she might not be pleased to wake up with him staring at her in her small clothes. Bending over he placed a pillow under her head before covering her in a blanket.

Wetting a wash cloth from the basin on the end table near her bed he placed it on her head. Dimming the lights he quietly left and returned to his room. Laying in his bed awake for long hours in case Elizabeth needed him he thought of his homeland. They would make landfall tomorrow and from there it was a short ride to Fal Dara.

At mid morning the following day they docked. The day was cloudless and the sun shone warmly on Andular’s shoulders as he watched the crew unload the horses. Elizabeth Sedai appeared that haunted look in her eyes there when she looked at him as it always was. Managing his best smile he motioned for her to join him. “A fine day for travel Aes Sedai” Elizabeth just nodded and watched the horses being unloaded.

Before long they were on their way, cloaks wrapped around them as they traveled. Not a word was mentioned about the previous night and Andular thought it best if kept that way. Elizabeth still did everything short of galloping to keep her distance from him and once again he wondered what he could do to win her trust.

Soon they began passing horses and wagons as merchants brought their wares to the keep for sale. The stone walls of Fal Dara appeared soon after causing Andular to grin and laugh. “Tell me Aes Sedai have you ever been to this great city?” Elizabeth just nodded. Well burn her but he was not going to let her moodiness ruin his excitement. “Tonight we will dine in style.”

Riding beneath the great gates the Grand Master led his charge into Fal Dara.

Opening her eyes, Elizabeth felt a cold, wet cloth upon her head. Sitting up, she grabbed it off as it fell and looked down as the blanket fell from her and she sat in only her shift. How had she gotten here? The last thing she remembered, she was sitting across from Andular at dinner. Oh god… Oh bloody god… she had passed out! And what was worse, he had undressed her!

Jumping up from the bed, she ran to the mirror and started looking at her shift. Could he have seen any of the marks? The few on her back would have been covered by her hair, and the shift was high enough he couldn’t have seen the marks. Thank goodness… what would she had said if he had seen? Oh, don’t worry about those, they are from my MARRIAGE?

Falling back onto the bed, she pulled the blanket up to her chin and rolled onto her side away from the door. This was going to be harder than she thought. It wasn’t going to be as simple as hiding from him and having occasional dinners… she would have to actually deal with him. But until the point in time she had to, she would avoid him for as long as she could… or at least give him the silent treatment.

Waking up the next morning, on which they were docking, she began placing her items back into her bags. It took a few minutes and when they were ready, she got dressed and went onto the deck. Andular was getting the horses ready and she watched him watch the horses unload. “A fine day for travel Aes Sedai,” he called to her, but she simply nodded and tried to look away.

Once again, they were riding hard for Fal Dara. Perhaps it was he that pushed them because he wanted to make time, or perhaps it was she trying to escape him. Whoever it was that pushed them, she thanked the light to escape him… She did not trust him, and that would not be changing in the near future.

Before long, they were passing people who were also on the way to Fal Dara. The stone walls appeared a few minutes later and she was in awe at how large it was. “Tell me Aes Sedai have you ever been to this great city?” Ignoring him, she rode on, ready to escape him. “Tonight we will dine in style.” Oh light, she has to dine with him again.

They rode into the city and Andular led her to the palace. Their horses and bags were attended to as Elizabeth took the letter that Cavana had sent her with for the King of Sheinar. Ignoring Andular, Elizabeth followed the guard into the palace and into the throne room.

The finery of the Sheinarian court was breathtaking compared to the Novice and Accepted Quarters she had seen for so long. Almost forgetting herself, she giggled softly then put her Aes Sedai face on. Shifting her cloak, she let the hood fall down and pulled her hair over her shoulder. Oh light, she hoped she wouldn’t mess up.

Curtsying before the rulers of Sheinar, she felt Andular beside her as he bowed. “Elizabeth Sedai, of the Yellow Ajah,” she said as she introduced herself. The king nodded as she brought her letter up to him. ”You and your warder are always welcome in the gates of Fal Dara, Aes Sedai.

Elizabeth stiffened at the King’s words. Warder? Andular was not her GAIDIN! But she would not correct the king. “Thank you, my lord. I would like to request the use of your libraries and the study of your infirmaries.” He nodded his head, not even reading the letter but returning it. “You may have use of all you need. Your rooms are already in preparation and should be fine soon, so if you will follow the guard, they will lead you to the women’s quarters.”

Women’s quarters… she would be away from him. Thank the light, she was safe. Curtsying one more time, she bid farewell and followed the guard. Upon arriving at the women’s quarters, she turned to Andular and bid farewell. He tried to speak of dinner, but she told him simply that he should send a note and they would talk later.

