I've been wondering about that for quite some time now, do we know who did it? If I was forced to make a guess I would go for Melaine.

It obviously wasn't Aiel who attacked her.

Demira is the Aes Sedai in LoC, right?  I always assumed it was Taim, since real Aiel weren't responsible.

Man I have been sloppy reading the details then, I always figured it was aiel :P.

If you read the descriptions of the attackers, it seems most likely to me that they are some of Fain's corrupted Whitecloaks.
