Aemon's Field and Emond's Field

Featured Replies

Ok, I put this in the old forums, but too late to be put in the new ones and I don't know how many people are still active in there, so I'll put it in here too.

I'm doing a reread of the series, and am about 1/3 of the way through tEotW.  I noticed in Moiraine's history of Emond's Field speech that it used to be refered to as Aemon's field.  I was thinking this was the name evolving over time as the history was forgotten.  Any ideas?

Yep, it was.

One of Jordan's main themes: The wheel of time turns and ages come and pass, leaving memory that turns to legend, legend turns to myth and even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth comes again. (on top of the previous boards)

Just on a smaller scale.

Say 'Aemon's'.  If you pronounce it with a long A it almost sounds like 'Edmond's'.  I was actually considering that too, and that was my conclusion.  They forgot how to spell, because they were a farming community that didn't really need to write, and eventually the pronunciation altered alightly and the spelling went with it.

isnt it just phonetical farmer accent for aemon's...i dont know how well that works with the american accent though?

Oh I never thought about that.... and it doesn't have to be like an American accent, they could have their own accent that makes it sound similar.  That's an interesting prospect.
