Hello folks.  I've been reading WOT since 1996 (I was 23 then - you do the math).  I've been an avid fantasy reader since I was 12 when my father forced me to read Lloyd Alexander's The Book of Three.  I say forced because that's how I used to get punished - grounded until I finished some reading project or other.  I had read Homer, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Poe before I was even a teenager.  I guess I got in trouble a lot when I was little.  In retrospect, it seems like I spent more time reading the dictionary than the texts themselves.

The WOT series has been and still is my favorite fantasy series.  I also very much like The Lord of the Rings (the books) and the Shannara series (especially the first three titles).  Recently, I've been listening to the books on audio as I drive to and from the workplace.  It's amazing how much you forget as the years go by.  Today, this site announced that AMOL is scheduled for Fall 2009.  I'm going to take this time to brush up as much as possible on all the material to date so that when I finally have AMOL in my hands, I can experience the reading as RJ intended it - discovering the answers to the loose ends as they are tied and appreciating whatever twists are to come as they happen.

What a great series this is.  Most of the criticism you read about this series is about how it's taking so long to develop, how there are to many characters and too many plot threads to keep track of, but this is partly what makes this series so rich.  I guess some people get put off when a new plot thread gets introduced because now they are distracted from the old plot threads.  I try to enjoy all the threads for what they are and how they fit into the big picture.  I think the big mistake those that lobby this type of criticism against this series make is that they only focus on the big picture or just the main plot threads.

I don't think we are going to see another WOT like series again anytime soon.  By that I don't mean we won't see other series or books that are obviously influenced by WOT.  We can already see that.  I mean another series that is so rich and deep and put together so well that it stands apart from all the rest despite being influenced by other material.

I can't decide if thats the best punishment idea ever or the worst. Its great cause you get to read some interesting work and become a very linguistic person. On the other hand, it could easily backfire and make a person hate reading. I'm glad that didn't happen for you.

Welcome!! Your parents were great, I wish mine would have punished me that way! I was always an avid reader though.

Especailly the Darkfrined Divison. ;)

Either way, welcome, we have a pretty good community, though some debates get a little heated. Still, I find it great how much we can discuss, and all the answers we can get. I think I've learned more from going over RAW, Luckers, and Cloglord's posts than I did from reading the books. x.x;

Nods being involved in a comunity makes you learn more, it also makes you have to consider looking at things in a new way..personaly what i found very contributing is being on staff, cause you end up constantly runing back to the books *sometimes fuming as you are so sure you read something and end up rereading numerous chapters over several books to find it, and through it while searching like that notice other related things you didnt see before, because you are that hooked on rereading every litle detail sorounding this or that term*

eflynn, Welcome to Dragonmount.

Wow, you have read your way through a few books then, even if it was for punishment. I gues that could have gone either way...it may have put you off books for life, so glad it didn't.

There are a couple of boards where you will find answers to some of those loose ends or just ask if it can't be seen.

The Org part of the sire, is the social area and ahve been themed inline with WoT (Obviously)

I would recommend the Wolfkin, we are a friendly bunch with the theme of Nature. We are also the home of TQ and Chilli and are sure to give you a warm welcome like no other :D

Below the Orgs are the Divisions and thats where the role playing is found.

Wherever you go be sure to have fun... ;D

Hola!

Welcome, I am in the same boat as you only a bit different. I am a returning member from long ago... okay only 4 yrs. Anyhow I wanted to tell you to enjoy and have fun. I think you will find that most people here are always up for a good discussion. If you find your imagination running wild and need to release it in a powerful need stop on in to the role playing boards, always a treat. *gotta do some promotion work here* If you get a chance check out the Aiel boards, we would be happy to have another creative mind hanging around. But most of all Have fun!!!!!!

Wow, thanks everybody.  What a great response and welcome.  I didn't think many people would read these new user posts.  This must actually be as close-knit a community as it seems.  I will take your suggestions.  It looks like there is a LOT to do here and all of it is WOT themed.  This is a really cool site!

Welcome to DM!

There's a whole lot of us who hang around here to meet new people, as it is you guys who keep this place going. Well, you and us, the older members! Without either, there wouldn't be a DM!

I do like your dad's punishment! I wish I had found Homer earlier than I did! But I have also had the joy of reading his work in the original language! And the English translation really don't match his writing!

DM has a lot to offer! It sounds like the book discussions could be up your street! It'll keep you on your toes between now and Autumn 2009!

However, there are several other things to do! Take a look at the Band of the Red Hand ORG! We are DM's very own music and travel ORG, so come on by to discuss these! We are also a great way to meet new friends who share a love of the books. We're an easy going, fun loving group of people, with much to offer, whether it be simple posting, brawling, getting into trouble or much much more. And we also give you the chance to become an Infantry Blademaster, a Knight of the Cavalry or an Assassin of the Archers. There is something for everyone!

But whatever you do at DM, have fun! :)

Wow, I wish my parents would punish me like that....  In fact, I read so much that when I'm grounded I'm not allowed to do any pleasure reading...which basically means I'm grounded from books.  Thank goodness I hardly get in that kind of trouble...

Welcome to Dragonmount!  You'll really love this site; it's amazing!  I suggest the Aiel Org or the Illuminators Org (this one's for the real artistic types).  And, of course, the most popular Org is the White Tower, and I think you should definitely check it out.

*brushes hands together*

Well, there you have it.  My work is done here for now.
