So all along I swear I was under the impression that Rand was taller than Lan, but Lan was broader shouldered and thicker - I swear I read that somewhere in the earlier books.. I am pretty sure in the first book (but I cannot find book 1 - I might have loaned it out).

BUT I was reading CoT, and in chapter 23 Cadsuane describes Rand like so; ". . .almost as tall and broad-shouldered as Lan. . ."

 

If what I was originally thinking (hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong) could this just be Cadsuane's opinion?

I believe it's her opinion, though for one reason or another Cadsuane can't get his height right; I have my little pet theory as to why. And Rand is actually not taller than Lan, they are the same height.

 

In the GH, the first chapter, when Rand and Lan are practising on top of that tower, Rand clearly describes them in his thoughts; "as young as he was, Rand was taller than most men, but Lan stood just as tall" , and he goes on to say that Lan was not quite as broad in the shoulders as Rand, though he (Lan) was more heavily muscled. This is from memory, so I might have it wrong.

 

Furthermore, Perrin describes Rhuarch as being as tall as Lan [the DR, "Rhuarc towered over her (Moiraine) as much as the man who came in after her, her Warder" (approximation)], and then later on (the book after LoC, while they are standing amidst the dead at Dumai's Well) he describes Rhuarc as being the same height as Rand.

Small addition: the DR scene is when Perrin finds a bload-soaked Rand in his chambers, after the later fought his reflections.

It's interesting that Cadsuane comments he's not as tall as Lan, because what you normally find happens is that if two men are the same height but one is more heavy set (Lan) and one is thinner, the thinner one seems to look taller.

 

If that's the case though, sod Moridin, swap bodies with Lan!

Then he'd end up married to Nynaeve.

 

I don't see him wanting that. :D
