Noal and Old Cully...are they the same guy?

They both appeared as characters around the same time.  Ishy did something to Jain Farstrider that made him ashamed.  Now, it looks like Noal is Jain.  Did Ishy compel Old Cully to keep an eye on Matt?

As usual, I don't have any quotes...just gut instinct...blaze away.

Old cully was described with very questionable grooming habits iirc (as well as bad teeth), so it doesn't match.

Noal is used mentioned before he is introduced though.

Old Cully was a beggar in Ebou Dar, and also a high ranking darkfriend. He was the one who ordered the attack on Mat by a gang of "beggars" in ACOS.

Wasn't Old Cully also missing an eye?  Maybe I'm just getting confused by all the eyeless characers though.

Yes, he was missing an eye.

Oh my, Old Cully is Mat from the future, who travelled back in time to stop Mat from doing something horrible in the now! *gasp*

Somewhere in the back of my feeble old brain I'm remembering that the "Old Cully" character kinda ceased to exist just as "Noal" appeared.  Probably nothing to it, though.  Did RJ ever say what it was the Ishy did to Jain Farstrider?

Yes, that was around when Old Cully and his fake beggar crew launched an attack on Mat.  And were promptly dealt with by Mat, Beslan, and the real Beggar's Guild.  We can only speculate as to his fate, but if he did survive, he probably continued operations in Ebou Dar, where he lived.

(no facts...purely speculation):

1. Ishy does his thing to Jain (I don't know what).

2. Jain, under orders from Ishy, goes to Ebou Dar.

3. Jain assumes the identity of Old Cully (in disguise).

4. Old Cully does his thing, unsuccessfully (see post above).

5. Jain still has a mission...not yet completed.

6. Jain abandons the Old Cully disguise.

7. Jain assumes the Noal disguise.

8. Noal "conveniently appears" to scare away Matt's attacker.

(what's wrong with that whole picture?)  ???

9. Noal gains Matt's confidence and accompanies him.

10.  Ishy (now Moridin) has an "inside spy" watching Matt.

I'm out of fingers, so that will have to do.

As stated earlier, blaze away.

(isn't this more fun than watching TV or playing video games?)  ;D

edit:

Which of the forsaken was it that visited Jachim Carridan?  All I remember of the scene is that time froze and who ever he was talking to was shocked when it unfroze because he was elsewhere in the room.  Just wondering if this is a connection to the Old Cully/Ishy idea.  Yes...I am a lazy old fart...I could go look it up...but it's easier and more fun to tax all of your brains than to do my own work.  ;D  (thank you)

Sammael.  I don't think time froze, just that Mili Skane was frozen in place and did not know anything of what happened.

You missed a part. Mat saw Noal way before the point, but he wasn't introduced. ACoS,Ch14 Mat sees Noal (an old man) while looking for Jaichim Carridin.

Then ACoS,Ch17 is a PoV with Jain. He seems to be forgetting something important. This is when he is spying on the BA. The memory thing likely has to do with what Ishy did to him. There is a small chance that this is a flashback type memory that we see with Jaichim when he saw his mission revealed (I am definitely not saying this is what it is though).

In ACoS,Ch28 he is again seen watching over the house with the BA.

Then in WH,Ch16 he finally introduces himself.

In his earlier appearances he is always seen watching and observing other DFs or the BA. I'm 100% sure he isn't Old Cully. There is a chance he might be a DF however, with orders to spy on other DFs.

He lost his wife and changed his named from Jain to Noal. However loss of a loved one is a situation where certain people might be turned to the DO.

So I guess chance he is  DF? Yes. Chance he is Old Cully? No (As others have said the physical characteristics are just wrong, and Mat had seen him before so would of noticed the fact)

GranpaG, Old Cully has no eye and no teeth. Noal/Jain has both. They are not the same person.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the fact that Noal is accompanying Mat and Thom to rescue Moraine is pretty much proof enough that he is not old cully or a darkfriend. At least not willingly. But I don't think he is at all.

OK.

This has just always been there in the back of my mind, so I thought I'd find out if anyone else ever had a similar feeling about the two characters.  Strange things sometimes happen in the world of fantasy.  :)

Thanks for all the responses.
