I like the Blondie cover, but I prefer the original by John Holt and the Paragons.

Song 52: Phantom of the Opera

Song 52 sees us head in a slightly different direction, with a song being picked from the world of musicals. It is a very popular song to be covered, and I am picking a metal cover to challenge the original composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

ORIGINAL: Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford

The song is performed in Act One after the song Angel of Music (The Mirror) and before The Music of the Night from Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical Phantom of the Opera. It is sung by Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, and takes place as the Phantom escorts Christine by boat to his lair beneath the Opera Garnier.

COVER: Tarja Turunen and Marco Hietala (of Nightwish)

As I have already said, Phantom of the Opera is quite popular when it comes to covers, especially in the world of metal. I try not to pick the same groups/artists repeatedly, but I have done so here. Coevered in 2002, it features Tarja Turunen and Marco Hietala as Christine and the Phantom respectively. There is a slight difference in the register the song is sung in, depending on whether you listen to the recorded (different) or live version (same).

Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford

I like both versions but even with my metal loving, I would pay to see those two perform phantom of the opera.

whoa!  Corki didn't vote for nightwish!

No...because the original is much better...plus nothing beats the musical!

Anyway, that is a 6-0 win (I think as I am taking Deviations' vote for the Original).

Next song is on the way!

Song 53: Mr. Brightside

One of the bigger groups of the 2000s are up next, as they take on a jazz/swing cover of their 2003/04 single, Mr. Brightside.

ORIGINAL: The Killers

This song came from the Las Vegas group's debut album and was named 'Song of the Decade' by UK radio stations Absolute Radio and XFM. It had good chart success across the world, including number 10 in the UK and US Billboard, and several number 1s.

COVER: Paul Anka

Paul Anka is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor. In 1983, he co-wrote with Michael Jackson the song I Never Heard, which was retitled and released in 2009 under the name This Is It. Anka covered the song in a swing/jazz style in 2007 for his 2007 covers album Classic Songs, My Way.

If anyone wants to run this thread from Monday 1st February 2010, please PM me. I ask as I am beginning to run out of ideas for covers! I know there are loads out there, but I think a few fresh participants would be much appreciated! Remember, it counts as an activity when it comes to ORG points via the roll call.

Well, I have to say the cover was interesting and I liked it well enough, but for the song itself I have to go with the original, The Killers.

(and if I'd made it just an hour or so sooner, I would've had time to cast my vote for Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford :D)

Did you do the idea I sent u a pm on a while ago - aint been around for a while so no idea if u did and cba to read through all those pages!

I will do it then - Am allowed to put more than 1 cover as the idea I had as two good and different covers.
