We don't know that the AS from the AoL (prior to the opening of the bore in any case) didn't follow the Way as well.

It seemed awfully inportant to Solinda in TSR that "The Way" be kept by those being sent out.  Obviously, since they were required for combat, channelers would not have been able to keep the Way.  Maybe that's why it was so important that the Aiel abide by it for them.
