Oscars 2010 Discussion

It is a bit early but we are closing in on the end of the year.  Here are the movies that are currently buzzing for Oscar nods.  Keep in mind this year that there will be 10 nominations for best picture instead of the usual 5.

Best Picture:

All Good Things

Amelia

Away We Go

An Education

Chéri

Creation

A Serious Man

Broken Embraces

Up In The Air

The Informant!

The Men Who Stare at Goats

The White Ribbon

Avatar

Brothers

Pirate Radio

The Hurt Locker

Invictus

The Lovely Bones

Nine

Precious

Up

Where the Wild Things Are

Inglourious Basterds

"Men who stare at goats"  had a few funny parts but overall i thought it sucked  :-\  not one of McGregors or Clooneys best films by far.

though the jedi referrance and Ewan being the new age Obi in Star Wars was very humorous as an inside joke ;)

Hmm, my pick for the award is Precious...but some of the ones I think will get the nom:

Precious

No 'The Blind Side?'

Well I will have a better idea in the next few weeks once these movies are all out.  I have only seen one or two of them.  I have little desire to see Avatar but may have to suck it up if Oscar buzz surrounds it.

I've seen 1 of the movies on this list ... so far.

Avatar looks like a real life/CGI combo type movie from what i've seen.

I want to see it just for the effects. The cinematography looks amazing.

Agreed.  I'm looking forward to it - the story sounds interesting as well.

As for the list, I've never even heard of most of them.  :-\

The Hurt Locker! That was the name! Was trying to remember the name for the past several weeks and couldn't think of it at all.

i think the game for "Avatar" will actually end up being better than the movie; considering the concept of the movie.

and what?!?!?!  no GI Joe or Tansformers 2 or Star Trek or Taken or Wolverine

dude seriously, thoughs were like the best movies this year

If any of these movies make the list, then the movie industry is doomed. Those were good movies, entertaining movies, but not representative of the art.

Transformers 2 was completely trash. I didn't watch GI Joe, Wolverine, or Taken.

Loved Star Trek, but its not best picture material.

Star Trek is the ONLY one I can see making the list... and only because it was expanded to 10 nominees and it would represent the 'popular' nominee... meaning the nominee representing the ignorant masses.... and when I say ignorant I am not saying it was a bad movie... just that most movie goers flock to popcorn flicks and not the arthouse or quality flicks.

I JUST got done with watching GI Joe.  SUCKED!  I mean... bad.  The Baroness was never good.  She and Hawk never had a thing.  The acting was terrible.  The fight sequences were fake... I expected more from Ray Park.  The dialogue was TERRIBLE.  Every cliche phrase was uttered.  The plot was bad.

Taken was a great movie.  It is not oscar worthy.

This brings up another good discussion.... how many Oscar winners have you actually seen?  I went through and just did this the other day.  49 out of 81... which includes all the winners since 1969. What is your count?

Got about 40 of them, saw most of the ones from 80-present, some from the 20s/30s/40s, almost none from the 50-70s.

However I have seen alot of the movies from the 20s-50s that were nominated...

AMC/TMC = awesome late nights. ;)

i've seen 16 on the list.  only 1 of the older movies and the rest were from the 70's and up.  "Shakespear in Love" being my fav  :)

well seeing as "Men Who Stare at Goats" made the list ....  i'd much rather see taken in its place.

personally i'm a big fan of CGI; and the movies i listed about excluding Taken were awesome in that category, with Star Trek taking the Number 1 spot.  and only because in Transformers there was TOO much detail.

taken on the other hand i thought was an awesome story; especailly since it's based off of whats actually happening now a days with kidnappings and the sex slave trade.  there hasn't been a good movie like this since "Man on Fire"

The obscure International Press Academy is known within awards circles for releasing its nominations before actually seeing all of the big awards contenders, so it’s not always wise to put a lot of stock in its lists.

Motion Picture, Drama

The Hurt Locker

Bright Star

An Education

The Messenger

Precious

The Stoning of Soraya M.

Motion Picture, Comedy/Musical

Julie & Julia

The Informant!

A Serious Man

It’s Complicated

Up in the Air

Nine

I just saw "The Road" with Viggo Mortenson. I don't think the picture was a Best Picture film but Mortenson does another great job acting and I think he should be considered for a Best Actor nomination. I think his performance was almost on par with his one two years ago as a Russian mobster in "Eastern Promises" (great movie if you haven't checked it out btw).

I've seen 52 of the Best Picture winners. I spent a couple years working at a video store in college and made myself watch as many of them as I could. Not sure why I stopped.

For the last ten years I've also made it a point to watch all of the Best Picture nominees before Oscar night. Now that they bumped that up to ten, it's going to be a hella lot harder.

Are they going to split them up like they do the globes? Best Picture/Drama and Best Picture/Comedy or Musical?? Or just pile all ten up in the one Best Picture category.  :-\

Personally, I think it was stupid to flood the category like that. They could have bumped it to seven and that would have been a bit better. Ten is way too many. And if crap like GI Joe or Transformers (and I was a HUGE Transformers geek growing up) make the cut, I will officially swear off ever watching the Oscars again.

Ok, not really. But I will have a very angry expression on my face when they mention it as a nominee.

Easter Promises was such a great movie...although I could have done without seeing Mortenson's junk

Man though, that's how he proves how hardcore of an actor he was, having a naked knife fight in a sauna with 2 other guys and winning!!
