Hello All,

I've actually lurked on this site more than a few times, but finally decided I should sign up.  I never know what to say in hello posts, and it's been a while since I had too!

Let's see, a little about me.  I'm a major WoT fan and have corrupted at least three people to the series.  Still working on a few others.  I write as a hobby and am a ML for the yearly nanowrimo in the Dayton, Oh area.  Over the last few years I've also gotten into costuming (actually, I was dragged kicking and screaming into it, but have found I really like it).  I'm lucky enough to have several friends in that arena now and we are ever expanding our knowledge.  We've just embarked on vacuum forming and in the next couple of years hope to get a forge going.

I posted several pictures to the gallery that depict our foray into Wheel of Time costuming.  We had been talking about making some to attend the Renn Fest or go to the fantasy ball in.  After the passing of RJ, we decided we would really do it this year as our tribute to him.

So that's probably enough for now.  I look forward to meeting new folks and getting to know yall!

I'm curious... what exactly do you do for costuming?

Hi there,

I guess many people would rank costuming in with Cosplay.  Essentially, we choose characters from a book, movie, video game, etc, that we like or think will be challenging and then make the costume.  Sometimes this is straightforward, other times we have to come up with a design on our own.  For instance with the Asha'man costumes we made to go to Ren Fest... the books aren't overly descriptive over their exact cut.  So after much debating, we settled on the idea that RJ might be describing something similar to his Citadel days uniform and started with a civil war era uniform as a base.  We looked at lots of fan art as well, this site included before deciding on how we would make them.

We've also gone to Star Wars events in Jedi Costumes, Pirate Day activities, and being friends with the head of Harry Potter-Ohio I've found myself at several book release events in costume to interact with the kids.  Hope that helps on the explanation of a strange and time consuming hobby!  haha!

That sounds pretty cool, I do re-enacting myself, which isn't the same as costuming, but we do have to have historically accurate costumes for the events. Costumes are pretty much key for it.

Anyways, welcome to DM, I'm glad you finally joined. I'm the newbie mod here, so if you've got questions, don't be afraid to send me a PM asking them. Or ask them here, your choice.

The closest I ever got to costuming was covering myself in food dye and fake blood (actually pasta sauce) for the Brisbane Zombie Walk. Good times.

Welcome to DM! And since you sound like a creative type you should head on down to the Illuminators Org. We cover everything from writing to baking. There are some great collaborative projects going on as well. There's also a critique circle that you might be interested in (I keep meaning to submit something, heh). And a world-building project which goes through periods of creative amazingness and (as now) periods of inactivity. Anyway, Illuminators! I highly recommend it. Jump in anywhere.

And finally a plug for the Organised Games board, because I'm starting a Newbie Mafia Game there that I'm having trouble finding Newbies for. Any chance you're curious about that? It's a heap of fun. Please? *starts steering Deivyd away by the arm, looking over her shoulder* I promise you'll like it.

Welcome to DM Deivyd,

Have fun, though I'm sure I don't need to tell you that ;D

I agree with GoodGrief, the Illuminators sound right up your street. And I would also recommend the Mafia games...they are fun, if not addictive :D

I would also like to recommend The Wolfkin Org. We are the Nature Org, and love all things nature. We have a monthly newspaper which we do and are always looking for writers to help with that one. We are also the home of TQ and Chilli (TQ= Tequila), and are a very friendly bunch. We would be sure to give a very warm and unique welcome. We would love to see you.

I would also recommend the Band of the Red Hand. Where they have Brews, brawls, Jousts, fun and even our own Game. So pop along and have a look at what you see there.

So wherever you go be sure to have fun, and I hope top see you round the Boards.

;D

Now if you couold just give a few tips on how you got your friends into WoT, mine are just not interested full stop. :(

If you like dressing up, may I suggest the Seanchan org?  I mean we don't really have anything to do with dressing up unless you count our monthly cross dressing theme (and really I am the only one that participates in that for some reason).  If you have any interested in movies, TV or gaming... well... we cover that as well.

Enjoy yourself!

Thanks for the welcome!  I'll try to wind my way through the many orgs as I can.  And I'm going to try to avoid the games for the next month as I'm about to start my qualifiers and don't need the extra addiction, I mean distraction!  But feel free to harass me in Feb about the games. :)

Welcome to DM! :)

It sounds like you have lots of fun with the customing! And talking of fun, do check out the ORGs in your own time, but take any extra long time with the Band of the Red Hand ORG, DM's very own music and travel ORG. It's jam-packed full of fun, with lots of different things going on to interest everyone!

Good luck with the qualifiers!

And enjoy whatever you do at DM! :) But make sure you join the Band of the Red Hand ORG at some stage! ;)
