The Hobbit turns 70

Featured Replies

Someone else posted this over on Wotmania, but The Hobbit's 70th anniversary just passed. It was published on 21 September 1937. More here.

I first read The Hobbit in 1995, a few months after reading The Lord of the Rings. I was a bit older than its intended audience (I was 16 at the time) but quite enjoyed it. A bit like the Rings it starts off very jovial and gets a bit more serious (although never as serious as Rings) as it goes along. Thorin was a great character, the Bilbo/Gollum face-off was pretty tense and disturbing and the Elven king (later revealed to be Thranduil) was a bit of an arse.

Interesting if the film version ever gets made, although I'm not sure about Sam Raimi as the potential director.

I read it when I was nine. Happy Birthday Bilbo!

I think something spectacular will be in order in 41 years time. 111!!

I remember reading it to my children when it first came out. As for a film, I'm not that bothered about Jackson doing it. I'm sure plenty of other people could do a good job of it.

Wow, it is interesting how long ago I read it. Let's see it was in 1975 that I read it for the first time. I am glad I read it before I read Lord of the Rings. It made it more interesting I think.

As far as Peter Jackson doing the movie, okay. I know why he made the changes to The Lord of the Rings, but some of them were a disappointment.
