When you have to go and it's time to say goodbye, I have to bite my tongue

I told you I didn't want to do anything to put pressure on you

I don't want you to think that I'm asking for anything right now

But instead of this whole thing fading with time, it's gotten stronger

And in some ways I'm growing a lot

I have developed a surprising amount of patience

My friend just got engaged today, or maybe last night, but I think today, and instead of the jealousy I half-expected, I'm just plain ecstatic for her

Even though both of us always expected our places would be reversed

Knowing that it could be years before I get anything back from you doesn't make me as itchy inside as it might once have done

Or maybe that's just because it's you

Because you're pretty much the single most amazing person I've ever known

And I am so so so grateful that you're my friend

That the Lord blessed ME, that I can be your best friend, and you mine

And maybe it's not hard for me to wait because I know you're worth it

Because as much as I cared for those other guys I dated

As much as they cared for me and tried to lift me up

None of them ever brought out the best in me the way you do

The way you have ever since we became friends, all that time ago

And I can't truly be unhappy when you're around

No one in my life has ever had the same effect on me

So I'll wait for you to be ready