Running into the women’s quarters, she disappeared in through the door she was directed to and shut the door. Falling onto the bed, she closed her eyes, ready to be free. A knock came from the door and Elizabeth got up and went to it. However, no one was there. The knock came again and she turned around to see a door. Going to it, she opened. And standing there was him.

After being shown to his room Andular removed the bastard sword from his back and hung it over the large chair next to a fireplace. To say this trip so far had been strange was an understatement. Elizabeth Sedai had an obvious problem with men or was it just himself. Light he could not think of anything he had done to warrant her treating him like a man who could channel.

The wood in the fireplace crackled as he unpacked his things and used the wash basin to splash water on his face. Exiting the room he knocked on Elizabeth’s door and waited. After several moments the door opened slowly and the hesitant face of his charge peered out.

“Will you be wishing to dine with me tonight Aes Sedai?” Her pale face grew even paler if possible and she shook her head. Opening her mouth she let out a small squeak before answering. “I will be busy with the library and will let you know if I need you.”

Without another word she closed the door on him. “Burn that woman she is going to make this trip as difficult as possible.”

The remainder of the afternoon found Andular visiting people in the palace and talking about times past. It was good to be home and the warm conversation and good ale helped him to forget about his troubles with the Aes Sedai. Sitting with a cavalry officer talking about trolloc activity along the blight until late in the night the big man finally excused himself.

Placing a hand over his mouth he yawned. The castle halls were empty at this hour and he decided to find his way to the bath houses on the lower level. Pushing open the big oak doors he breathed in the steam from the great cement pools full of water. No one else was there of course and stripping off his clothes and tossing them in the corner he eased himself down into the hot water.

The weariness of the journey soaked out of him as he lay there with his head propped up against the side of the bath with his eyes closed. It was very peaceful and tranquil watching the swirling steam hover over the placid waters. Letting his head slip under the water to his nose Andular thought he might fall asleep. A faint noise brought his eyes open and to his surprise Elizabeth was peering into the room. Obviously relived at something she walked in wearing a soft bathrobe. Stopping at the edge of the water she still had not seen him and Andular doubted this could come to any good. Before he could rise and say anything though she let the robe slip off of her and fall to the floor at her feet.

The Aes Sedai’s pale skin glistened as the steam warmed it and he could not help but notice her soft curves. It was then he noticed scars marring the surface of her smooth skin and not small ones at that. Light had the woman been in a battle? Elizabeth began easing herself into the pool and Andular sat up.

“Good evening Aes Sedai.”

The shock on her face was obvious and her cheeks burned red just before she lost consciousness and began to fall. Rushing over he caught her as she fell and eased her down into the water. As he did so he noticed more scars on her back and winced with the pain she must have felt when she received them. Resting her head on the edge of the pool Andular Gently began to drip water on her cheeks with his hand trying to wake her.

“Elizabeth Sedai can you hear me?”

“Will you be wishing to dine with me tonight Aes Sedai?” What in the blasted light? Why was his room next to hers and why couldn’t he just leave her alone? No, it was too early for her to eat with him… she would try it in a week or two. “I will be busy with the library and will let you know if I need you.” She closed the door quickly and ran to her bed, exhausted.

Sleeping all day, she found herself awake when night was falling. A tray a servant brought to her was on her desk and she quickly weaved protection spells around her room so that no one else could enter or hear what was occurring inside. She didn’t know these people so she wanted as much privacy as possible.

Eating the dinner, she was amazed at the rich and sensual flavors of the pie and the wine. If all the food in the Borderlands tasted like this, then she may just stay here as long as she can. As good as food was in Tar Valon, she found something different touched her taste buds. She practically had tingles up her arms!

But it was time for a bath and she was excited about getting the travels of her day off of her body. The only thing that bothered her were the bathhouses… men and women shared them. However, this late at night, she should be safe. Donning her robe, she slipped down the hallways, thankfully seeing no one. Somehow finding herself in the lower levels, she felt the heat of the bathhouse attaching to her skin.

Peering into the room, she saw absolutely no one and heard nothing. Slipping in quietly, she shut the door, ready to bathe. Taking a glance down, she let out a sigh at her scars. Her arms were marked up and her legs were scarred up terribly. The mark on her back hurt slightly as she pulled her hair up and it just made the scar across her stomach look larger. Slipping a foot in slowly, she sank into the water, ready to feel weightless.

“Good evening Aes Sedai.”

Looking at him in shock, she felt herself grow dizzy. He was staring at her naked and there was nothing she could do about it. And the world was dark. The last thing she felt was his arms around her in a way that was far from appropriate. “Elizabeth Sedai can you hear me?”

Opening her eyes, she felt water on her cheeks and his body around hers. Bare skin was meeting bare skin and she could feel curves and contours of him that scared her and excited her. It had been over 30 years since she had felt a man’s body against hers and while she was worried memories of Edwyn would flash through her mind, she instead saw Andular’s smiling face above her.

