Thyroxin is produced by the thyroid gland. Thyroxin increases the basal metabolic rate, the heart rate and the breathing rate.

Thyroxin is also essential for the growth and functioning of the heart and nervous system as well as the growth and development of important organs

Hypothyroidism (too little thyroxin) causes slow skeletal and mental development in children, in adults it causes slow thought and movement, thickening skin and weight gain

Hyperthyroidism can cause increased metabolic rate, weight loss, hyperactivity, nervous tension, protruding eyes, increased heart rate and gigantism

An increase in adrenalin will increase heart rate, blood pressure, rate of respiration and the rate of conversion of glycogen to glucose (uses thyroxin and glucagon in these functions)

Muscle tone is increased, pupil's dilate and sweat production increases
