Books Four and Five started the trend of longer Harry Potter Books. It demonstrates the transition the story goes through as they tend to deal with darker, deeper and slightly more adult themes. However, some people find these books a turn off. Why is this? Is it the length or the fact that Harry spends all of OotP being angsty?  ;) What do you think? Do you like them or do you prefer others in the series?

I think that a major part of the reason some find them a turn off is that many people still view the books as "kids' books."  Many parents don't feel their kids are ready to read about darker, more mature themes.  Another reason might have to do with the fact that major characters begin dying around that point in the series.  Some people read to get as far away from reality as they can, so they don't like having to deal with depressing deaths while they read.

 

I always thought the series got more exciting around this point.  It became more complex and suspenseful.  Yes, I cried over the deaths of major characters, but I cry at books and movies all the time.  If I don't cry at one, that's often a sign I wasn't emotionally involved in it, and I like to be emotionally moved by fiction books and other creative arts.

Granted, he is a bit angsty in the later books but we have to remember he's a teenager . . . it goes with the territory!  ;)

 

As for the books getting darker, well Voldemort is getting stronger.  As his strength grows, the danger grows so there is a lot more "darkness" to the story.  Especially when the good guys, whom we've come to know and love, get killed by Voldemort or his followers (or alleged followers) . . .
