[MOVIE] Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Remake

Hey folks, Harry here and man do I have the scratchiest head scratcher that I've seen in a long goddamn time. I think just about all of us would be interested in a real theatrical launch of a feature version of the BUFFY character as was lovingly developed and handled by Joss Whedon.

But that's not what they're gonna do.

This new film is being developed with the original directing and producing team of the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER feature - which made all the impact of a shaving cream pie. It's being developed at Vertigo Entertainment, According to Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter which is run by the usually very astute Roy Lee and Doug Davison.

Now - apparently they're not ruling out Whedon coming aboard, but apparently they're taking meetings with a number of writers and Whedon would have to audition like everyone else. It seems Roy Lee is the one that has taken control here. And like I said, he's usually someone that I would trust - it just feels weird to announce before approaching Whedon first. Sort of like when McG and crew announced SPACED before talking with the real SPACED team.

I don't know if I would want to start slapping them every which way regarding continuity, etc... but without Whedon I know they'll instantly be met with a wall of fan hostility, that I doubt any other direction will calm.

So I'm confused...is this dude saying that some other guy is just going to create a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie?

Like, without Whedon's permission?? Doesn't he own the Buffy rights? I mean, it's his idea...

So yeah...still confused.

It sounds like he wants to remake the old Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie that Whedon turned into a tv series.

It was a crap movie, but it DID have PeeWee Herman as a one armed vampire.

Okay, so I did a little bit of reading

A new incarnation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" could be coming to the big screen.

"Buffy" creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.

While Whedon is the person most associated with "Buffy," Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the "Buffy" script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on "Buffy" and its spinoff, "Angel."

Who should play Buffy in the "Vampire Slayer" relaunch?

Megan Fox (Love at first bite)

Kristen Stewart (Knows her vamps)

Jessica Stroup (High school horror)

Amanda Seyfried (She has the pipes)

Teresa Palmer (Ready for the leap?)

The new "Buffy" film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching "Star Trek."

One of the underlying ideas of "Buffy" allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.

The parties are meeting with writers and hearing takes, and later will look for a home for the project. The producers do not rule out Whedon's involvement but have not yet reached out to him.Speaking from Tokyo, Fran Kuzui said the company is constantly approached not only about sequels but theater, video games and foreign remakes for "Buffy." When Vertigo's Lee contacted them, they were intrigued.

"It was Roy's interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us," she said, noting that original exec producer Sandy Gallin also was consulted. "It was based on our respect for what he does, and his particular sensitivity to Asian filmmakers, that we wanted to work with him."

Kuzui, who is prepping do direct a movie in Japan in the fall, added: "Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this."

hehe, TV Guide contacted Joss Whedon for his reaction to them creating a Buffy movie without involving him.

Joss: I hope it's cool.  But it will probably suck, because I'm not doing it.  Idiots.

Fixed.  ;)

Anthony Stewart Head tells USA Weekend that he's one, er, Watcher who won't be Watching the Whedon-less "Buffy" movie that was announced last week.

“I wouldn’t want to see it, no,” Head, best known for his role as Giles on "Buffy", admits. “The Kuzuis didn’t do a great job on the movie the first time around. It was Joss’ script at the age of 19, but they changed a lot of it. They said, ‘Look, we know best and we know how to make this movie,’ and it became quite schlocky and high camp.”

Head recalls the time when he went to audition for the Buffy series because he loved Whedon’s pilot script so much, and his agent advised him to watch the movie to get the tone of the show before his screen test. “So I did and I went, ‘Oh, that’s not it at all.’ I went in and saw Joss and said, ‘I watched the movie last night!’ And he went, ‘Oh. Did ya?’ I just put it out of my mind. The bottom line is if a movie was ever to be made, it should be made with Joss Whedon, whether it’s a retrospective or not. But it would be madness to do it without him. [The Kazuis] have the rights to because they have the rights to the original movie, but it should be interesting to see. It may be a bit like watching a car wreck.”

Here Here.

Aww, I Loved the original!  Of course I love the series even more and I'm as appalled as everybody else about the Kuzuis plans for another movie.  But seriously, when I was a kid, the Buffy movie was the most quoted amongst my friends.  And when I introduce anyone to the Buffy series, I Always make them start with the movie.

The movie was okay, but I use it as a drinking game, mostly. Think I still have the original rules somewhere. Don't know - I just moved, so it could be in the bottom of a stack of story notes.  Don't want to see the new one if it doesn't have Joss or ASH.

I hated the original movie...and it sucks that the same people will be involved in making this re-launch.  That being said, in light of the recent re-launch of Star Trek, which ROCKED my SOCKS off...get your guns ready...cause any Buffy fan might want to shoot me after this...

I'm willing to give this one a chance possibly.  It will depend on what the previews look like.

If Joss gets involved...I'll DEFINITELY be interested.  I'm wishing that they would find a way to make more seasons of Buffy the series...but I know that's not gonna happen:(.

They Are making more seasons of Buffy.  Buffy season 8 has been going for a while now.  Sure, in comic book form, but it's still continuing the saga.  With no studio to approve content and what not.  I mean, do you really think that either Buffy or Angel would have been allowed the threesome dream on TV???  I think not.  I'm happy with it going forward in comic form.  There's more freedom.  And it could potentially go forever.

I prefer canon in the case of Buffy than appropriating a story for the sake of entertainment.  But that's just me.  And I'm admittedly a little silly over my Buffy obsession.

Sorry just had to pop in when I saw this thread as I am a huge Buffy fan. I actually met Anthony Head a couple of years ago and got all starstruck lol!

I am currently in the middle of a Buffy re-watch, and I really can't see anyone else playing Buffy, I think if you had the same concept with a different character then it could work.  :-\

I would love to know what all the characters from the series are up to now though seeing as Sunnydale was distroyed.

Yes...I've got the first 3 volumes in Graphic Novel format...(I'VE NEVER PURCHASED GRAPHIC NOVELS TILL NOW).  Haven't gotten Volume 4 yet, but that's because I tend to wait till there are 3 or so out and then get them all at once on Amazon and get free super saver shipping on them. ;D

I'm reading them and loving them, but for me there is NO substitute for being able to watch something be acted out with visual effects.  Especially if I could have seen the whole Buffy lesbian scene acted out by SMG.  I could almost see it in my head and I was just laughing my ass off.

Alf, I am quite sure there are several here that has seen that particular scene in their heads, over and over again. I sure as hell have ;D

Sorry to bump in here like this, but Buffy is a sore spot for me too, though I'm not so fanstruck that I'll go and see/read everything. But this is just wrong. I thought the rights to a movie expired after some time? Got that idea from the whole Peter Jackson ordeal that he went through with his making the LoTR trilogy.

I saw the original movie years ago, and much forgot how much it sucked so I bought it on play.com and when I watched I was horrified. This is by far the worst possible pilot movie I've ever seen. The 'Buffy' in that movie had more of a teenage boxer wannebe and the rest, well it was just wrong. If that had been the level for the series, no way I'd ever watch it. Would be right up there with the Rich and Shameless (bold and beautiful), days of our lives and other crap stuff like that (personal preference here, obviously).

One thing is certain, I'll not pay a cent to watch this, no matter how good it gets. The author should ALWAYS have first say in things on HIS work.
