Kate had watched as her mother packed her things and ready to go out on a job.  The aura was darker than usual and it took Kate a while to figure out why.  The death was radiating both in wards and outwards of her mother.  Meaning her mother was going out to kill but something bad was going to happen and she was going to die.  Kate wasn't sure what to do yet.  Her mother didn't know about her sight yet, and she also didn't know that she knew what her mother did for a living much less how much the darkness enveloped her.  Aiden and Kate hadn't told her yet either that they were darkfriends but they would have to soon, they needed training and with Demus not here they had no one else to turn to, but that was another matter.

Kate looked from her mother to the door and tried to think of a way for her to stop this.  But Kate couldn't think of anything.  Her mother left the house and Kate watched as she readied Tain Cor and headed out of the ranch.  The visions grew stronger as she rode way but they soon faded when her mother was too far away to make anything but a blob out.  Kate paced the house trying to think of some way to save her mother but her mind was blank.

It wasn't until that evening that a solution presented itself to her.  A knock came at the door ...

Yrean had been up since before dawn helping to clear away the worst of the over night snowfall, it was hard back breaking work, but that brought it’s own satisfactions and pleasures and Yrean was pleased to see that the people in Fairhaven were glad to have his assistance and that helped Yrean feel more at home here. So far he had not been sure if he had made a mistake by moving to Fairhaven, but slowly the towns folk had started to get used to having him around and had become more open with him, so much so that after they had finished shovelling the snow, Yrean had three offers for a hot meal. Thanking everyone for their heartfelt hospitality, Yrean explained that he wanted to make his way to Cari’s place to check up on her and the children, especially with the recent death of Nathan, Yrean knew they would be short handed on the ranch.

Stopping off at his shop to replace his sodden boots and collect his heavy wool cloak, Yrean was soon out on the road leading to the Ranch, his progress slowed by snow drifts, but it was easy enough to bypass them and soon Yrean saw the low silhouette’s of the houses on the ranch.

Yrean made his way directly to Cari’s house and knocked on the door. As he waited for Cari to open it, Yrean glanced around at the other houses noticing that all the snow that could be cleared had already been cleared. “Good morrow Kate, I be looking for Cari, be she here?”

Kate was slightly disappointed to see Yearn.  Not that she wasn't glad to see him but she really wanted her mother to come back home.  "No she's not here she just left on a call."  Kate wasn't sure what to call it.  Someone had left her a message in a hiding spot and Cari answered it.  It wasn't a call, no one yelled for her but it had the same implications.

Kate started to pace forgetting that the door was wide open and Yearn was standing outside.  She was nervous and she wasn't sure exactly what to do.  What could she do, it was winter and it was could and she was just ten years old.

Aiden yelled from his room.  "Close the door it's getting cold in here."  Kate looked up and saw that Yearn was looking at her curiously.  She walked over to the door and closed it and continued her pacing.

Kate

Yrean was not surprised to have the door opened by Kate, he had known the girl for only a short time, but she seemed a resourceful type not taken by flights of fancy, although she was prone to saying the strangest things However, Yrean was surprised, although he hid it well, to hear that Cari had left the Ranch without mentioning anything to him. Although she was very secretive, and Yrean was certain that she had her reasons for being so secretive, he was a little taken aback that Cari had not bothered to mention this trip to him.

"Close the door it's getting cold in here."

Before Yrean could comply with Kate’s words, the girl had swept by Yrean and closed the door herself. She was right about the temperature and Yrean resolved to fix that problem first. He knew there was a woodpile at the rear of the house and it was to this that he quickly made his way and after knocking the snow from the logs Yrean went back into Cari’s house and started to bank the fire.

It was not long before the fire started to give off increased warmth and it was then that Yrean turned to talk to Kate.

“Be you feeling like telling me where you be thinking Cari…..your mother be going to?” it was slightly awkward for Yrean, holding conversations with a child was not something he was used to. He did know not to sound condescending and he did his best not to, hoping to gain at least a modicum of Kate’s trust. “I be thinking you be knowing I be Cari’s friend. So if she be in any trouble I be wanting to be there for her. So it be an advantage knowing where she be going.”

OOC:  It was Aiden who said close the door :P not kate

Kate hadn't noticed Yearn come and go or him stoking the fire either.  She was lost in her own preoccupied thoughts, but when Yearn took to talking to her she heard the word trouble and it finally dawned on her that Yearn could do exactly what she needed doing.

Kate stopped her pacing and looked up almost as white as the snow outside.  "Mother's in trouble."  Kate didn't move, but she felt a mile away.  "She didn't say where she was going, but she's in trouble, I saw it.  She's going to die if you don't save her."  The last part she hadn't seen, but she knew he would try if it was the last thing he did.  He was an odd sort.  He didn't even know that her mother was probably better off dead anyway, at least according to most peoples values in life, but he loved her.  He was a good fighter he could definitely save her.

"You must go soon, she left a few hours ago, heading to town.  Probably Cairhein after that.  She'd follow the roads."  Kate looked up scared.  "You just have to."

Kate

Kate’s pleading left Yrean absolutely no room but to do what she was asking, almost insisting. However, Yrean did not need forcing to do what he would have done anyway but silently he cursed Cari and her stupid stubbornness and her leaving the children on their own here. They would be safe, he knew that, but her place was with them not running around doing Light knows what.

Yrean’s first task was to question Kate further, trying to prise out any information or details that she might have gotten, however Kate had told Yrean all that she could and did not have much to add to what she had already said and confirmed that she did not know her mothers final destination.

Yrean could have screamed out loud at that, but a nagging thought was growing in his mind and that thought provided a possible destination for Yrean, one that he had not thought to see again so soon. It was only a hunch though and Yrean knew that Kate was correct when she said he would have to follow the roads and although he was growing more certain that his guess of the destination was correct, Yrean also knew he could not chance Cari’s life on a hunch.

Before he could leave though, Yrean made sure that someone would check in on the children and that they would have enough heat and food until he and Cari could return.

Yrean opened the door and with one final confirmation that he would do everything he could to find Cari and bring her home safely, Yrean strode out into the show and growing gloom, his stride purposeful his cloak, loose, flapping in the wind.
