Announcement

The Mentoring system has changed completely. There are no more IC Mentors, only OOC Mentors. This means that the Meet the Mentor RP, or any RP referring to Mentors, falls away.

Your OOC Mentors are currently members of Staff. You can contact any of them with your questions or requests.

Here is your list of Mentors:

Just to be clear:

1) You can contact any of the above people. Whomever you see first, or feel most comfortable with, or you think is a dirty idle slacker and needs to be punished ... ;D

2) If you ask anyone else, don't cry because you find out later you got the wrong answer :P

3) If you are currently doing or have done the Meet the Mentor RP, don't panic! It will still count towards your reqs :D

Now, if you have any questions, please ask them here - if the topic goes over 1 page, I'll split it at a later stage :D

Lastly but not least: THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who have been so kind as to Mentor, both IC and OOC, in the past!

  • 10 months later...

Can I ask why the change? Having IC mentors always gave newbies a sure fire RP partner, along with OOC interaction and assistance. (Speaking as someone who had an IC mentor and has had close to a dozen mentees over the years). Not to mention the wonderful IC relationships that grew from initial pairings. Is there a reason for this? It just seems like such a big change with  no explanation or warning. And frankly, I feel a little put out, I had some future rps in mind that would be fun with my new mentee, but of course they will be impossible now, given there are no such thing as mentors anymore.

I'd just really appreciate some more information :).

There will still be such a thing as mentors in the traditional sense of the word - an older, experienced figure who helps/guides/inspires a younger.  It is no longer a requirement that each character have such a figure.  So feel free to plan RPs with the novices and Accepted and develop such a relationship!  It will now be informal (OOC).

My question is why are we bothering to call them OOC mentors at all?  Saying 'go ask the staff!' flows so much better than 'go ask your OOC mentor!' ...

And Rochel is still your little minion Lavinya ... even if it's not official :D

There are a few reasons for the change.

1) Mentoring (or Roommates) does not exist in the Books. We are trying to stick as closely to what would be plausible or a logical extrapolation, based on the WoT books. This includes the relationships between Novices, Accepted and Aes Sedai.

2) The peculiar time loop in which Novices and Accepted RP, means that once a character is raised to the Shawl, they might end up being a 100 years older than the character who was their roommate, or Mentor. You then have a choice of either pretending the relationship never existed (in which case why keep official record of it in the first place? [which incidentally entails quite a bit of work which could be time spent better]), or some of the parties will be forced to put their character at a certain age, whether they want to or not.

3) It has been quite a struggle to find (and keep!) people to be Mentors. I've had to make alternative plans on quite a few occasions when Mentors got sucked into RL (shakes fist at RL) or became unavailable for other reasons. I would like to keep that kind of problem to a minimum, because not only does it lead to frustration on the novice's part, it also means extra work for me.

As to possible IC interaction between Novices, Accepted and Aes Sedai - there are still several Req RPs which necessitate that, for instance classes, the Aes Sedai RP, Novice Life, etc. Take a look at the Reqs for possibilities.

Arath, though "ask the staff" has a nice ring to it, not all staff are or will always be Mentors (it depends on how busy they are). Nor will it always (in the future) be ONLY staff who are Mentors. We've done it this way for now, because at least the Staff are up to date (or should be!) on what the latest reqs and rules are, seeing as we're forever discussing these matters on the staff board.

In the end, the Reqs are for Novices and Accepted, and we wanted to make them as easy and fun and hassle free for them as is possible, whilst still keeping the integrity of what their purpose and the vision of the PSW is.
