Jabber is an IM service that uses XMPP, a messaging protocol. The first to implement it, in fact.

 

Google Chat is another IM service that uses XMPP. It came later.

 

The cool thing about XMPP is it allows any server to talk to any other server. You could even download your own, run it in your basement, and still be able to talk to people on Google Chat and Jabber with it.

 

I was in a group that wrote an XMPP server last semester. We never got to the server-to-server communications part, though.
