We have 2 switches like that at the bottom of the stairs. The one nearest upstairs was for teh downstairs light, and teh one furthest from teh stairs was for upstairs. A couple of years ago we redecorated and switched them round... *shakes head*

 

there's something like this for the lights in my bedroom.

 

I now have a mental catalog of what each switch outside each bathroom does