“What… what are you doing here?” she asked quietly. He laughed softly and she felt the warmth return to her entire system. ”Taking a bath Aes Sedai,” he said warmly. She almost felt giddy the way he was smiling at her and holding her.

“Elizabeth,” she said gently, a smile slipping onto her face for a moment. “Call me Elizabeth.” He nodded softly and looked at her oddly. ”Elizabeth then,” he agreed.

It was then that she realized how truly naked they were and how her entire body and secrets were displayed before him. Blushing softly, she pulled away from him and went to the other side of the bath. Sitting on the bench across from him, she brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. It was an uncomfortable silence but she quickly found a way to be rid of him. “Are you leaving soon or did you just arrive?”

Elizabeth’s change in attitude was confusing to say the least as she moved off to the other side of the bath. Light the woman would not so much as give him the time of day and now she wanted him to call her by her first name?

Well Aes Sedai were what they were and if she wanted to strange it was not for him to question. Sinking back into the water he drank in the sight of her soft curves.

“I just arrived Elizabeth and I must say the waters are washing away the weariness of our journey.”

With her legs pulled up to her chest Andular knew the woman was self conscious and he supposed those scars covering her delicate skin were the reason. He wanted to ask her about them but struggled to find a way to go about it.

The steam from the bath filled the chamber as Elizabeth watched him with curiosity in her sparkling eyes. For his part it was all Andular could not to drink in the woman’s form with his eyes.

An akward silence hung in the air for several moments until he found a bar of soap.

“Elizabeth may I wash your back?”

He thought the woman squeaked before she cleared her throat and agreed.

Turning her back to him Andular floated over and began to lather up her back and felt Elizabeth shiver beneath his hand. Something had made her mistrusting of men he realized and he hoped he could figure out what.

After lathering up her back he took a chance and spoke. “If it would not be too forward Elizabeth can I ask you how you came to have these scars on your beautiful skin?”

Glancing away as she asked the question, she tried to hide her blush and at the same time not curse at herself aloud. What was he doing to her and why was she responding? Her eyes drifted to the water between them and she saw something out of the corner of her eye that made her previous blush seem to be a light freckle in comparison to the new color framing her face. It was wrong for them to be in the baths together, no matter what the customs of this land were. It was wrong for her to be naked with any man, and she was surely intruding upon his lover or some such by sharing the water with him. But why would he come here if he had a lover? Surely she would have come along, so there must not be a lover. But why was she worrying about who shared his bed in the first place? It was all very confusing to Elizabeth.

“I just arrived, Elizabeth, and I must say the waters are washing away the weariness of our journey.” She looked up and stared into his eyes just a few seconds before looking at her knees. The glance was there for just a moment, but it was all the time she needed to see the want in his eyes. He seemed to be drinking her in and his smile was cheeky yet respectful. He couldn’t get enough of her, the way he was staring, and if she hadn’t already been naked then she would have felt so. In fact, it felt like he was now stripping her naked emotionally as well.

Her eyes slipped to her knees and she stared at them as she thought. It had been years since she had seen a man naked, and now she was seeing one that was gorgeously handsome. His hard chest was chizzled out and tan. His arms were strong and the scars light. He had a hard face with a ready smile that seemed to appear just for her. He was all in all what the Accepted had called a “Yummy Man,” but was that indeed what she wanted him to be to her? A yummy man? But why did they have to be anything at all?

“Elizabeth, may I wash your back?” She jumped from her thoughts at the sound of his voice and before she could stop herself, she was saying yes and turning her back to him. The X across it tingled slightly, as did the few stab marks around it. Her hair she threw over her shoulder so as to keep it out of his way and she closed her eyes quickly, squinching them. It had been years since anyone had touched her, and the private placing of his hands would be the first since Edwyn. The difference was, Edwyn touched her in hate and Andular touched her in love. Well, not really love, but certainly with more care than her former husband had ever felt for her.

She felt something on her back, warm and soft, and she gasped as he rubbed gently. Every ounce of skin on her back seemed covered in goosebumps and she had to purse her lips together to keep the moan from parting her them. Not only was it sensual, it was also the first human touch of caring that she could remember. Trying to keep from melting in his touch, she dug her short nails into her knees. Warm, exciting bursts and sensations pulsed through her body with every passing moment and she knew that this was indeed bliss.

“If it would not be too forward Elizabeth can I ask you how you came to have these scars on your beautiful skin?” Ready to turn around and rebuke him, she thought about his words. He had said she had beautiful skin… Her skin was far from beautiful. It was pasty white with the scars etched across it, almost haunting. She should be tanner like the other girls, and mark free. But how could she yell at a man that had just given her a compliment.

