Cutting things into thick strips like that is called "frenching". Its a thicker cut than "juiliane" which most people have heard of. So its a short form of "french cut, fried potatoes".

There's also a slight difference between the fries you get in belgium and the fries known as french. Belgian fries are baked. And taste much better.

my whole knowledge of French Fries is that it's $1.25 for a large at my school and $.90 for a small :D
