Someone over at the Penny Arcade forums mentioned this scene from John Ringo's "Princess of Wands" where the villain reveals why he became evil:

"Demons can give earthly power..." Krake said, then smiled thinly. "Even over book sales."

"It's that damned Robert Nile, isn't it?" Duncan said, amazed. "You did all this just to...what? Get better sales? Corner the fantasy market?"

"I've been in this business for thirty years!" Krake shouted, his mouth practically frothing. "And the man writes tripe! What's the justice in that? I've worked so hard. And he comes out of nowhere and sells a gazillion copies of complete crap! What's wrong with my books? What's wrong with people these days that they want unending series that never go anywhere? Nineteen pages on a harvest? Two hundred pages of every single step of every single character detailed? Are people insane?"

Is there any list of such things?

If not, let the compiling begin!

If you know any instances of the books being mentioned or seen onscreen in any television shows, movies or songs, share them.

I see mostly references to Christianity and the Legends of King Arthur, both of which RJ based the story on. Not much more than that.

Er, well, whenever someone is lagging out in Starcraft II, just before they drop, I type "I have won again, Lews Therin."

Does that count? :myrddraal:

hahaha

sometimes when I win a game, or make a good rhetorical jab, I have the strong urge to say "I win again Lews Therin."

Another middle earth reference the fall of Aridhol = the fall of numenor. Aes Sedai reminds me of the Bene Gesserit of Dune

Earlier this morning I was watching a programme about the UK Air Ambulance service, that uses helicopters to reach places road vehicles can't easily get to. It's set in Yorkshire, and the opening titles show the presenter stranding on a rocky hill, next to a concrete pillar. I took one look, and thought 'that's a Portal Stone'. (Boringly it's probably an Ordnance Survey marker!)

Could anyone post more concrete "evidence" of a quest hub in WoW that references WoT? would be really interested in checking it out

Anyone ever see those Keystone Light commercials with "Keith Stone" (or as I call him, the most interesting redneck in the world)?

I saw a clip online of one where it begins with him sitting in a chair, reading a book out loud, and he says something about Aes Sedai.

Anyone think the story Birgitte tells of her raid on the Tower of Ghenjei is similar to the tale of Hansel and Gretel?

Hansel and Gretel are the 2 characters, reflected by Birgitte and Gaidal Cain.

Birgitte leaves a trail of iron behind her to use to return to the real world.

Hansel and Gretel use a trail of stones and breadcrumbs.

Hansel and Gretel are to be eaten by the witch is reflected by the Aelfinn and Eelfinn who feed on human emotion.

The witch is cooked in her own over, and the Aelfinn and Eelfinn are afraid of fire.

I cannot bring it fully to memory but there is on the forums here somewhere a link to a beer add where the guy is reading out loud and iirc he is reading from Towers of Midnight.

I found a link to it on youtube:

In WoW there's a dragon NPC named Baleflame. There are likely more in the game, but that one stands out to me as I see it frequently when Grim Batol comes up in LFD.

Anyone listen to Mumford and Sons? At least half their songs sound like they're about the Wheel of Time.

Little Lion Man... Gawyn anyone?

Weep for yourself, my man,

You'll never be what is in your heart

Weep little lion man,

You're not as brave as you were at the start

Rate yourself and rake yourself,

Take all the courage you have left

Waste it on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

But it was not your fault but mine

And it was your heart on the line

I really fucked it up this time

Didn't I, my dear?

Tremble for yourself, my man,

You know that you have seen this all before

Tremble little lion man,

You'll never settle any of your scores

Your grace is wasted in your face,

Your boldness stands alone among the wreck

Learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

But it was not your fault but mine

And it was your heart on the line

I really fucked it up this time

Didn't I, my dear?

....

After the Storm.... Rand/tGS?

And after the storm,

I run and run as the rains come

And I look up, I look up,

on my knees and out of luck,

I look up.

Night has always pushed up day

You must know life to see decay

But I won't rot, I won't rot

Not this mind and not this heart,

I won't rot.

And I took you by the hand

And we stood tall,

And remembered our own land,

What we lived for.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.

And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.

Get over your hill and see what you find there,

With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

And now I cling to what I knew

I saw exactly what was true

But oh no more.

That's why I hold,

That's why I hold with all I have.

That's why I hold.

I will die alone and be left there.

Well I guess I'll just go home,

Oh God knows where.

Because death is just so full and mine so small.

Well I'm scared of what's behind and what's before.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.

And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.

Get over your hill and see what you find there,

With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.

And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.

There is a track called Aes Sedai by Andrew Gilpin

In GRRM:s books

One lord is called Gawyn, cant remember where, think its the third book

The onion knight refers to Dragonstone as "Dragonmount"

Arya meets a harp-player called Tom

The fool in ASoIaF A Clash of Kings mistakenly names Jaime Lannister the Kinslayer while performing for Stannis on Dragonstone.

How about the many times that men have come back as women in many T.V series, like Supernatural to name one of them.

Majesty the video game had the ratmen use balefire from their catapults, I would assume it was a wheel of time reference

I don't think that is really attributable to RJ, also when has that happened on Supernatural? Are you just referring to angel vessel issues?

I hardly think that's a reference to WoT.  WoT was not the first story to introduce the idea of gender swapping, lol.

So is naming your band something like Myrddraal or Aes Sedai not copyright infringement?

Because if not, I would LOVE to call my project Karaethon

  • 3 years later...

Vildjharta has a song called "Eternal Golden Monk" that seems to be like the forsaken (or perhaps even Lews Therin?) toying and mocking Rand. The connection (for me at least) came at the end where it says

"I know your wounds still burn.

And I know you will leave when the winds turn.

When the winds turn, it brings dissonance into the sky.

Drift like clouds, and flow like water.

Rage like a fire to turn all things black.

Become one with the void."

I also remember a T.V show that had 13 of the books on a bookshelf in a scene. Cannot remember the shows name, though.

Can someone give examples of the wot references in dragon age? I played the first dragon age, but it was before I read eye of the world so obviously those references slipped by me. But like three people said there were a bunch of them so I'm really interested now to hear what they were.