‘Breathe Elizabeth, just answer the question as much as an Aes Sedai as possible,’ she thought to herself. Taking in a deep breathe, she purred to herself for a moment before answering. “If you thought the question to be forward, then why did you ask?” She felt his hand tremble slightly and she continued. “But if you truly wish to know, then I shall tell you.”

Turning to look at him, she caught his hands in hers and stared at them for a moment, her body slightly towards him as they sat in the bath. Blue eyes met brown ones and she tried to remember to breathe and grant herself courage. “But I do not know if you understand me well enough to accept my story, nor do I know if you will treat me like a toddler or a hag once you learn my past.”

He looked about to speak but she shook her head slightly. “I shall however, tell you this. There was a man that thought he could have all the power in the world from abuse and control. He took a precious flower and beat it under his feet every way imaginable. However, the flower fought back, and the scars he left would never leave the flower. He won every battle, but she eventually won the war. The end result was a shallow grave for my husband, and a lifetime of scars for me.”

She turned away from him then and returned her arms to where they had been, around her knees. He seemed to be in shock and she knew that there was no real response to hand to that. However, she had just given him what he wanted, and it was his move again. For some reason, their relationship was almost a game of stones.

The edge in her voice was hard as she explained how she had come by the scars and how she had repaid the man. For a moment Andular did not know how to respond or if he even should. The skin on her back glistened as drops of water ran down it into the water. Sighing he took the bar of soap in his hand and set it on the edge of the bath before sliding back down into the water watching her.

Elizabeth must have felt his eyes on her because she crossed her arms more tightly about her knees.

“Well it sounds to me the man got better than he deserved in the end.” Elizabeth peered quickly glanced at him before looking away.

“I don’t have much use for someone who tries to take advantage on someone they think weaker than themselves Elizabeth. I am pleased you managed to show him the folly of his ways in the end.”

Staring at her pale scared skin Andular felt a tingle of desire and quickly let his head slip beneath the water and scolded himself. She was a pleasant on the eyes but he knew better than to look at Aes Sedai like that.

Smoothing his wet hair back with his hands he gave Elizabeth a wry smile as he picked up the bar of soap.

“Elizabeth could I bother you to return the favor and lather up my back? I would be most grateful.”

Without waiting for an answer he turned his back to her and waited.

“I must thank you for bringing me along on this trip it has been good to be home and your company has been most enlightening. If you would have time I would be glad to give you a guided tour.”

  • 2 weeks later...

His move was a simple one- a pause and a stare, nothing more. He slid back into the water and she kept her back to him, afraid to turn and stare him in the eyes. Strange things happened to her when she looked a man in the eyes, expeccially this one. ”Well it sounds to me the man got better than he deserved in the end.” Yes… yes he did. He deserved far worse than how he did end, but that was a long time ago and at least he had met his end before she had begun her new life.

“I don’t have much use for someone who tries to take advantage on someone they think weaker than themselves Elizabeth. I am pleased you managed to show him the folly of his ways in the end.” The folly of his ways… what a way to put a man raping and abusing his wife. And to show him that through death? Elizabeth still felt a murderer at times, even though it was in self-defense.

He pushed his hair back from his face as she looked at him and gave her a simple smile. Light could it make her melt. He was lucky indeed that she was so new to men, for she may have decided him rude and improper with his smiles and those eyes. Oh how those eyes were melting her…

“Elizabeth could I bother you to return the favor and lather up my back? I would be most grateful.” He turned away from her and she looked at the bar of soap beside him. She felt her entire body freeze still and just stared at him for a moment before closing her eyes and trying to breathe. ”…I would be glad to give you a guided tour.”

Oh what had he been talking about? “Uh, certainly. That sounds wonderful.” What had she agreed to? Looking at the bar of soap, she slipped towards him in the water, trying to relax and let her troubles wash away. Her skin was still tingling and warm from where his touch had just been and she longed to have his hands return.

“Picking up the bar of soap, she lathered up a nearby washcloth and held it over his back for a moment. Trying to tell herself it was only proper she return the faver, she placed the washcloth on his back softly and rubbed it from one shoulder blade to the other. Her touch was light and small, and she scrubbed the entire, majestic thing.

Setting down the cloth, she cupped water in her hands and let it spill down. As she finally cupped enough water onto it, she forgot her place and reached out her hands gently, touching his back and running her fingers down it. He seemed to stop breathing and moving, but she didn’t even realize it was he she was touching until she heard what sounded like a moan.

Jumping, she pulled away from him and floated to the other side of the bath. Slowly, he turned around to look at her, and she sat on her hands, ignoring the fact she was completely naked before his eyes. Should she run? Should she stay? She just touched a man improperly and he seemed to have enjoy it. What was more, she had just enjoyed it! Oh, what to do!
