BUT NOW!!!

The Persian's conquests were added to the empire as small kingdoms called satrapies, ruled by satraps (kings in their own right) whilst the King of Kings of Persia had no fixed abode and travelled from palace to palace in the capitals of the satrapies.

The satrap system was based on a hierarchy or pecking order controlled by the king. Hence, --> a great deal of in-fighting and jostling for position, as all power and privilege came from the king.

a.k.a, Daes'de'amar

The main attempt attempt at uniting this huge empire was the Royal Road running from Sardis the cap. of Lydia in Asia Minor, to Sousa the Persian capital itself.

This most excellent road helped troop movements as well as trade.

But apart from this there was very little attempt by Persian kings to form a unified empire out of these very different races. As long as the conquered peoples stayed quiet and obediently paid their tribute, they were largely left alone to their own local practices.

This loose organisation was to Alexander's advantage when he embarked on his invasion because:

- there was no loyalty to the Great King of Persia, therefore no unified opposition

- each satrap was quite isolated from teh others

- as a result ~ Alexander could "pick off" each satrapy at a time

- in fact, many of these places welcomed him as a liberator

- the territory was so huge (and out of contact) that it took Darius II months, if not years, to gather an army together

'Course, these factors which at first worked in Alexander's favourite when conquering also worked against him afterwards...

The sheer size of teh empire, lack of unity&trade, lack of common language and culture, provided his major problems.

Come on Egypt!

how are they doing?

Match hasn't started against Brazil yet, chanting the national anthems.

Stages of treatment:

Primary: public education about diseases (prior to infection)

Secondary: treating the actual infection that has already occurred

Tertiary: recovery from illness

Yarr. And then proceeded to kill most of them, including almost himself, by marching through a desert for punishment :P
