It had been a while since Owen had seen Cham, both of them had been busy with other matters since Owen had brought Cham to the Stedding; Cham getting used to his new home and meeting the inhabitants of the Stedding, Owen catching up with his various duties and responsibilities, as well as cleaning his home which somehow always seemed to gather dirt at an incredible rate when he was not around. But this morning Owen had just returned from his usual morning run and as he was jogging back through the Stedding he spied Cham emerging from the infirmary where he lived for the moment. Waving a greeting to him Owen changed direction and made his way over to the young man no doubt a friendly face would be a welcome sight, even if Owen did look a bit strange.

“Good morning Cham I trust you are settling in ok with the Sages and your new surroundings?”

Cham started to reply to Owen’s comments and the two of them started to walk as they talked. It was a cold crisp morning and their breath fogged the air in front of them, but neither were that bothered, but the air was noticeable warmer away from the trees and when they emerged to a large open space the warmth of the early morning sun quickly became apparent. “So what do you have in mind to do this day Owen? I find myself at a loose end and could do with some company if that is not too much of an imposition?”

“Well for once I do not have anything planned, most of my work is finished and my house is as tidy as it ever gets, especially now that I have a house guest.” Owen proceeded to tell Cham about Rhya, of how she had asked to move in with him and was occupying the spare room of his tree house. “It is most strange seeing another person in my house, but it is also comforting in a strange way. Both Ice and Shadow seem to like her as well, especially Shadow. I think she may have found her companion there.”

They continued to talk for a while about inconsequential matters until Cham suddenly asked Owen if he would be prepared to help him continue to learn to use the daggers he had. When they had been journeying to the Stedding Owen had tried to show Cham some of the basics when it came to using daggers he carried. Although there had not been time to do any proper training. “Well I do not see why not, I tell you what lets start with the boring stuff first, care of your weapons. Lets go the barracks and I will show you what you need to do keep your daggers sharp and stop them from breaking.” With that Owen led Cham to the Ranger Barracks and over the next few hours instructed him on how to care for his daggers, how to use a sharpening wheel or stone. How to remove any nicks from the edge of the blade, all manner of things that one needed to do if a persons weapons were not going to fail on them at that crucial moment when they were needed the most.
