Major Characters Not Getting a POV

Featured Replies

I am currently re-reading the series before the TGS comes out. I've noticed that some Major Characters never get a point of view Chapter or Passage of any consequence. Most notably Moraine and Lan especially Lan considering he's been around longer. Personally I think it's more to do with RJ's story telling and trying to keep information from the reader.

I dont even think Siuan actually has a POV until Salidar, most of her chapters were from Min's POV after FOH.

Can anyone think of any Major Characters not having meaningful POV's?

Moraine has POV in tGH, tSR and FoH.  We haven't seen anymore since because she's "dead."

Suiane had her first PoV in tDR and has had one in every book afterwords.

That's not true. She has a PoV in NS, TDR, TSR, TFoH, LoC, and KoD. She does not have one in TEotW, TGH, ACoS, TPoD, WH, or CoT.

Characters who have had no PoVs are like Leane, Juilin, Tallanvor, Narishma, Logain, Mazrim, Amys, Rhuarc, Gaul, Chiad, Lini, Berelain, etc.

Characters who had a PoV in like one book for a short period of time and it would be nice if they got more screen time would be like Thom, Bayle, Lan, Slayer, Loial, Galad, Noal, Sulin, Shaidar Haran, Birgitte.

Some people I'd just as soon not have a PoV for. Talanvor? I hate that whole storyline. I even want to slap Gawyn many times, and I really want to like him. Taim would give too much away, I think. I'm sure RJ had his reasons for giving (or not) what he has.

Like another poster, I also would like a POV from Taim.

All the books prove of him is that he dangerous; a POV from him might show on which side he is on and/or show how he got his knowledge and/or show his motives. Those to me are not obvious.

Logain has not had a POV either.  Though to me that does not matter much since he has not turned against any of the main Light-sided characters nor does have many suspicious actions.

I think part of it is RJ not letting us get an inside look on these characters with their personalities, knowledge, etc.  It's also possible (and likely I think) that most of those characters would be more difficult for him to write and might also spoil the book a little bit and I don't just mean info. spoilers.

It would be close to impossible to write an interesting POV from Taim without giving away confirmation that he plays for Team Dark, and at least some serious hints about what he is actually up to. I have great hopes that we will get a POV from him once it is time to officially reveal him as a new Chosen.

Taim's loyalty is still in question?  :o

I reckon its Logain. Its obvious he is significant somehow and he has stepped to the fore yet we have had no PoV from him.

From Logain's discussions with Light-sided people, Logain seems Light-sided.

His viewing might be another indicator that he is (and shall be) Light-sided.  (Darkfriends hardly ever have glory.)

...Im saying I think he is the Major Character that wont get a PoV in TGS...

Depends on what you mean with 'in question'. To the observant reader, it is obvious which team he plays for. But that is because we can reach that conclusion by putting the pieces together, there has yet to be an 'official' confirmation in the books. And there is a difference. If you will, compare it to Rand in the beginning. The reader knew quite early on that he was the Dragon Reborn, but it did take some time before it was 'official'.

And then, just because we know which team Taim plays for, there is still a great deal of unknown factors. Does he have an agenda of his own, other than helping the shadow to win? Given the glimpses we have seen of his personality, I would say we have good reason to believe that is the case, and giving him a POV might have forced RJ to reveal hints of what that might be. Also, is Taim, as some of us believe, a 3rd Age Chosen, rather than "just" a high ranking dreadlord? That would be even more difficult to hide if he had been given a POV.

Good points, and I'm sure they contributed with RJ's not having written anything in Taim's PoV. I hate the guy, and it appalls me that my youngest son thinks he's the coolest character in the series. *sigh*

I totally agree with Majsju, there is know way to have POV’s from certain characters at certain times without giving too much away or even confusing the reader.

Take for example Moraine and Lan in EotW, had RJ given them POV’s early in the book he would have had too leave so much so as not too confuse the reader, ie warder, channeling ect., it would have made character development difficult if not impossible, and may have even cause contradictions.

Ok, I think I understand now.

Logain not having a POV in Gathering Storm (or any of the the remaining books) is a possibility; we do not know right now.
