Question on Padan Fain in Winter's Heart

Featured Replies

I just finished Winter's Heart and I am confused about the fight between Padan Fain and Rand. At the end of the fight there seems to be an illusion of some sorts, with the two people that Padan killed coming back. The thing that confuses me is, why or how did that illusion come. I just started Crossroads of Twilight, so if the answer is in that, please just say to read on. Thanks ahead for any help on this.

How did Padan make the illusion? The only thing I can think of is that his way of doing so is from the knife, because he doesn't have the ability to touch the source and Rand would have been able to see it if he did.

Fain has some odd powers, some of which he does not even understand.  I get the impression he doesn't know all that he can do.  I don't believe Fain's strange powers have anything to do with the source.

Fain was given some abilities by the DO. Later he got more when he hooked up with Mordeth. Fain is truly "More than meets the eye".

If you remember correctly, Mordeth appeared quite different when leading the boys to the treasure that he wanted carried out of Shadar Logoth than after he sprung the trap.

This has nothing to do with the true source.  It has alot to do with Aridhol and how it became Shadar Logoth.

??? I can't remember either illusion...

He's talking about the thick fog that appeared where the tendrils of fog came to life and starting killing people.....a distraction for Fain to try and kill Rand- this is the part of the book where he cut Rand with his dagger and he almost died.

That was Fain!? I was wondering who was responsible, i thought it was just another 'bubble of evil'...Damn! He's stronger then i thought.

The fog in ACOS was a bubble of evil, not Fains doings.

The second illusion Angel of Death mentions happens in TGH, unless I have forgotten one that would be the room with the flies Rand encounters while chasing Fain.

Ahhh, that one. But wasn't that using the source or something? Because Rand cut the weaves, didn't he?

No and no. Fain used his non Source related powers to set a trap, and Rand channeled to break it, but he couldn't cut the weaves as there were no weaves to break.
