I noticed something strange about the Aiel that I think must be an error or inconsistency on the part of RJ.

 

The Aiel refer to people by both their first and last names, and via Aviendha POV's, we know that she feels awkward just calling someone by their first name, as per Aiel custom, you only do that when you're really close to somebody.

 

But the thing is...Aiel don't actually have last names. 

 

It could be a custom that just refers to wetlanders, but since they're so rare in the Waste, I doubt any of them have ever stuck around long enough to get buddy buddy with an Aiel.

 

Anyway, that's just a little something that finally jumped out at me after three or four rereads :p

Aiel refer to each other by their full names. Aviendha's full name is Aviendha. To Aiel, Rand's full name is Randalthor. Calling him Rand would be like calling him by a 'honey' name.  'Avi' would be hers, I guess.

Ah, that does make sense.

 

I guess that's what I get for viewing things like a wetlander.

Aiels' full name has something to do with their sep and clan.  I would Imagine it's something like the Saldean name thing.  e.g. Diera Ni'galin Ti'Bashere or something like that.

That was his point, they don't have first names, they just have names.  The part about 'Avi' was just an example, since we've never seen anybody in the books actually refer to her as such.
