I'd like to introduce you to Bob

Thread inspired by Cindy.

So It seems like most folks here are metalheads with a few electronicas thrown in. For the most part though it seems like you all know what good music is when it's composed well, regardless of genre. So since cindy and I talk about Bobby D often enough I figured the two of us can introduce some of you to his lesser known greatness. Everybody knows the songs that get radio play like Hurricane, Like a Rolling Stone, Mr. Tamborine Man and Times They Are A-Changing, but there is so much more depth to his catalog that you may appreciate.

This is the best break-up song EVER and it got me through the most miserable time in my life:

I'll leave it up to Cindy to drop the next bit of Bob knowledge on ya.

Idiot Wind

Someone’s got it in for me, they’re planting stories in the press

Whoever it is I wish they’d cut it out but when they will I can only guess

They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy

She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me

I can’t help it if I’m lucky

People see me all the time and they just can’t remember how to act

Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts

Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at

I couldn’t believe after all these years, you didn’t know me better than that

Sweet lady

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth

Blowing down the backroads headin’ south

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth

You’re an idiot, babe

It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike

I haven’t known peace and quiet for so long I can’t remember what it’s like

There’s a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin’ out of a boxcar door

You didn’t know it, you didn’t think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars

After losin’ every battle

I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin’ ’bout the way things sometimes are

Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin’ me see stars

You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies

One day you’ll be in the ditch, flies buzzin’ around your eyes

Blood on your saddle

Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb

Blowing through the curtains in your room

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth

You’re an idiot, babe

It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart

You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn’t enough to change my heart

Now everything’s a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped

What’s good is bad, what’s bad is good, you’ll find out when you reach the top

You’re on the bottom

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind

I can’t remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes

don’t look into mine

The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the

building burned

I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the

springtime turned

Slowly into Autumn

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull

From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth

You’re an idiot, babe

It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I can’t feel you anymore, I can’t even touch the books you’ve read

Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin’ I was somebody else instead

Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy

I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory

And all your ragin’ glory

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I’m finally free

I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me

You’ll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above

And I’ll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love

And it makes me feel so sorry

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats

Blowing through the letters that we wrote

Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves

We’re idiots, babe

It’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves

i tried to get you trying to get to heaven off of time out of mind, which is uplifting and lovely, but bob's record label is greedy and wicked and has pulled most of the videos from youtube.

which leaves me with not dark yet, which is a gorgeous song, but... not so uplifting. more... like me... i include the lyrics so that you will understand that he is not singing of his sensitive manitee, though that would have been a nice touch.

Not Dark Yet

Shadows are falling and I’ve been here all day

It’s too hot to sleep, time is running away

Feel like my soul has turned into steel

I’ve still got the scars that the sun didn’t heal

There’s not even room enough to be anywhere

It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there

Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain

Behind every beautiful thing there’s been some kind of pain

She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind

She put down in writing what was in her mind

I just don’t see why I should even care

It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there

Well, I’ve been to London and I’ve been to gay Paree

I’ve followed the river and I got to the sea

I’ve been down on the bottom of a world full of lies

I ain’t looking for nothing in anyone’s eyes

Sometimes my burden seems more than I can bear

It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there

I was born here and I’ll die here against my will

I know it looks like I’m moving, but I’m standing still

Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb

I can’t even remember what it was I came here to get away from

Don’t even hear a murmur of a prayer

It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there

ah, another gem form time out of mind, and i'll stop here, because... well, just go get the album, please. for me.

this song is long. it's in two parts. long parts.

it was supposed to be longer, but the label made him cut it. just... just... criminal.

If he is introduced, I think that I could start a thread to introduce Power Metal...

You'll see it soon.

And Ley, I don't think the point of this thread was to try and compete with other genres of music.

Unfortunately Cindy I myself probably favor metal over Bobby D

Sorry.

nothing to be sorry about

sorry the videos don't play for you, tho. when you come to bob, as we all do in time, you will seek him out and find him in your own time. or, you could just search mp3s or something. but you should wait until you're called so you can savor the experience more fully.

I've heard some of his stuff and somewhat enjoyed it, folk music is just one of the few types of music that I'm not crazy about. Good music is good music tho, and I can always appreciate it.

he hasn't done folk music since 67ish. people were quite annoyed with him. called him judas for playing electric guitar.

if you ever do find yourself bob-curious, look for stuff he's done since around 97, when he got real good again. not that he was ever anything but pure perfection. but damn, he's heartbreakingly good now.

and then try some johnny cash. also recent. old is very good, but in the last few years before he died, that man sang like an angel, bless his soul.

yeah, there's more there every time i listen. i am truly sad for people that don't get him, because they are missing so much.

i can only hope they will find him some day, and have that joy.

oh, my dear bob, how could i forget the single most WOT related song of all - Shelter from the Storm.

a wonderful song in its own right.

i porvide the studio version, sans video, and a live version, which rocks.

i love this song, and from the chapter titles, so did RJ
