extended childbearing is probably because humans are soft and weak I mean we can take in excess of a year just to walk a few steps, many other animals can do that nearly as soon as the are out of the womb or at the most in a few weeks (I'm thinking birds leaving the nest on that one, any other creature has at least basic movement straight after birth, I mean kangaroo babies travel all the way up into the mothers pouch)
